CHASE Beginners Day - Revised Planshace 255 días

Lads, as you know, we're trying to get a CHASE beginners day organised. We're changing the date to Saturday 4th April (because it suits more beginners), and we're going to try and get booked into the big hall at Ards leisure centre for an hour or two to get a bit of old-style Comber rules Frisbee for our newcomers.

Evening: I think we may just go out into Belfast, if anybody's interested. Don't worry Linter, we'll get a Rock Band night sometime soon.

So, are you free on Saturday 4th April, around 1ish?

PS, if you can, keep the following Saturday (11th April) free for the Easter Tournament where we will defend our title.

PPS, if anyone wants any CHASE kit, can you let me know. I'm planning to put an order through to Spreadshirt for 'I love Comber' shirts and budget cotton navy CHASE shirts in time for Easter Tournament. Also, later in the year, I'm going to put an order through to Lookfly for some Lookfly shirts and some hoodies. Let me know if you're interested.

CHASE Beginners Dayhace 264 días

We're hoping to have a CHASE beginner day either Saturday 28th March or Saturday 4th April. It's looking like it will probably be on 4th. Can everybody ask around to see if they have any friends or relatives that would be interested in trying out Ultimate Frisbee. I'll keep you posted on details.

CHASE President’s Address 2009hace 314 días

First of all, thank you to my friends and team-mates for electing me as President of CHASE. It gives me great pride as one of the founders of CHASE to see how far we have come in terms of growth, our influence in Belfast Ultimate, and our many successes to date. I would also like to congratulate our re-elected captain Marco, and also Greamer, who was elected into our newly formed position of Deputy Captain. Between them, their experience, skill, determination and enthusiasm will keep CHASE improving throughout 2009. We also have our re-elected Social Co-ordinator, who will keep our social calendars busy, and ensure that we as a team have an active social life together off the pitch.

Congratulations are in order; we voted for our own player of the year, Marco, who throughout last year led us by example, and gave us a quality of play to aspire to. We also voted on our most improved player, which went to Greamer, who now plays Ultimate like a seasoned pro, but treats team-mates of all abilities as equals. Congratulations should go to all who played for CHASE last year. Everyone without exception far exceeded any expectations regarding their quality of play. Every single CHASE player can lay claim to a portion of our success, and should take pride in that fact.

We should take note of why we were able to achieve so much in our debut year:
By and large, we were fitter, and better practised than our opposition. This comes down to our dedication in attending practises in Belfast, and at Park Way. Sunday practises undeniably gave us a distinct edge over the competition. We were also well organised, partly due to myself, but largely due to Greamer in organising lifts to practices, and organising the squad on match days. We also have the rare quality that we know each other so well. We can know how each team-mate is likely to act, and read each other with such understanding that make even the ropiest improvised plays look and seem like we practised it for years. It is the dedication to stay fit and well practised, organisation, and knowledge of each other that will stand us in our stead.

This year, we are no longer beginners, but we still have much scope for improvement. If we are to continue to be the best wee team in BU, we need to maintain our edge over the competition, and continue to improve and grow as a team. Regular training in Belfast and in Comber is where we will build our victories.

In our second year, we must also address our team’s finite nature, and continue to recruit to our ranks. We managed to recruit a handful of very worthwhile additions to CHASE over the Christmas holidays, but our recruitment has to remain on-going. In fact, an ideal time to recruit would be around the same time that the universities start, which is roughly the definition of a beginner for the Christmas Special. The university beginners have had a distinct advantage over our first-time beginners for too long, so we need to engineer the situation back in our favour come next beginner tournament. Also, as with BU, recruitment needs to start looking further than our circle of friends and relatives. Recruitment has to become one of our team’s priorities, and we need to take new, more adventurous approaches to recruitment.

With all the pressure to succeed however, we need to ensure that we never lose sight of the importance that everyone enjoys the sport of Ultimate. It is this sense of enjoyment that keeps Ultimate players coming back for more.

I’ve compiled a list of competitions that you should expect CHASE to participate in this year, and roughly what time of the year it falls on:

Competitions In 2009
Love Easter Tournament (Belfast) Easter Saturday 11th April
If you are able to, please keep this date free. In this one-day outdoor 5-a-side tournament, CHASE are hoping to be able to field 2 teams. Since it is only a relatively small time commitment (one day, as opposed to the league), it is hoped that all CHASE players (and any newcomers) can play on this day. We aim to divide the teams evenly, with the priority less on retaining the title we won last year, and more on making sure everybody gets plenty of time on the pitch, and ultimately that they enjoy themselves. It would also be a great display of our growth as a team, and what other wee teams should aspire to if we manage to field two teams.

Belfast Ultimate Summer League (Belfast) Starting June
CHASE’s main goal is to retain the league title. We succeeded last year due to regular training, and arriving to matches with a large squad. The competition is expected to be tougher this year. Swerve showed us in January that they still play very high quality Ultimate, and how their beginners from last year have improved. We must continue to improve as a team as they have, rather than rest on our laurels. Train when possible, and continue to invite newcomers to join our team.

Copa Cobanna (Nottingham) Weekend, end of August
This is a new competition that CHASE hope to enter in 2009. It is a fun party tournament, and will make a great farewell to Steve who will be moving to the Nottingham area for his new job after graduating this year.

Tune-Up! (Stirling) Weekend, start of October
CHASE’s main overseas competition in Marco’s old stomping ground. Last year CHASE finished 4th in Stirling. This year, we hope to win the competition. Hopefully we can bring a slightly bigger squad this year, and be well prepared for all that the Scottish teams can throw at us.

All BUG Tournaments
All CHASE players are eligible to play as part of BUG, and should consider playing as part of this bigger team, at higher-end competitions. Much can be learned playing at this level.

Belfast City Marathon Relay, and Ards Half-Marathon
This is something that I personally would like to do, and I would like to invite any CHASE players to join me if you are interested. I thought it would be cool to have some of us running the relay at Belfast in May, and work up to the half marathon in July.

Other Items Of Note
CHASE Kit
CHASE has both a light kit (white “I love Comber” T-shirt) and a dark kit (navy, white and orange Lookfly T-shirt). Also, with a view to make our kit more uniform, a consensus was arrived at early this year that black shorts look best with all CHASE kit. While not mandatory by any means, it is preferable that all CHASE players try to ensure that they have these items of kit for match days.

White “I love Comber” shirt:
readily available at http://nuncle.spreadshirt.net/
(Talk to me if you would like to arrange for a bulk order to split postage.)
It is hoped that we can all have a white ‘ILC’ in time for the Easter Tournament.

Navy Lookfly Top
A highly attractive garment that has to be custom made by Lookfly. It is hoped that there will be enough interest to cover the minimum order of 12 garments. Talk to me if you would like one of these shirts.
I aim to place an order for these shirts in time for the summer league, and overseas competitions.

Black Shorts
These are readily available at all sports shops.

CHASE Beginners Day
When the weather gets significantly better, and preferably before the Easter Tournament, we should aim to have our own beginners day to introduce all the beginners that were unable to make it to the Christmas special, as well as anyone else who we can get interested. What I personally envision is a day out to Crawfordsburn, playing Ultimate, and having a barbecue at the side, some drinks and general good times. This is only my idea – any alternative suggestions are most welcome. If we can ensure a good day out is had by all, all the better for retaining future CHASE players.

CHASE Hoodies
Interest has been expressed in having CHASE hoodies made. We need to finalise the design we’re going for, and find out who would like one, then go ahead and order. This would be great for travelling as a team for Copa Cobanna and Tune Up.

Photography
This year, we should make more of an effort to take plenty of photos and videos for posterity. Plus if we manage to get match footage, it gives us a great excuse to have a video night at someone’s house. There is nothing better than looking back at old photos of tournaments and competitions. Plus they make great additions to our website which is currently under construction.

Well, that’s all from me for now. Looking forward to the forthcoming season. The CHASE is on gentlemen.

David.

CHASE 2008hace 344 días

2008 has seen the creation of Comber’s finest Ultimate team, CHASE. You may be curious to know how CHASE was formed. Well to answer that, we need to go back to the summer of 2004. Marco came back home after his first year at Stirling uni, where he had become a member of their uni team, Blaze. When a few of us met up to play some football that summer, Marco showed us his new Frisbee, and like Moses, imparted these simple rules:

“Do not run with the Frisbee.”
“When dropped, give it to the other team.”
“You score by catching it in the endzone.”

And with these three simple rules, we played scrappy games of pseudo-Ultimate, in-between small games of football on the playground of our local primary school, where most of us went when we were youngsters - Andrews Memorial. We played ‘Frisbee’ as we called it then anytime we met up for a kick about, which was usually every Sunday in the summer.

Fast forward to early December 2007 at a poker night at my house. Around the table were most of the Comber lads as well as Adam Glover. During the conversation, Adam mentioned that there was a beginner’s tournament after Christmas, and that we should enter a team. The general consensus around the table was that if it truly was a beginner’s tournament, we should do well, since we have had experience in throwing Frisbees, and have played Ultimate (of sorts) before. And so a bunch of us piled into the car and headed up to the Valley Leisure Centre for the tournament, where we were soundly beaten by the very smartly dressed Swerve, among other teams. We did manage to save face though, and ended up finishing 5th out of 6 teams, which doesn’t sound great, but we all had a really great time there!

We decided to join in with BUG Saturday practises and learn more about Ultimate When we found out there would be similar competitions throughout the year, we decided to properly form a team. Meetings were held, and after much deliberation, came up with the name CHASE (which as you should know stands for Comber Has Awesome Spud Energy). Marco was unanimously elected captain, and we resurrected our Sunday get-togethers, only now there was no football, only serious training for Ultimate, and the upcoming mini-tournament in Easter.

We invested in matching ‘I love Comber’ custom T shirts and arrived at the venue on that cold morning. We were an unknown quantity, and nobody had any idea how much effort had gone in to our training and preparation. Marco led, and CHASE followed. We managed to win all but one of our matches that day, which put us in a three-way tie for first, but on points difference, we won, and took the title back home to Comber. That victory, even though it was by a narrow margin, gave us a real confidence boost.

After that, we decided to get serious with our kit. We met again, and brainstormed logo and colour scheme ideas. We settled on the CHASE flameball and a navy, white and orange scheme and sent the plans over to Lookfly to do the rest.

In training, we upped our efforts, after seeing what we could do at Easter, and we made good our preparation for the Summer league, as well as creating a disc golf course out of our training ground, Park Way.

On the lead up to (the first) Super Saturday, Lucozade helpfully started the ad campaign “The CHASE is on”, and so we coined the phrase as our own. As the weeks went on, matches were won, and after ten matches, and some serious competition, CHASE emerged unbeaten with a full 30 points at the end of the league to take the title as Belfast Ultimate Summer League champions.

Seeing what we could do locally, CHASE ventured out of the country to Marco’s old stomping ground, Stirling to play at Tune-Up, our first full sized tournament. We looked to BUG to bolster our ranks and gained the experience of Garry, Ob and Luke. Strengthened, CHASE went on to make it to the top four of the competition – much higher than our seeded position of 15th. Many heads were turned when Marco’s old team Blaze noticed that he had made it to play both days of Tune-Up for the first time in his playing career!

With the experience gained this year, and ability to utilise strong defensive plays, Stirling CHASE formed the defensive line for BUG, and played a decisive role in taking the Plate winner’s award at Cork.

At the end of year BU awards, Greamer took Best Beginner, and Adam Glover took The Spirit Award - both very well deserved in my opinion.

Special thanks should go to:
Marco for bringing Ultimate to Comber, and for his excellent captaincy all this year, as well as forming the Bebo page.
Glover for forming the beginners team, and introducing us to BUG.
Kris for driving us in training to increase our fitness levels much more than we would have done ourselves.
Greamer for the organisation of the team, getting us out to practises, and for playing so well all year, as well as never missing a match.
Steve for his commitment to and direction in training, and for coming up with a lot of ideas for the team, as well as setting up the new Facebook page.
Mucka for never missing a match, and for the glue hands.
Linter, Ben, Bo and Ewan for adding youth to the team, and helping us build the squad.
Hazel for giving us a fitness level to aspire to, and the D machine in Easter.
John, for the added expertise during the league, and in training.

It’s been a great year guys, and I’ve really enjoyed playing alongside you all. The banter has been awesome. I’m proud of what we have achieved, and the improvements that everyone has made over the year.

Thanks for the memories. Very much looking forward to next year. The CHASE is on!
David.

We are having our ‘End Of Year Meeting’ next Wednesday, 12th November. As you probably know, there is a beginners tournament coming up which is a great opportunity to recruit newcomers. Ahead of the meeting, can everyone begin to ask as many people as they can to come to the Belfast Christmas Special, which is a beginners tournament, and very important for bringing in new blood. Numbers is what we want, so ask anybody and everybody. All they need is one functioning hand or device that is able to throw and catch a disc. I have said that CHASE should be able to enter at least 3 teams.

The tournament is on Saturday 20th December at the Valley Leisure Centre (just up the M2 a wee bit) and will probably start reasonably early in the morning (I think last year was about 9 or 10am) and dependant on the number of teams, is likely to finish after lunchtime. Numbers is what we want. It’s a great wee fun tournament with no pressure. A few of us went to it last year, and it was great banter.

Ideas for people to invite:
Work buddies
Drinking buddies
Friends
Neighbours
Brothers and sisters
Girlfriends (and boyfriends)
Anyone that we have previously invited out before
Flatmates
People from uni
Old uni buddies

Mucka
As above. Any of the ones you drink with in the Comber bars?

Greamer
As above. Would Ashley be interested?

Marco
As above. Would your sister(s) be interested?

Stephen
As above. Norman and gayville. Any uni buddies, or NI people from Parr Academy?

John
As above. Same as Steve. Would your sister play?

David
As above. Matthew Milliken, Jill and Harrington, Laura and her friend Holly.

Kris
As above. Heather, Debbie, Medical buddies, big Frank?

Hazel?
Will you be in the country?

Linter, Ben and Bo
As above. Get the flatmates over.

Ewan
Will you be in the country?

Glover
Will you be making your own team, or folding in with CHASE (as per your contract)? As above. JC and Dave Garland?

NB, Ob, Luke and Garry if they aren’t making their own teams.

CHASE Team Meetinghace 399 días

Hello my friends. I think a CHASE team meeting would be useful, mostly to get prepared for the Christmas Beginner's Tournament. Week after Cork sound good? What nights are you all free next week to come to the pub?

Tune Me Up - By The Late Arrivalhace 406 días

CHASE have grown significantly in strength and reputation over the course of this year in small 5 a side competitions. With Tune Up, the time was ripe to test our mettle in a full sized, 7 a side outdoor tournament.

CHASE has a large enough squad (13 men have lined up to represent Comber over this year so far), but as we all know, getting a full squad to commit to any match date is nigh on impossible. So with a solid core of 7 available CHASE players (Stephen Graham, Gareth McShane, Alan McWatters, Stephen Hammond, Chris Linter (and myself David Hammond to turn up on the second day)) we turned to the ranks of BUG, and recruited ourselves Luke Carlisle, Garry Hughes and Ob, of Kebab Hammer, Swerve, and LDW respectively.

Unfortunately I missed the first day due to a wedding, but while waiting in the airport Saturday lunchtime, there was some good news, and some bad news. The good news was that CHASE had just won their first match. The bad news was that John had to play for Dark Horses, because they were too short. In numbers. By the time I was through security, CHASE had won the second match. But an outbreak of cramp had started to take hold on our boys. When I touched down in Glasgow I thought the fairytale had ended before I even arrived - CHASE lost their third match. As I read down Steve’s text message, my spirits picked up again; we had won the crossover game and were placed in the top 8 for Sunday!

Marco picked me up from the train station that evening, and we both walked round to Kelly’s (Marco’s sister’s) flat, which would become CHASE HQ for the weekend. And what a way to defend your HQ than with a quarter mile 45º hill climb. Apparently (according to Luke) walking up such a steep hill is good if you have cramps in your legs. Not so good if you are carrying up a big bag and wearing a sombrero round your neck.

All the team were suitably knackered and drenched after heavy rain during the day. So we all got washed and changed and headed out for some grub. Tescos first for supplies for Sunday, then a chippy and a carry out for the evening. Steve was particularly upset at what the Scottish call a burger - no bap, and battered and deep fried. Crazy Scottish. Back to the flat, and a number of rules for the night’s drinking game were established:

Drink if you…
see an animal*
see someone wearing a hat*
hear Pandy (Kelly’s flat-mate) say ‘Shit’
see someone crying - great during X-Factor. Seriously, that show is ridiculous for crying. The montage at the end did real damage.

*I’m lead to believe that if a fox wearing a cap was seen, you had to down everything you owned immediately.

Then we threw on our ponchos and sombreros for the fancy dress party except for Ob who was dressed in a farmer hat, and Linter who was dressed in his Richard Ashcroft leather jacket. Through no effort of our own, every poncho was IDENTICAL. We turned a few heads and raised a few smiles as we walked down to the bus stop for the uni. Stirling university has a pretty gay policy for entry to the union - every non student had to be signed in under a student. Fortunately there was enough students to go around, but seriously, what a gay door policy.

The boat race - CHASE whupped Stars’ asses at downing bottles in turn, and managed to finish first with an extra bottle downed for good measure. Marco led his squad to the dance floor for a few songs, guitar in hand, Fountains Of Wayne blaring out of the speakers. Balloons were chucked, and party poppers popped. A lot of the team though it would be a good idea to throw back bucket after bucket of energy drink - not that we needed any sleep before Sunday(!)

The way home was nearly in jeopardy as the night bus was almost full to capacity by the time we arrived down. The bus driver was getting pissy too. A couple of lads were chucked off the bus for some unknown reason. Luckily we managed to get some standing room upstairs, and proceeded to sing and talk loudly for the journey home. I’m sure the bus driver was delighted.

The next morning, Kelly’s toilet took it hard. I think everyone had the shits to some degree that morning. The toilet got more ass than Marco on one of his little ‘trips’. So, after an improvised breakfast, we packed our kit bags and made our way to the uni grounds - which by the way are stunning: level ground, neat, cut grass and surrounded by either mountains or forest. Makes a change from Stranmillis embankment. The ponchos were used to full effect that morning, to provide us with an extra layer of warmth on the cool crisp morning. Our first match was at 11, giving us a little extra time to warm up. First match of the day, Ro Sham Bo 2.

Joining us that day was Marco’s friend Sam. As we lined up, Greamer uttered the immortal words, “Is that two teams, or just one?” Ro Sham had numbers on their side, and made use of them by steadily rotating their players. CHASE had their work cut out here. Everyone managed to stay tight on their man, or in some cases, GB women’s team member. Points were long, and foul and line calls contentious. When the horn blew, CHASE were a point down, needing two points to turn the match around. Ro Sham wanted it, but CHASE wanted it more. Steve made a textbook pancake catch to score off Marco and we drew level after yet another overly long point. Final point, and the frustration was showing. Wild throws near the endzone, and crazy drops made this last one a grueling test of endurance. Luke got free in the endzone, and caught the disc as it went dangerously close to the line. From my point of view, I thought it looked in, as did Luke, but with hindsight, that would have been a crappy way to end the match. Ro Sham argued it out, and Luke let it go. And so continued the epic point. Turnover followed turnover, neither team willing to give up, but not finding the decisive conclusion to the match. Finally, we managed to get the D once again, and Greamer picked out the winning score to finish the match. I was so pleased, I nearly chinned him when I went in for the victory hug!

After that, we had what seemed like half the day to kill until our next match. We were placed at least 4th, and confidence was rising. I think at this stage, tournament spooning was initiated. It’s always great to see Ultimate players bonding so well. Then some crazy dude decided to jump the heap of prone athletes, in studs no less. I mustn’t forget the legendary story that Luke told during this interlude:

“Apparently there was a rugby player who dislocated this leg , and when they put it back in, they trapped a testicle in there. That bit you can believe. But I also heard that he screamed so loud that he ripped his vocal cords and died!”

I have it on good authority (Kris) that this isn’t possible. Even so, it had us rolling around with laughter.

Our second match of the day was against Stars 1. Clearly an experienced team, they had height and pace. They also kept a tight 4 man cup on us for most of the game. Thankfully Marco had drilled us on how to cope with the cup, and our experienced handlers kept their heads, and we worked hard to make gains that match. End result was close enough, but Stars made each of our points very hard work. Stars made good use of their height and experience, and took the victory by one point.

Our final match was against Flatball, and what a bastard of a match to finish on. Flatball managed to score a couple quick hucks to the endzone, and our morale was quickly broken. When we were on the disc, we let tiredness and frustration get the better of us, and wild hucks more often than not lost us the disc. We ran hard, and didn’t give in, but we lost our determination in that match, and took a sound beating. It’s not often that Greamer subs himself off, so when he does, you know there’s something wrong. In the end, Flatball beat us approximately 13-3. We then treated them to a game of silent disc, which I don’t think they entirely understood, but the only one able to get a silent catch was a Flatball player.

We headed off to get showered and changed at the grounds, then watched the final of Stars vs Ro Sham Bo 1st team. The support for Stars was strong. Nobody likes Ro Sham too much it seems. In the end Ro Sham Firsts took the title. We ended up 4th out of 16. Not bad for being seeded 15th. We took the party prize as well. Embers got spirit. We headed off for a slap up meal, and a more relaxed night in the pub. There we met a special fellow called Dave, a friend of Marco’s, who proceeded to call us all cunts. But in the nicest possible way. Steve attempted to tell Luke’s earlier story, but I think more amusement was got from how hard Steve was laughing, and how poorly he retold the story.

Back to the flat, and a more docile team settled down to sleep. I wish the rest of them were on the energy drinks that night. Ob was out like a light, and the snoring was on like someone moving furniture. So I moved out of the hall, into the living room, and found a spot in the dark. Apparently I snore as well. Enough to warrant a pillow to the chest to wake me up. So there I was, in a room full of grumpy team mates, and what do I see when I look behind me, a rotten mouldy butternut squash. This thing had fur. And it had assimilated a nearby roll of kitchen roll, and part of a table leg. It was so close to my head that I was under suspicion for being assimilated as well.

We had a more relaxed morning on the Monday, washing up, packing up and watching Jeremy Kyle. On the journey home, many rounds of Top Trumps were played. I think the general consensus was that Lord Of The Rings Deck was the best. Marco and Linter ended up going head to head for over an hour on that deck. Marathon dinosaurs was a good deck as well, enabling the whole team to get playing - apart from Luke, who never seemed to win a hand ever. Top Trumps, poker where we bet with sweets, and plenty of good banter saw us back to Belfast tired, but happy and satisfied.

4th out of 16 in our first 7 a side competition and taking the party prize is something to be proud of. Plus it leaves us something to aspire to. Top 3 next year?

Thanks to the tournament organizers for putting on a well run tournament, in some top notch facilities. Thanks to Kelly and Pandy to putting us up for the weekend. Thanks to Garry, Luke and Ob for joining us for the weekend, as well as our pick ups, Will, Ross, KG and Sam, and thanks to Marco for bringing us over to such a fine tournament. Thanks to all my team-mates, for playing so well, and generally being awesome good fun. I had a blast of a weekend, and look forward to doing it all again next year. The CHASE is on.

David.
