Plans for the release of an album in early 2009 are currently being laid in place but in the meantime Ciaran is hitting the road for over 2 weeks in November and December to test the new material in the hope of building an audience for the album upon its release. Ciaran plays a blend of lo-fi experimental acoustic folk in the vein of Devendra Banhart or Wilco. www.myspace.com/michaeljohnobrien www.myspace.com/coneillmusic www.coneill.net 5th The Brothers Movement & guests Skinsize Kings + Disconnect 4 The Brothers Movement only came into existence in 2007. It's a measure of how highly regarded The Brothers Movement have become within music circles in such a short period of time that they were invited to open for The Jesus And Mary Chain in The Roundhouse, London in March 08. Further evidence of the potential of this band came when Black Rebel Motorcycle Club invited The Brothers Movement to open for their entire European tour in June 08. Over the last couple of years these hard working rock n' rollers have built up an impressive roll call of opening slots with some of the finest bands on the planet with the likes of Primal Scream, Ian Brown, MC5, Chemical Brothers, Sonic Youth and Brian Jonestown Massacre among the bands with whom they have shared a stage. Skinsize Kings formed in early 2006 intent to invent (to vent their dissent) impressively expressive, aggressively progressive sounds with no bounds that surround and astound and pursue avenues that enthuse and infuse a sense the nonsense imposed is opposed in notation and narration at least. Since said formation in the centre of the nation this 6 man faction have been in action without any fears and without any peers,.. just a goal and shedloads of soul and rhymes over odd times that stop/start, borderline art and never relent or circumvent on said intent. Disconnect 4 - Leon Butler (guitar/synth/vocals), Yvonne Ryan (bass), Keith McCaffery (drums), and Eoin Reilly (guitar) have been together for little more than a year, yet they are among the best known bands in Galway city - they also provoke the strongest, sometimes most polarised, reactions from audiences. Disconnect 4's strong visual image, sense of swagger, and confidence can make people go: "Who the hell do this lot think they are!?!" Yet, by the end of the band's set, that same audience is won over by the band's sharp, energetic, new wave songs. "People can be polarised by us and say we're all about image and not about music, but we change a lot of people's opinions when they see us," says Keith, who you sense thrives on that kind of reaction. "It makes us work harder to win them over. It's better to provoke a reaction and make people have an opinion. It's better to p*** people off than have them say 'You're harmless'." Disconnect 4 make no apologies for their visual image and projection of a recognisable look, but take exception to any accusation that it comes before the music. "We don't want to look like anyone else," says Keith. "All the bands that made an impact - The Beatles, Blondie, Ramones - all had a style and a particular image. It's always a good thing in rock'n'roll. It's different if you are a singer, but when there are four of you in a band, it's four people going for the same thing. You have to have a unified image to show you are going for something together musically. People who deny that are only lying to themselves." It is above all the music that counts and the proof is that Disconnect 4 do win people over with their songs. The songs on the band's Myspace page - 'Running With Scissors' and 'Say what You Said' - define their sound; echoing guitars; metronymic, danceable beats; synth noise, and driving bass riffs. It's infectious and hints that Joy Division, early U2, and 17 Seconds-era Cure are strong influences. "It all points towards dance," says Eoin. "We want to make music that gets people fired up and dancing." "Indie music is going that way," says Leon. "People like music they can listen to but can move to at the same time, that's why more DJs are playing bands like Hot Chip." "We make music by jamming," says Yvonne. "We work from that and make sure everything works as a song and not just toddle along. We always work on the structure to make the whole thing work. We don't come in with preconceived ideas, we want to see where it can take us." "Next year we'll be moving towards 1930s folk," quips Keith. Yvonne's bass riffs keep the music tight and structured but she has little time for any stereotyped notions of why women are often the bass players in bands. "You can read all this scientific crap about how women prefer lower frequencies and they are more pre-disposed to such sounds, but that's not it for me," she says. "When I was 15 me and a friend of mine wanted to form a band. She had a guitar so I bought a bass and I found that I just liked it. I play the piano as well but it's the bass I really fell into." Disconnect 4 have a great sense of humour and couldn't be accused of taking themselves too seriously. If you're on Myspace and have sent the band a Friend request you may get back the strange comment - One-zy Pre Bop n' nail! - what does that mean? "We've invented our own language," laughs Eoin. "It's because we've spent so much time together we keep coming up with these words. One beer can be an One-zy but so can 24 cans. It's escalated to the point where the entire English language is just one word!" www.myspace.com/thebrothersmovement www.myspace.com/disconnect4 6th CATHY DAVEY & guests The Raglans ++ Cathy Davey is the daughter of a musician father and a sculptor mother whose childhood was spilt between England and Ireland. Her schooldays were equally as mixed an affair, with Cathy's individualistic instincts tending towards rejection of organised education. This invariably led to friction followed quickly by suspension and inevitably to expulsion. Her schooling did lead though to the nurturing of her artistic talents and Art College beckoned before the lure of music would brook no competition. Cathy took to writing songs easily, but with the smallest record collection ever, she had little to reference her work to, so she kept it to herself. Her first gig, at an 'open-mic' affair, brought a manager and the bedroom-demos led to a contract with Parlophone main-man, Miles Leonard. A beautiful, sunny summer spent in Wales with Ben Hillier resulted in 'Something Ilk' the critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful debut album. Supported by 18 months of touring – torture for her as she suddenly realised she was a very long way from her bedroom and singing to strangers wasn't at all fun –the album didn't reach a wider audience without Radio support. Almost three years on and Cathy Davey was ready to release 'Tales Of Silversleeve' her second album on Parlophone. This time though the album was recorded in much the same manner as it was written; in various houses in Ireland and London. A methodology ensuring Cathy could develop her songs to their specific requirements rather than the costly meter's-running, approach of the big studio. Her co-producer, Ex-Sneaker Pimp, Liam Howe, helped Cathy to continue her experimental approach to recording but ensured that the songs retained their immediacy - probably the single biggest difference between the two albums. These new songs, 'Rueben', 'Sing for Your Supper', and 'Moving', etc. didn't take a second listen before they snared you good and proper. The album has gone multi platinum in Ireland and propelled Cathy to the forefront of the Irish Music Scene – and she's not looked back since. The future is a brighter place… The Raglans consist of Stephen, Luke and David and they started playing together when they were fifteen. The first live performance was at a school talent show when Stephen and Luke began to show signs that their performance abilities were a cut above the rest. Under the guidance of K2 Music Stephen and Luke cut 3 original tracks in Antimo Puca studio in September 07 under the name 'The Raglans'. The name 'The Raglans' was inspired by the Patrick Kavanagh poem 'On Raglan Road' a favourite of both Luke and Stephen.David joined the band full time in January 08 bringing a rounded sound to the group. With the line-up now complete the band decided to take a year out and concentrate fully on song writing, arrangements, recording, rehearsal and performance. They reached an agreement with K2 Music to produce and release four three track EP's of original songs in preparation for recording a full album in January 2009. The music of 'The Raglans' is acoustic based with a range of influences from Rhythm & Blues to Indie Pop Rock resulting in strong original melodic and lyrical content. www.myspace.com/cathydavey www.theraglans.com 11th WALLIS BIRD (SOLO ACOUSTIC) & guest Peter Doran + Bird is often compared to famous singer-songwriters like Ani DiFranco, Fiona Apple or the young Janis Joplin. In her songs she fuses elements of traditional folk music, blues and funk with an energetic handmade rock sound. Her exceptional voice allows for an already huge repertoire from soft folk ballads to rousing power songs. "Wallis' debut EP is a breath of fresh air, showcasing an exciting, spirited new talent" THE SUNDAY EXPRESS "Quirky, angsty, semi-acoustic folk-grunge-rock. file next to Ani Di Franco." THE GUARDIAN Counting to Wallis Bird, the numerical guide to the Irish singer-songwriter with the loud guitar and belting-pure voice: One: The number of times you'll have to hear Wallis Bird's first single 'Blossoms in the Street', before it sinks into your ears and stick in your head… Two: The number of minutes it took Island Records to realise they had found an act of international stature and long term success. Wallis Bird signed to Island Records UK in September 2006. Three: The number of musicians in Wallis' band, German Brothers virtuoso Michael and Christian Vinne (bass and drums), lovely Aoife O'Sullivan (viola and backing vocals). Four: The amount of days Wallis' first Digital Album Release "Spoons" needed to get in the top 10 UK digital album download charts. Five: Despite Tabloid Controversy, this is the amount of fingers Wallis has on each hand. Peter Doran began playing guitar at the tender age of eleven, experimenting initially with the electric guitar before progressing onto the acoustic guitar that he favours for songwriting. Throughout the most recent years he has been blessed by the talents of the musicians that make up his live band and feature heavily on recordings. The band and these musicians are an integral part of the music. The band and resulting variations of instruments allow the songs to be brought to vastly different places than possible using just an acoustic guitar and voice. This is duly exploited to the last in Peter's music. Some tracks are laid back, quiet affairs, whilst others lean towards the heavier end of the musical spectrum, employing dirty electric guitars, soaring string sections and blistering electric guitar solos. The main focus with the writing has always been on creating strong songs, both lyrically and harmonically, that will work when stripped down to bare bones and delivered on an acoustic guitar. The next stage is to bring these songs to the band where they all work together to take them to a more-realised place both dynamically and melodically. Last year saw the release of the debut album "Wood" which received positive reviews across the board, including praise from the much respected Irish publication "Hotpress" - "WARM AND ENCHANTING... AN ADMIRABLE DEBUT THAT SHOULD OPEN DOORS AND MINDS... 7/10" There was two versions released of this album... a standard jewel case version and a very special 2cd edition housed in a completely unique hand-carved indian walnut box! These boxes were hand-crafted in Kashmir, India. The second disc contained 11 tracks, many of which instrumentals, another side to Peter's writing that separates him from the standard singer/songwriter fare. Peter and the band have been playing live sets all over Ireland for the last few years, steadily building up a network of fans throughout Ireland. These have been a mixture of headline shows and high profile support slots, including opening for artists including Duke Special, Mark Geary, David Kitt, Colm Lynch, John Spillane, Luka Bloom, Gary Dunne, AM O'Grady, Albert Niland, Peter Mulvey, Emmett Tinley and even rock bands like Berkley. This fact is testament to the variety of material existing in Peter's repertoire. Currently there is enough material written to record a very strong follow up album... watch this space... Taking their musical cues from their early encounters with the classic songwriting of the Beatles, Steely Dan and Randy Newman. DIRECTOR cite Beck, Grandaddy, Muse and the Strokes as some of their modern day influences. DIRECTOR's music is pop simplicity at its best; boisterous energy mixed with melodic sensibility. "Music is meant to excite people; it's there for people to enjoy. That's what we try to focus on". Director's self-produced debut album, We Thrive on Big Cities included their debut singles, "Reconnect" and "Come With A Friend". They started in 1974, with all band members taking the surname Ramone. The original line-up included: vocalist Joey, guitarist Johnny, bassist Dee Dee and drummer Tommy. They performed in New York City nightclubs along with other legendary bands such as Blondie, The Talking Heads & Television and were among the first to get a record contract. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1976, is considered a classic of the punk genre and set the standard of simple pop songs delivered with raw energy. Although The Ramones never achieved mainstream financial success, they released 21 live and studio albums, had a devoted fan base and influenced countless bands, from The Clash and The Sex Pistols to Green Day and The Offspring. In 1978 drummer Tommy was replaced by Marky, who in 1983 was replaced by Richie but returned to the band in 1987. Bassist Dee Dee left the band in 1989 and was replaced by C.J. The band officially broke up in 1996. Joey died of cancer in 2001, Dee Dee died of a drug overdose in 2002 and Johnny died of cancer in 2004. Their albums include Rocket to Russia (1977), End of the Century (1980, produced by Phil Spector), Brain Drain (1989) and Adios, Amigos (1995). Some of their best-known songs are "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "The KKK Took My Baby Away." The Ramones were featured in Roger Corman's 1979 low-budget comedy Rock and Roll High School... End of the Century: The Story of The Ramones, a documentary about the band and its internal struggles, was released in 2003... The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002... The band's slogan, often chanted during concerts, was "Gabba Gabba Hey" and came from their song "Pinhead." PINHEAD are the only RAMONES tribute to be endorsed by Marky. PINHEAD has existed as a band for 5 years. Their primary aim was to try and recreate the RAW POWER of a truly great RAMONES gig. They as individuals believe the RAMONES were the greatest band from the 70's arguably one of the greatest rock bands of all time and still to this date totally underrated. They have strived to perfect the show they do by being as authentic as they can to the original Ramones. Their set is mainly taken from the first four Ramones albums as they believe this is the period that really defined the Ramones although they do dip into later albums as well. Included in the show are The Good the bad & The Ugly intro, A Pinhead to bring the Gabba Hay sign on stage & The Presidential seal clutching a bass ball bat as a back drop. Their belief in PINHEAD also comes from the total Ramones fanatics who have come to their gigs and come up after the show to tell us they were blown away and how they did not think it could be done. They have had support from some influential people like Cait O'riordan of the Pogues, her self a life long Ramones fan, who got up on stage to play a few numbers. Evil Elviss were an Athlone based punk rock band back in the early part of this decade also that have decided to play one last show before dispersing completely. They have in the past supported Pinhead and will do so one last time. http://www.geocities.com/pinheadireland/ 18th JUKEBOX GYPSY (UK) & guest anthony.love (UK) * Jukebox Gypsy formed while on a seven week tour of Ireland. Originally three songwriters Ben Blance, Dave Hastie and Isaac tabor met in Liverpool in 2007 and formed the folk group Blance, Hastie & Tabor. After performing notable gigs at the Liverpool Music Festival and the Bedford in London the band organised a Tour of Ireland. Johanna came along for the ride however it soon became obvious through busking on the streets of Galway and Wexford that she had a big part vocally to play in the band, and for the rest of the tour the band became known as Jukebox Gypsy. The band played at some great venues including hugely successful shows at the Ruby Sessions in Dublin, Laverys in Belfast, DeBarras in Clonakilty, The Sky and the Ground in Wexford as well as 3 gigs here at the Stables. Jukebox Gypsy also performed live on Feile Fm, East Coast Fm and had a prime time slot on Newstalk, a nationwide station. A follow up tour of Ireland is planned for christmas this year then a european summer tour will follow in 2009. 19 year old anthony.love hails from London and plays acoustic bass guitar and sing songs most of the time. The rest of the time he studies Russian at University College London. In the past year-and-a-half he has released 3 EPs and played just under 100 shows all over the country. He even played a gig in Russia once. He's done all of this by spending more time than is healthy on trains/coaches/the internet. "A champion of acoustic melodrama" Herts and Essex MUSIC-ZINE "all four songs are excellent....concentrate on the quality of the songs, here it's hard to fault – gentle without being drowsy, understated but not bleak, this is beautifully-created stuff. At turns its minimal yet touching and incredibly calming to listen to. An excellent start, I'd be very surprised if we don't hear more from Anthony Love in the near future" Nick Mann - A Short Fanzine About Rocking "Love's effortless but perfect alternative singer songwriter style blends many influences to create something new, which isn't all that common in the present day." Having started out playing acoustic sessions around his native city, he has slowly moved up the ranks by playing at bigger venues and attracting media exposure. A number of impressive EP's led to a management contract and a publishing deal before being ushered into a studio to record an album's worth of material. He actually did better than by recording the eleven tracks twice: once in their raw electric form, and once as stripped down numbers. The acoustic versions come on a bonus disc that offers the listener a welcome variation to the high-energy originals. Another welcome inclusion on this superb debut is three tracks that are old favourites for anyone familiar with Lynch's work. Many musicians could have opted to disregard the older tunes, but he has stuck by songs like Why Must I Apologize? and opening track Lucinda. The pacing of the album is full-blooded and played through a high tempo, a reminder of a young Weller. This is all fuelled by Lynch's vocal capabilities, where he manages to have the listener hanging on his every word. Whether he approaches a song with wild abandon (Two Bullets & A Gun) or tentatively gets his message across (Sophie), he is always using a certain vocal style that differs slightly throughout the album. There are backing vocals present, and guitars & percussion aiding his escapade, but it is the lead man's vocals that will ultimately win you over. Even when he sounds slightly like Nic Armstrongor John Power, there is enough originality in his tone to charm anyone daring enough to pick this record up. If more singer/songwriters like Lynch, and fellow Dublin native The Mighty Stef, keep coming up with exciting material then the day of the solo artist could very well return. The band and their management pride themselves on recreating the LP sound of Pearl Jam while mixing it with the live sound that fans are used to. Woodster are a four-piece rock band based out of Roscommon and are currently trying to establish themselves on the gigging circuit. The band was formed in October 2006 and has played many gigs in Dublin over the last year and a half as well in other areas of the country. It consists of Gearoid Connaughton on drums, Dermot Kelly on vocals and guitar, Pat Nolan on bass guitar and Micheal Sheil on lead guitar. Originally Woodster started out as a cover band but in recent months the band has focused on composing and writing its own music and lyrics. Woodster really impressed on a recent visit to the Stables with their superb rock sound. Intricate guitar riffs, monstrous rhythm and superb vocal delivery. www.myspace.com/australianpearljam www.myspace.com/woodsterband 26th TBC – see www.stableslive.com or www.myspace.com/stableslive for announcement nearer the time 27th THE AFTERMATH + guests Waiting to Explode with Marty Mulligan & Twenty Twelve + The Aftermath round off a very successful year indeed, which saw them release debut album "Friendlier Up Here' to critical and top 20 success in Ireland, with the release of download single There's a Darkness. The single version has been remastered by uber masterer John Davis (Kaiser Chiefs, The Ting Tings, Bloc Party, The Smiths.) at Metropolis studios, London. The release of 'There's a Darkness' see The Aftermath continue their never ending tour this year which has seen them perform to full houses from The Olympia Theatre, Dublin to The Marquee in Drimlish to The Irish Centre Leeds to Club Bang Bang in Berlin. Highlights of the remaining dates for the year include The Aftermath's first dates in Northern Ireland this year with The Pigeon Detectives, a Dublin show with legendary Irish band The Stunning and a special homecoming show in The Stables in Mullingar which will be recorded for a specially released EP early next year. With work already started on their sophomore album due to be recorded in late February and distribution deals inked in Scandinavia, Greece, Italy and the UK for Friendlier UP Here for an early 2009 release there won't be any let up in The Aftermath's work load for a while. With themes on their debut album Friendlier Up Here that bound from love through death, sex and call centres, bad Hollywood remakes and Delia Smith cookery books, Friendlier Up Here is an album borne of marathon Woody Allen movie sessions and daydreaming to a soundtrack of Bowie, Beatles, Roxy Music, The Smiths and Serge Gainsbourg. The lead single, Are You Not Wanting Me Yet? is a glam rock tale of unrequited love. Those familiar with The Aftermath's earlier releases will recognise the hit single 'One is Fun', a catchy Bowie-inspired disco song, which debuted at No 11 on the Irish charts on release. Other standout tracks include the Beatles-inspired 'Northern Lingerie', the desolate reality-check-to-self 'There Is A Darkness' and live favourite 'All I Want Is For You To Be Happy'. The self-penned and self-financed album was recorded in France with Karl and Dave Odlum of The Swell Season that won that Oscar earlier in the year and Gemma Hayes fame. Production duties were performed by Phil Vinyl, the man behind Placebo, Elastica and Pulp, mixing by Ger McDonald of Travis and U2 fame and words of wisdom came courtesy of legendary producer Mike Hedges and Irish Jack Lyons, an old associate of The Who's. The Waterboy's Steve Wickham joined the fray, as did Damien Rice cellist Vyvienne Long and Paul Weller keyboardist Helen Turner who continues to play live with the band. Marty Mulligan VS Waiting to Explode is a collaboration of slam poetry and the music of Waiting to Explode. It was sparked in Febuary 2007 after a Waiting to Explode gig in the Roisin Dubh in Galway where Slam Poet Marty Mulligan first joined the lads on stage. What started out as a little bit of fun ended up in an hour long jam, which sent the crowd wild! The project did not come to life until May of this year when Marty asked Waiting to Explode to be the house band in "The Word" which he is running at this years Electric Picnic. Since then, Marty and Waiting to Explode have been writing their mix of slam poetry and progressive rock which they performed to great praise at the recent Electric Picnic and will break out once more to join the Aftermath for this special Xmas show. Twenty Twelve have been creating quite a buzz since emerging from their rehearsal space a few months ago. Influenced by the likes of Explosions in the Sky, Redneck Manifesto they are a must see live act. www.myspace.com/theaftermathband www.myspace.com/waitingtoexplodemusic www.myspace.com/martymull www.myspace.com/youlneverfindus 28th THUNDERSTRUCK (AC/DC TRIBUTE) + The ultimate AC/DC Tribute band return to the Stables for another full blown take on the Classics of the DC. They have added a few dates around the country before and after the festival including this Thursday night at the Stables. Expect a thoroughly high octane night of rock and roll. THE TOM FUN ORCHESTRA bring their energetic stage show to Ireland and Scotland for a two-week tour. Two months after the Canadian release of their debut album, The Tom Fun Orchestra is turning a headlining spot at the Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots Festival into a two-week tour of Ireland and Scotland. In support of this tour, three songs from 'You Will Land With a Thud', produced by Gordon Gano (The Violent Femmes) and Warren Bruleigh (The Pixies, Louise Attaque), will be available as an EP through iTunes in Ireland and the UK on April 29. With recent high-profile showcases at Canadian Music Week and the East Coast Music Awards, live radio and national television performances, and an album that's been climbing charts across the country, the nine-piece "cluster rock" band from Cape Breton Island has been heralded as the next big thing to emerge from the burgeoning Canadian east coast music scene. Although hard to classify, Tom Fun's music has been described as "... a unique style of ...rock and roll music which incorporates every form of musical roots in an intoxicating blend". In addition to headlining performances at Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots Festival, The Tom Fun Orchestra will be supporting Frightened Rabbit for three shows in Scotland. Complete tour schedule is as follows: April 30 - Old Oak - Cork, Ireland May 1 - The Stables - Mullingar, Ireland May 2, 3, 4 - Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots Festival - Kilkenny, Ireland May 5 - The Boom Boom Room - Dublin, Ireland May 7 - Oran Mor - Glasgow, Scotland (with Frightened Rabbit) May 8 - The Waterfront - Dundee, Scotland (with Frightened Rabbit) May 9 - Dexter's - Arbroath, Scotland (with Frightened Rabbit) May 11 - The Bongo Club - Edinburgh, Scotland "You Will Land With A Thud" ALBUM PREVIEW AVAILABLE - http://myspace.com/tomfunorchestra Check out some killer TFO VIDEO footage here: http://tomfun.ca/tv/ www.tomfun.ca MEDIA QUOTES "Definitely one of the most interesting albums to come from the East Coast or anywhere else in Canada" - NOW Magazine "One of the most anticipated albums of 2008"- CBC Radio 3 "Cape Breton's Tom Fun Will Be Huge" - Times & Transcript "While the Dakota Tavern was hardly accommodating...it didn't stop Nova Scotia's latest gem from beating, stomping, and wailing into the small at-capacity venue...with front-man Johnny Turbo's growl-y Tom Waits impression leading the pack, made everyone a believer." – Exclaim! Magazine "...poised to become the East Coast's newest buzz band" - Daily Gleaner "Tom Fun put on the best live show on the East Coast" - [here] New Brunswick "I am amazed that they are not (yet) international sensations." - NovaNewsNow.com "Tom Fun's recent album is being heralded as one to hear...immediately" - Toronto Unplugged "This album is distinctly unique, and while it is hard to classify what makes it so charming the sheer outlandishness of all the content, combined with the underlying party atmosphere of all the tracks, makes this an album well worth a good listen. The unique vocals, with the over the top and catchy instrumentation gives this album an appeal that defies any real genres." -www.wgtsmagazine.com "This is something special about The Tom Fun Orchestra, the imagery that transcends throughout these songs is as magnificent as a good novel." - turnthepageblog.blogspot.com www.myspace.com/tomfunorchestra 2nd 'Wise Cracks Comedy Night' in aid of Irish Hospice Foundation The first "Wise Cracks Comedy Night" in aid of The Irish Hospice Foundation takes places in The Stables Mullingar on Friday the 2nd of May. This will be a night of excellent stand up comedy from some familiar faces and some of Irelands brightest new talents. Hosting the event is the accomplished Aidan Bishop. Native New Yorker Aidan began his comedy career in New York, regularly appearing at the New York Comedy Club and Stand Up New York. He is the organizer and resident mc of the now famous International Comedy Club in Dublin; he has played at Oxygen, Electric Picnic, and the Kilkenny Cat Laughs three years in a row. Damian Clark will also be performing on the night. Damian can be seen on RTE's "I Dare Ya!" carrying out hilarious pranks set by the Irish public. Damian has achieved great success in his native Australia having won numerous comedy awards and appeared on a variety of TV shows. Within a few months of moving to Dublin Damian, was voted 'The Number 1 event to see' & 'cream of the crop' (InDublin Magazine). Eric Lalor has opened for Des Bishop, Tommy Tiernan, Neil Delamere, Pj Gallagher amongst others. Eric has also performed at Electric Picnic, Kilkenny Cat Laughs, and the Galway Comedy Festival. Daniel Cahill takes to the stage at this charity event with his blend of straight to the mark punch lines and relaxed comic banter. Daniel has played to audiences in Dublin, Cork, and Galway and has supported Ed Byrne and Michael Mee. Daniel will also be appearing at this years Kilkenny Fringe Festival. The Wise Cracks Comedy Night is also proud to present Monaghan funny woman Niamh Marron. Niamh brings her unique high energy brand of comedy to The Stables. The brothers Cronin had just performed with their band to another lack lustre crowd of the usual London A & R bunch with none of them forthcoming with any shape of a deal. Things were not looking good for guitar based groups based in the northern UK town of Leeds where Johnny and Michael were brought to in the early 90's away from the dark recession hit Co Longford where they grew up as children. Friends Parva (who went on to become Kaiser Chiefs) had just been dropped along with many others and legendry venues (where the brothers had played with the likes of the Wedding Present, The Frank & Walters, The Fall, Mark Mullcahey, Gallon Drunk, Spacehog and Shed 7) such as the Duchess of York and The Town & Country club had just been shut down. With a few support gigs with The Frames and Damien Rice over the following months Johnny and Michael had a revelation. They decided to start anew, move back to Ireland and go about things the independent route the way said acts had done so very successfully. Upon returning to Ireland in Oct 2004 they set about putting plans together that were started on tour with The Frames. The following January the brothers set of to Black Box studios in the Loire region of France with David and Karl Odlum to start initial sessions of what would become The Aftermaths debut album (new start, new name after their favourite Rollin Stones record which punk poet John Cooper Clarke and former associated of The Who 'Irish" Jack Lyons agree is a top mod name and the Stones at their best). Recording continued at a slow pace for the rest of 2005 with money fairly tight with the relocation back to Ireland. It was around this time they met guitarist Justin McNabb and former Anathema bass player Duncan Patterson and the gigging machine that is The Aftermath started out on what would become a nearly never ending tour of the Irish musical landscape. They decided to not release anything just yet and try and build a fan base around the county as well as turn the live act into something special. In March of 2006 the band received an offer to support The Mission for 5 dates around Greece. Wayne Hussey had come across the bands myspace during their European tour and loved what he heard. The gigs went down a storm playing to over 20 thousand people on the short tour. The Aftermath continued to visit Greece once a year for short tours and plan to release their debut there in late September. It was around this time that Duncan Patterson became busier with his solo projects and they had to find a new bass player. Rather than audition someone new they reinstated Martin 'Sleepy' Gray who had been playing with them in the UK. Martin was not the only player they kept in touch with from their time in England. Helen Turner who was a member of The Style Council and played with Paul Weller until the Stanley Road album and had also been a part of the brothers live band in the UK reinstated herself at a few recording sessions and a few live gigs including the whole of The Aftermath's UK tour Nov 07. Another person they kept in touch with was Gallon Drunk man Terry Edwards. Terry famous for his arrangements for PJ Harvey, The Tindersticks, Nick cave and David Holmes to name a few was asked for a few string and brass arrangements to be done. You can hear his work on Hollywood Remake and Joyful Mystery on Friendlier Up Here. In July 2006 the band released debut single in Ireland "One Is Fun" named after a Deliah Smith cook book for singletons). It debuted at no11 in it's first week and kept in the top 40 for a further 3, ending up as one of the highest selling singles of 2006. With One Is Fun The Aftermath received their first national airplay from Larry Gogan on 2fm and Ann Marie Kelly at Today fm as well as getting on the play list for the online based then Phantom fm. The tour continued throughout July/ August with their first sold out shows in Crawdaddy Dublin, Roisin Dubh Galway and The Stables Mullingar and finished when the band were asked to open the HIFI festival that year sharing a stage with Razor light, The Streets, Ian Brown amongst others. The band continued to build momentum with the release of Hollywood remake in mid October 2006. The single went in at no 19 in the Irish charts beating both Madonna and My Chemical Romance to the highest new entry. It was during the tour for the single that the brothers had a chance meeting with Waterboy Steve Wickham who agreed to lay down some violin parts on the recordings which were developing when the finances were scraped together. Another thing that happened around this time was for the band to be name checked in BBC dram series Spooks. The plot involved some terror threat named The Aftermath which the characters googled but all the could find was an Irish based indie group. 2007 started well with The Aftermath named number 6 hope for 2007 in the Hot Press readers poll and One Is Fun number 38 in the 105 best singles of Phantom fm's end of year list. Touring continued with visit to the UK and Greece and dates around Ireland. When something does so many miles as the band do it was inevitable what happened next. On the way to the Phoenix Festival in Tullamore on Friday the 13th of July 2007 for the start of a tour to promote single "All I Want is for you to be happy" their van hit a patch of oil on the road, skidded and flipped several times until finishing upside down in a ditch. Luckily the band were all wearing seatbelts and still can't believe how no one was injured at all bar a few cuts and bruises. After a weeks rest the band hit the road again with promotional duties which seemed to pay of with the single debuting at no 10 that week and getting extensive play on 2fm and Phantom in Dublin. There were full houses all round on the tour which finished of with the brothers Cronin playing a home town show with Declan Nerney at The Marquee in Drumlish Festival in front of 2800 people. In November of 2007 the band hit the road in the UK for dates to promote "All I want is for you to be happy release on Littlest Mojo records. The single picked up quite a few plays on Xfm both in London and Manchester as well as on BBC 6. Back to Ireland in December for another jaunt around Ireland which started with playing to their biggest Dublin audience yet as support to The Blizzards in the Ambassador. The focus for the start of 2008 was to get the record finished. The Sessions that had continued with Karl were sounding great and included such musicians as Vyvienne Long of the Damien Rice band, Daragh O Toole on piano, Steve Wickham of The Waterboys as well as Helen Turner(Paul Weller). The band then employed the services of Ger McDonnell to mix the majority of the album. Ger who had previously worked with U2, The Manics, Travis and Martha Wainwright worked on 8 of the finished tracks with Marc Carrolan (Turn, The Thrills, Muse) mixing 2 and David Odlum taking care of the rest. The Aftermath also employed the services of legendary Masterer Greg Calbi who has been responsible for so many classic albums working with the likes of John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, The Strokes, The Frames, Interpol to name but a few. The debut album by The Aftermath called 'Friendlier Up Here' is released on Live Transmission Records on April 25th 2008. With endorsements from the likes of Jackie Hayden from Hot Press who said "touches of Talking Heads and Roxy Music with spacey drum sounds, strident string's, fuzzed up guitars and impassioned vocal's. When a band avoid the obvious they can be truly inventive and stimulating." Totally Dublin said, "…think Arcade Fire carousing with Franz Ferdinand and you're nearly there." The Leeds Guide ' they sound like Roxy Music having a fight with the Pixies down a Northern backstreet." and The Sunday Tribune called them "the perfect pop machine". "Stylish, sophisticated pop for stylish, sophisticated people" Johnnie Craig In Dublin www.myspace.com/theaftermathband www.myspace.com/victors www.myspace.com/innate 4th JUNG TURKS Jung Turks are James P. Rooney (drums, percussion, hand sonics) and Edward D. Rooney (nylon string guitar). 'Jung Turks are something special; they combine their superb musicianship on both the drums and guitar with an eclectic mix of genres to create intricate and highly original music...this is some of the best instrumental rock music out there.' irishrockers.com 'Jung Turks approach is unlike any other...a strange and wonderful beast' - Kernan Andrews, Arts Editor, Galway Advertiser 'With just classical guitar and drums for comfort, Jung Turks sound like the offspring of the White Stripes and Rodrigo y Gabriela; lost musical children who were reared in a South American gypsy camp by former Faith No More guitarist Jim Martin and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, before being sent to boot camp with Frank Zappa, who in turn sent them to the bog where they dug turf and fusion music.' - Ronan Casey, Westmeath Examiner 'Really, really crazy and innovative...amazing band' - Ed Larrikin, Larrikin Love www.jungturks.com www.myspace.com/jungturks 8th The CHERRIES & guests aeonfusion * 'Fronted by Kells woman Gemma McGowan and musically engineered by Drogheda musician Joanne Kieran (with assistance from Rosanna Schwarzacher on cello and David Breen on drums). The Cherries fuse a kind of cabaret sound (hints of Brecht/Weill) with a challenging dynamism last heard on long lost albums by Laura Nyro. They're not to everyones taste, which means there has to be something good going on, and have just released they're debut album 'Vertigo Girl'. www.myspace.com/bitethecherries 9th SHARON SHANNON & guest Robert Sarazin Blake ++ Sharon Shannon brings her stripped back acoustic band on the road for some select intimate gigs around the country. Joined by Mike McGoldrick, Dezi Donelly and Jim Murray they'll be performing songs from Sharons latest album 'Renegade'. Expect a rousing reception in such an intimate venue. Special guest on the night is American Folksinger Robert Sarazin Blake who is on an extensive Irish Tour throughout April & May. Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as 'the greatest Irish musician of her generation", Sharon Shannon and her Renegade line-up have just returned from a sell-out tour of Australia and New Zealand. After the Brisbane show the Queensland Post reviewer wrote...'I can't ever remember feeling so lifted and exhilarated by a performance......and the RENEGADE CD endorses all of that'. Australian national station ABC Triple J, playlisted RENEGADE and Australia grooved to the new sound of Irish/Hip-hop on radio and flocked to the shows. Starting at Bellingen Global Carnival in New South Wales and ending at Tauranga Festival in New Zealand, Sharon and company had audiences on their feet everywhere. In fact she picked up a new fan at the legendary Basement Club in Sydney. The Sultan of Brunei was in town and requested a table for him and his all female entourage, confessing he was a fan!! NECKBELLY, a funky track from RENEGADE is now used by BBC for a new TV music series Blas Ceol. Renowned for her high energy live shows and her collaborations across all musical genres from the avant-garde classical with NIGEL KENNEDY to outlaw-country music with WILLIE NELSON, the new album and line -up RENEGADE sees Sharon explore new hip-hop rhythms with her predominantly traditional compositions. Joined by Manchester's Mike McGoldrick (Afro-Celt Sound Systems) on flute, Dezi Donnelly on fiddle and Jim Murray on guitar and backed by her BIG BAND........ 'RENEGADE' is Sharon's first studio album since 2003. Following the success of the Double Platinum "Collection 2005" and "Live at Dolans DVD" which went straight to No. 1 in the charts last year, Sharon is back with an album which showcases her constantly expanding musical landscape and her ability to cross over in new musical genres. Joining Sharon are Mike McGoldrick (Afro-Celt Sound Systems) on flute, Dezi Donnelly on fiddle and Jim Murray on guitar. Recorded at Sharon's own Poets Corner studio, the album and new line up both called RENEGADE which mainly features new original material by the quartet, is a heady mix of traditional Irish with hip-hop beats, ragga, jazz and world music inflections. "Renegade" also features Justin Adams (Tinariwen producer and Robert Plant's guitarist) John Reynolds (Sinead O'Connor, Indigo Girls), 2Play, Roachie, saxman Richie Buckley (Van Morrison) and Donald Shaw (Capercaillie) to mention a few. www.myspace.com/sharonshannon www.myspace.com/robertsarazinblake 10th DISCO NOUVEAU with DJ Eddie Brennan, Gavin McDonagh & Len Tilk "DISCO NOUVEAU returns on Saturday 10th May, following a hugely successful night in April, with ElectriCity and Bodytonic resident, DJ Eddie Brennan. Similar to all Disco Nouveau's guests so far, Eddie was nominated for best Irish DJ in the 2007 SLICK DJ MAG Irish Dance Awards. He is a relative new-comer compared to both Barry Redsetta and Sunil Sharpe, but his credentials are equally impressive. Eddie was heavily involved in ElectriCity's "Electric Shock" events in 2007, supporting international guests such as Chris Liebing, Technasia, Magda and Craig Richards. Nowadays you can see him perform at the POD as a POGO resident on Saturday nights (when we haven't stolen his services!). Eddie will be playing a mix of house and techno music ranging from minimal to banging. The warm up sets will be orchestrated by DISCO NOUVEAU resident Gavin Mac Donagh (gamadon) and Len Tilk, who makes his debut with some new minimal techno. Len is originally from Latvia and has recently moved to Mullingar. The nights are going from strength to strength so far, so get down early and experience Mullingar's only underground-dance club night. DISCO NOUVEAU can also confirm the arrival of ACII DISCO's head-honcho, Al Keegan on 7th June and anyone who visited The HUB in 2007 for an ACII DISCO party will know that it was one of the best nights out in Dublin To keep up to date with DISCO NOUVEAU gigs, post your views on events and download minimal, house and techno mixes from the resident DJ's, check out the new web page www.myspace.com/disconouveauclub or www.myspace.com/gamadon . Frustrated by record company woes, among other things, it didn't last and they called it a day. Now, with an album deal under their belts, the core twosome of Devereux and Shane Wearen are back in earnest, supported by a revolving line-up that includes guitar maestro Colm Quearney. The Pale enjoyed a magical night in July at the Stables to celebrate the release of their first album in years 'The Contents of a Shipwreck'. Expect this night to be no different. www.myspace.com/thepaleie www.thepale.ie 17th The AUSTRALIAN PEARL JAM & guests The Parade Probably the finest tribute act to Pearl Jam you are likely to see! John is a native of Cork, the county he lovingly describes as 'the centre of the universe', and it has been a huge influence on this singer/songwriter. Vocally, Spillane is quite unique with an almost sean nós like element and has been described as having a voice 'full of honesty, commitment and sensitivity'. John says of the album… "An album of songs in honour of the Island of Ireland, Mother Ireland, and of my own Mother - Mary Teresa Spillane". "Dark Rosaleen - dark and mysterious woman of dreams, your eyes are tired from weeping, the lakes of your tears glimmer gently on the island of visions and dreams. Fairy-tale visions of childhood, the magic and the pain of growing up in this crazy, magical land, the search for love, love lost and love found, and the never-ending dream of freedom, inside and out". '... some of the most skillfully crafted, vividly realized songs anyone has written in Ireland over the past dozen years.' Earle Hitchner, premier writer/reviewer for Irish Echo and The Wall Street Journal. www.myspace.com/johnspillane www.myspace.com/lilacblues 24th The ACID TEST (EP Release) & guests the Gandhis + Nick Carswell The Acid Test are Richie Kelly, Aidan O'Brien, Daire McCoy & Molton Boron. Hailing from the musical and cultural metropolis of Mullingar, their music has been described as guitar and electro beats with hues of abstract electronica welded to mighty 4/4 dance grooves. Influenced by everyone from Faust to Fourtet and Radiohead to Rachmaninoff, the Acid Test are a thrilling combination of melody and style that leave audiences begging for more. This night marks the release of their long awaited EP. www.myspace.com/theacidtest 29th SONGWRITER 9 – Unplugged in Mullingar (Monthly unplugged showcase in the Stables venue – No stage, no PA, listening audience) ** Taking place in the venue on the floor rather than on the stage with the performer surrounded by the audience to create a nice listening / performing environment there will be 4 quality acts each month including some big local acts trying out new material as well as touring artists from all around the world. This months line up features Nigel Place, Laoibhaise Brennan & Liz Seaver all from Dublin plus from Tullamore Mark Conway who has played here before with Paddy Slattery many times. www.myspace.com/stableslive 30th HOARSEBOX + guests Skinsize Kings Clap your hands and say Hoarsebox - a great live band who combine their lively instrumentation with four-part harmonies and bucket loads of energy. Mixing guitar, bass, drums and piano, while singing upbeat melodies, Hoarsebox strive to create a warm and open atmosphere where people can dance, sing and clap their hands... or each other! People tend to sweat from over-dancing gyration syndrome at their gigs - you will too. The band work to create a rich, gloopy and melodic sound that is quintessentially Hoarsebox, although it is inspired by sources from far and wide. Hoarsebox have already played all over Ireland and the UK, including a support tour with famous band The Stranglers, and Irish artists such as Republic of Loose, The Walls, Boss Volenti, as well as headline gigs at Spiegeltent, Whelans and other well-known Irish venues. The band releases their Cuckooland EP in May 08 along with the single "Rosey" which is already receiving airplay on quite a few stations nationally. The gig at The Stables on May 30th is one date on an Irish tour which brings them to Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kerry and a show at The Button Factory in Dublin. They have also been included on the line-up for a few Irish festivals in the Summer. www.myspace.com/hoarsebox www.myspace.com/skinsizekings 31st CHUMBAWAMBA (Acoustic) + guests ++ Chumbawamba are back, armed with acoustic guitars, accordion and trumpet, five-part harmonies, a bucketful of attitude and a new 25-track album called 'The Boy Bands Have Won'. Chumbawamba aren't like other bands. I think that was clear around 20 years ago when they made their first album, 'Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records' as a response to Live Aid. Chumbawamba began with a mission to be interesting and arresting, to be literate and understanding. The new album is a collection of such ideas; some are just passing thoughts, others are fully-formed songs. The album is gentle and warm in tone, but caustic in intent. There's nothing worse than being wishy-washy; nothing worse than just sounding lovely and providing a backdrop for a gentle, pleasant, warm-weather pleasantness. 'The Boy Bands Have Won' is Chumbawamba playing with culture, with the idea of recycling our own culture. We all have this vast history of 'stuff', musical and historical and in art and sport and politics and a million other things. And it's all there for the taking. www.myspace.com/acousticchumbawamba * Free Gig in the Yukon Bar ** Free Gig in the Stables Venue ++ Tickets available behind the bar / Heartbeat City www.stableslive.com info@stableslive.com www.myspace.com/stableslive www.bebo.com/stableslive JUNE 1st THE GUGGENHEIM GROTTO & guest Peter Doran Irish based trio, The Guggenheim Grotto are; Kevin May, Mick Lynch and Shane Power; multi-instrumentalists, completely at home in charge of a breathtaking array of instruments both onstage and in the studio. Together as a duo since 2003, Mick and Kevin cut their teeth playing the Dublin songwriter circuit. Having produced and recorded a collection of five songs in the confines of Kevin's tiny flat, in 2004 they approached Shane (a busy musician and studio engineer) to put the finishing touches to what resulted in the self-released 'A Lifetime In Heat' EP. Instantly impressed by what he heard, Shane and the duo kept in touch, exchanging ideas, occasionally gigging together and eventually combining talents to form the line-up which then set about recording their first Album. "Waltzing Alone" was released to critical acclaim in Ireland and its first promotional single "Told You So" rapidly became a firm favourite on Irish airwaves. Within weeks the song climbed to # 12 on the Irish National Airplay Charts. In America, awareness of the band began to rise due to the support of DJ's like David Dye at WXPN (Philadelphia) , Kate Bradley on XM50'S "The Loft" and Nic Harcourt at KCRW. The band was invited to the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios in London where they recorded a live session for Nic Harcourt's show 'Morning Becomes Eclectic'. Shortly after signing to NYC-based indie label United For Opportunity, the band released Waltzing Alone in the U.S. More and more American College Radio and AAA stations picked up on the album. The band was invited to showcase at SXSW where the guys played a brace of gigs before heading off to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles for a KCRW sponsored show at the Hotel Café. An hour-long live session for XM Radio's 'The Loft' was recorded. Also around this time, Kevin was the first lyricist to be featured on WNUR's Literary Show. TGG returned to the states for its first U.S. national tour. Notable moments during the tour included a World Café session with David Dye in Philadelphia, taping a podcast with the people at Paste Magazine in Atlanta and performing at the renowned Mountain Stage radio/TV show in Charleston, West Virginia, which is syndicated on 180 cable stations. Returning for yet another U.S. round last year, TGG swept up more success. A five-night mini residency at NYC's Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction allowed the guys time to record a few live shows. In-studio radio gigs in most markets, Apple in-stores in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and stunning press coverage from The Boston Globe and The Washington Post amongst others moved the band up a notch in the U.S. The big kicker, however, was when within only one day the album rocketed to the No. 1 downloaded folk album on iTunes, where it stayed for weeks. Special guest on the night Peter Doran makes an all too rare appearance to showcase some songs from his upcoming second album. No stranger to the Stables stage Peter has recently been playing around the country as part of Mark Gearys backing band. No mean feat indeed!! www.myspace.com/guggenheimgrotto www.myspace.com/peterdoran | |||

| April Line Up at the Stables | Il y a 600 jours | ||
| APRIL 3rd ROB SMITH + guest Cillian Foster * What happens if you get a mix between The Stone Roses, The Beatles and a hint of Paul Weller with a little solo twist? The answer is ROB SMITH. Rob Smith burst onto the Dublin music scene in late 2003. During this time he toured extensively in many venues around the country. Sharing stages with many national and international acts, he earned himself praise musically from people such as Christy Dignam (Aslan) to Mark Coyle (Oasis' producer). Around this time he made a demo CD called "The Soul Shaker CD" which he'd give out at gigs which ultimately gave him an audience to play his own shows to in venues. Between then and now Rob has played live at venues such as Vicar Street, Olympia Theatre, Whelans, The Village, Eamonn Dorans, The Sugar Club, Sky Portlaoise, Dolans Limerick, TF Royal Theatre Castlebar, Limelight Belfast, Music Factory Carlow, Empire Music Hall Belfast, Cavern Club Liverpool, Garage Glasgow to name but a few. His debut album "Throwing It All Away" was recorded in November 2007 when Rob packed up all his guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, laptops, pedals, boards…you name it…wrote and recorded the album within a week, playing all the instruments himself. Sounds like a rushed job. Not really. He had this all in his head for years. It sounds perfect. And March 2008 will see it's release. But enough of that. What makes Rob Smith different? F**k knows...check it out for yourself. Anyone who said they ever walked away from a Rob Smith gig disappointed obviously has never been to one. Maybe that's it! www.myspace.com/robsmithireland 4th BABYJENX + guests Tornado Lovely & Daire O'Reilly (Superstate) "So beautiful, so intoxicating, so heavenly . . . Gary Reddy's voice reaches soaring glorious falsettos with an ease that would make Thom Yorke envious" – Musician.ie Named after a character in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Baby Jenx have been together since the summer of 2005. Influenced by the big stadium sounds of U2, Coldplay and Radiohead, but with their own musical aesthetic firmly to the fore, they played their debut gig in legendary Dublin venue Mother Redcaps later that same year. "Gary Reddy eases the crowd in with a range of vocal pirouettes reminiscent of Thom Yorke, along with a series of gentle rock ballads" – Hot Press Over the following months, Baby Jenx honed their live skills with a multitude of gigs. Their dynamic shows at the Irish IMRO showcase, Boston's NEMO Music Festival and Castlepalooza earned them rave reviews. "Their sound has clear elements of Coldplay, and singer Gary Reddy is a natural performer and exceptional singer" – IMRO magazine They recorded their first demo with producer Declan Lonergan in Bluebird Studios in Co. Kildare. This demo received extensive radio airplay, and was immediately chosen as Hot Press magazine's 'Demo of the Fortnight' by none other than Jackie Hayden (the former CBS boss, known for giving U2 their first record deal). "The real gem is 'So Long', which opens around a slow staccato piano before it builds with sensitivity and pathos to a real ear-opener" – Jackie Hayden, Hot Press. 'So Long' also gained the band a video production through a competition run by Hot Press and TISCH School of Performing Arts in New York. The resulting video was subsequently playlisted on Sky Network's The Musician Channel. Baby Jenx so impressed their video director, filmmaker Tess Nanavati, that she commissioned them to write two original songs for her own independent film projects. 'Evenesce' and 'Nemoc' feature prominently in Nanavati's movies Dreams Of An Angel and Nemoc respectively. Baby Jenx spent the latter half of 2007 showcasing for Labels in Florida and Boston while also writing and recording material for their debut album. 2008 kicked of to a fantastic start, when the band's track 'Sell Yourself' was used as the backing track to the goals montage on RTE's show 'The Premiership'. Baby Jenx returned to the live seen with their debut Mullingar gig playing support to Aslan, having impressed the guys on the night they have since been added as support on a number of Aslan's coming shows. Waterford. Night time radio was her lifeline all through her formative years. She initially harboured hopes of being a writer but that soon gave way to her addiction to music. By the time she moved to Dublin at the age of 18, she had cultivated an obsession with songwriting. She then ventured from music studies in Trinity College through gospel choirs, free improvisation and folk ensembles to find herself at her current juncture. She has collaborated with renowned composers such as Roger Doyle and Trevor Knight, theatre director Selina Cartmell, and numerous underground bands such as Giraffe Running and Red Rocket. She has also soaked up as much of Dublin's jazz and alternative scenes as possible along the way, and is an active member of the Irish music collective The Living Room Project. Last year, Rebecca independently released an ep entitled At Sea which introduced her dark, lyrical songs to the world and won her recognition from radio presenters and listeners alike. The radio hero of her teenage years, John Kelly, even invited her to play live on his show The JK Ensemble for a week-long feature on her music. Constantly writing and exploring new territory with her fellow musicians, Rebecca's debut album came into being as a result of a low-key gig performed in a friend's living room. The songs bristled with energy and Rebecca knew this was how she wanted to record them - in a live setting. When all the musicians happened to be in New York for a time in January 2007, she corralled them in a studio for two days, and Chameleon Blues was born. Rebecca lists Tom Waits and avant-rock doyenne Annette Peacock as musical touchstones. She also names John Martyn's Solid Air and the sensual Wong Kar-Wai film In the Mood for Love as influences on Chameleon Blues. In her words, it is an album to be taken "song by song - it is episodic, but there is a common thread - desire. I really wanted there to be a freedom, an unabashed feeling to the music." So does Rebecca have a target audience in mind? "Yes and no. Let's just say that these songs are for anyone who has ever woken up in the middle of the night with their heart racing..." 'Chameleon Blues' is released on Rebecca's own label Mutineer (www.mutineermusic.com) www.rebeccacollins.net www.myspace.com/rebeccacollinsmusic www.myspace.com/petecourtney 10th TERRY LEE HALE (USA) * 1953-San Antonio, Texas: Born into an army family Terry Lee attended 10 schools in 10 different cities. They have been playing together since 1999 though they only started to perform live four years ago as the first four years were spent building the solid musical foundation they felt they required. Their sound is definitely colored by the fact that neither has any formal musical training and prefers to develop their skills through keen ears, an insatiable love for music and long hours spent honing their melodies and arrangements. They played on occasion with two classically trained violinists from Dublin. This eventually led them to gaining a support slot for Rodrigo y Gabriela in UCD in front of a packed house of approximately 800. The Mexican duo have been a constant source of inspiration for the two, showing how instrumental music on two guitars could be brought to life on-stage in front of mainstream audiences. Túcan are now one of Irelands most sought after festival acts. They have stolen the show at such festivals as the Donegal Music Festival and sliabh an iarainn, in Drumshambo Co. Leitrim, where they outshined Dervish as the support act. This seen them play to a crowd of over 1000 roaring fans. Most recently the band was spotted by the brilliant Regina Spektor who asked them to support her at her sold out concert in Tripod. They were delighted to accept the offer, and they hugely impress 1400 people. Túcan then played Irelands most prestige's festival, Electric Picnic. They were originally booked to play the POD acoustic stage at 5pm on the Saturday; this went so well the organizers asked the band to play the closing gig of the body and soul area (and the whole festival) at 2.30am Monday morning. Túcan wowed a 3000 strong crowd and have ensured a major slot at the festival this year. Túcan most recently headlined the sold out Sligo Live festival in October, sharing the stage with such acts as Alabama 3. The show is not only a musical masterpiece but is also an enthralling visual display of fantastic guitar work. Túcan gigs are renowned for high tempo crowd pleasing music that has to be seen to be believed. Túcan were the proud recipients of the 'Best Musical Group' award at the 14th annual AOIFE (association of Irish festival events) conference which was held at the end of 2007. The award was recognition of a great debut year for the pair which saw them grabbing the limelight at venues and festivals across the country. Túcan were on hand to receive the accolade and wrapped up a great night with a stomping set which was very well received by the gathered delegates. It capped what was a productive year for the duo and bodes well for them as they head into '08. Special guests on the night are Agitated Radio Pilot who impressed Tucan so much when they both supported Ronan O'Snodaigh recently that they insisted they support them for their gig. Opening up will be Junah in a 2 piece set up. Junah have played the Stables as a full band and also played the front bar as a stripped back acoustic 5 piece. This gig sees the sibling frontmen perform as a 2 piece acoustic duo. www.myspace.com/tucanmusic www.myspace.com/agitatedradiopilot www.myspace.com/junah 20th PRIVATE PARTY 24th SONGWRITER 8 – Unplugged in Mullingar (Monthly unplugged showcase in the Stables venue – No stage, no PA, listening audience) ** Taking place in the venue on the floor rather than on the stage with the performer surrounded by the audience to create a nice listening / performing environment there will be 4 quality acts each month including some big local acts trying out new material as well as touring artists from all around the world. Make sure to get down to The Stables early on April 26th as the first 50 people will receive a free copy of the 'Maps Buried in Pockets' E.P. www.myspace.com/roisinnileathlobhair www.myspace.com/tillthemorningcomes 28th EQUINOX JAZZ QUARTET play the music of Thelonious Monk 9pm Equinox is the time at which day and night are of equal length. It is a time of balance within a continually shifting process, and a period of stability in between extremes. The four members of the jazz quartet Equinox are like minded in their desire to balance opposing musical forces; tension and resolution, dissonance and consonance, innovation and tradition. The quartet consists of three Americans and an Irishman, all coming from different backgrounds, yet all working together to express a common sense of balance and harmony. Equinox is based in The Netherlands, where all the band members have made their home. All of the members of the quartet are steeped in the jazz tradition, which continually informs their search for personal avenues of expression in improvisation and composition. Among the band's strengths is a vast and wide ranging repertoire that includes originals by all band members, modern and classic jazz pieces, and choice American songbook standards. Equinox will be touring Ireland in April and May of 2008 in a project devoted to performing the music of the great composer and pianist Thelonious Monk. * Free Gig in the Yukon Bar ** Free Gig in the Stables Venue ++ Tickets available behind the bar / Heartbeat City www.stableslive.com info@stableslive.com www.myspace.com/stableslive | |||
