| Its that time of year again - Software Freedom Day 2009 - Dundee | 185 dni temu | |||
| Hi Guys, Well its come to that time of year again, that we are starting plan's for this years Software Freedom Day. Which will be held on the 19th of September. I have sent you this email because you where either involved with last years event or you have shown some interest in being involved with this years event. We are at a very embryonic stage at the moment, and really this email is kind of a heads up. I'm hoping that some of you guys would be prepaired to do some talks, or have some ideas of things we can do either to promote the event, or exhibits we can showcase during the day. We had a very successful years last year, and of course we're hoping to match that. Please feel free to email me your ideas, suggestions and thoughts, and of course feel free to discuss this matter with the TayLug Mailing list. If you know someone that may be interested in getting involved feel free to pass this on, or send me their details and i will get in touch with them. I look forward to your response Arron Finnon President Abertay Linux Society | ||||

| Hi Guys, Just a quick heads up on the online petition that has been setup asking the government to look at deploying Free and Open Source OS's in schools. Personally for me this is a no brainer however i'm sure someone will disagree with me at some point, if you think that more Free and Open Source OS's should be in Schools then get your name on the petition. http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/non... | Finux YouTube Ripper Bash Script - For Linux Users | 293 dni temu | |||
| Hi Guys, Well i thought that i would post this up, i've been using it for a while and after reading the whole pwnyoutube.com (http://pwnyoutube.com/) thing, basically if you put pwn before any YouTube url you can download the audio and video for that song or whatever it is. So if you took this url http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-C80... and changed it to http://www.pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=T-.... I thought "well hay its cool, but if your a geek you will have had something setup for a while" and this is what i've been using. Basically its a small bash script, its design is to pull a .flv file from YouTube.com and convert it a .avi and then extract a .mp3 from it. It has a couple of dependencies and it is written purely for my personal use and so is custom to me. However i thought that i would post it here if anyone wants to use it then please do, if you want to change it please do, if you want to ignore this then please do. You need to have YouTube-dl, ffmpeg, and Mplayer installed, if your using Ubuntu its pretty easy to do, but the sites for them are; http://www.arrakis.es/~rggi3/youtube-dl/ < YouTube-dl site http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news... < Mplayer site http://www.ffmpeg.org/ < FFMpeg site You supply the script the YouTube URL you want to rip, it then asks you to what name you want for the file. When it is finished it will move the .mp3 file into /home/$USER/Music, and the .avi into /home/$USER/Music/Videos and clean up .flv file and anything else left over. The script is pretty self explanatory and feel free to do with it as you wish, i offer no technical support for it not that i think any are actually needed. There are probably hundreds of better alternatives. If its any use to you then feel free to make a comment on it, and pass it around to whoever you want. To download it either visit http://finux.110mb.com/finuxdownload... or open up a terminal and type wget http://finux.110mb.com/finuxdownload... Make sure that the file is executable either by right clicking on the file and setting the permissions there, or by doing this in the terminal; chmod +x ./finux-youtube.ripper.sh I tend to put all my scripts in a /home/$USER/bin folder, however its up to you where you store this. Its executed the same way any bash script is ./finux-youtube-ripper.sh There you go guys, nothing too exciting Finux Out, sorry guys this will only work on Linux Systems | ||||

| Well if September was a month that I would never forget than January comes up as the biggest beginning to a year that I've ever seen. (however these are for personal reasons). I'm very proud to announce the birth of my second daughter Ava Megan Finnon – who was born at 12:48pm on the 20th of January (yes that's right Obama's inauguration, I mean his first with mistakes) and weighed 6lb 1 ½ oz. She is very beautiful indeed, and yes I am allowed to say that, as with my first daughter she was born with her eye's wide open and there is nothing in the world that beats your offspring looking right back at you. My girlfriend Sharlene was an absolute star, and was the personification of strength itself. As some of you may now my daughter was 11 days late, and was delivered via c-section (the baby was what is known as in breech, which means she was the wrong way round, on a side note so was my eldest daughter), however she was back up on her feet within hours and was discharged 2 days later. I was lucky this time, a little more prepared mentally, and my Linux Society responsibilities where tailored off by the fantastic team we have in place now, big thanks to Nick and "Big" Kris, they have both been fantastic and everyone else that has made it a little easier for me. ( you know who you are) As some of you may or may not know, the Linux Society was recently written about in this months Linux Format (UK edition Issue 115), and it was very pleasant surprise to me and the rest of the society to have such nice things said about the work we do, getting peer recognition of the work we do can only help to heighten a already motivated user group. It seems a life time ago when myself, William Cameron, and Jennifer Higgins started this society. Seeing through a tough year, knowing that what was happening could grow and mature into a thriving community. As the society has changed with its growing members so has the whole experience. Long gone are the days that we don't know what the talk is before we're at the meeting. We've made many, many good friends along the way as the society has changed and this was demonstrated with the volume of congratulations messages that I received, and everyone thank you for those messages. In the same Linux Format article EdLUG was also mentioned and it seems Scotland is becoming an epicentre of the UK Linux Scene (and open source of course). http://www.edlug.org.uk/ For me it seems so strange, for nearly two years we struggled to find speakers, and now we're always booked up 6 weeks in advance (and I only do a talk once in a blue moon compared to every other week), and I personally think that it is a wider adoption of Linux thanks to the many and wide ranging netbooks that are running Linux. I was shocked this year at freshers fair how many people had already been using Linux, and many of them had been introduced via the Asus EEE's. I'm looking forward to seeing if that would be replicated again this year. Well back to business I suppose, and I have a few Linux Society stuff that I would like to mention. Firstly we are looking at a redesign of the web site, for many reasons but one of the key ones was a usability issues. I'm not too sure if I agree but the one thing that does hit me, is that our site has very little about who and what we are. I think that is a shame as people coming to our site really don't find that much out about us, but hay at least they see that we like to help people with their Linux discovery. There is a chance for members to get involved in this process and I would advice that everyone that can does, it is one thing to have a wish list for it, but it is a complete other to leave it to someone else to do it. Its not just technology that we need a help with, but we need people to start using their blogs, and write about their Linux pursuits (not just Linux but anything you think that members may find interesting), I'm also very proud to announce that we are going to take part in this years Software Freedom Day, as we did last year. It was a great success and with a bit more experience we should be able to really but on a show and a half. Watch this space for more details and to find ways on how you can part of the action. For people that don't know Software Freedom Day is held on the third Saturday of September and more information on the global event can be found at http://www.softwarefreedomday.org. We have also had some very good news that we may have found a sponsor to help us with merchandise to give to people who make a contribution to the Linux Society community. Its early days yet, and they will be more information to come but thanks to http://www.file-away.co.uk/ and Robert "swifty" Ladyman. Also if you want to get your Linux related story published then here's your chance. Mr Community himself aka Jono Bacon is compiling a book about peoples experience in the Linux community you can find more information here http://thelinuxsociety.org.uk/conten... As usual for a full list of what talks we have planned at the society then you can visit http://www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk/events I shall be returning back to duties on the 12th of February, geared with a talk called "A Diverse Community" As usual you can join the one going discussions and talks from within the society, by joining up to the mailing list which can be found https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/l... finux signing out | ||||

| Hi Guys, This was sent to me and Gordon D, and we we're asked to pass it on to you guys. So here you go your chance to have your story published. I'm sure there are stories we could submit like; The drunk monkey and a penguin, Linux Society, Harry Potter and The Perth Bus Station, and my personal favorite - When Geeks Collide - The Tale of Swifty's Nickname, Anyways Mr Community has been serviced again, and let us know if you do submit something Arron Subject: [lugmaster] A request for stories for Jono's book To: Lugmaters , Jono Message-ID: <1233221038.6574.15.camel at smeagol> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Mr Community is in need of various stories to add to his book about the community and the people in it. What he has asked is if I can ask you guys to post this to your various lists so people interested can add their tale of woe or joy to his site at http://www.artofcommunityonline.org/ The kinda stories he's after can be anything related to Linux and how it has impacted and changed your life as a community member. This is not generic to Ubuntu (although it helps). He is also after stuff on how the community as a whole has helped you grow and taught you things about computing and linux. Lastly he is after some ahhh factor so if as a community you've gone out into the world and made it a better place to live in, then that rocks too. P.s. Fun stories, the little tales that put a smile on your face will be gladly received Many thanks for your time and I hope to read the stories in the book -- Seek That Thy Might Knowhttp://www.davmor2.co.uk | ||||

| September the month i'll never forget, but i'll need this post to remember | 427 dni temu | |||
| September has been for the past couple of years a very busy time for me in deed. The beginning of a new academic year, the beginning of a new year at Linux Society, and all the upheaval that this brings. I say upheaval in a very passionate way, I have a pretty cool job for a Linux nut, i met lots of new fresh faces coming to university to follow their academic paths, and i watch some who have only ever seen the proprietary windows XP world discover the world of Free and Open Source Software (more Vista users this year. i also say job loosely as i don't get paid, but i do have to be available most days and dedicate some hours to it). I also have to try and cram in has much learning as i can, and this year i have a new addition to my little family coming (it's not so little now, and due in January 200 I was talking to my girlfriend the other day, and i remember saying the same thing to her as i did last year, namely that this was the busiest September that i have ever had, and i think few would disagree with that. This year not only did we get ready for what turned out to be a truly spectacular event celebrating Software Freedom Day on the 20th September, then we had to be ready for Freshers Fair 4 days later. As a society freshers fair is an incredibly important time. It's a chance to speak to massive amount of people about Linux, i suppose for us its like our own special trade fair. One thing i noticed this year was the amount of people running ubuntu that i met this year, in all i would say i spoke to more Linux Users at freshers fair then ever before, i would argue that this maybe due to the amount of sub laptops that are making their way on the market, i met quite a few ASUS EEEPC owners. It's be a long September, we (me, girlfriend and daughter) moved the day after freshers fair, and then back to classes the day after that. However i must have spoken to more people this year about free software then this time last year, and looking at the achievements that the Linux Society made last year i can only imagine that this year i'll speak to more than last year. We have a sort of weekend off this weekend, me, my girlfriend, and my daughter are going to a family wedding and we're off the reservation so to speak, we're all looking forward to it. Software Freedom Day - Dundee - 2008 was just a whole new experience for me, and for most of the people that worked on it. It's hard not to be emotional when you watched friends and people i have known for over two years, that i see every two weeks put their personal fears aside, stand up and talk to an audience mostly made up of strangers about something they love in the world of Free Software. Not only did they put their nerves into a box, they delivered talks that even to professional speakers would have seemed good. I saw a blog post after the event that i though showed our event in a good light (http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,..., and thank PeterJudge for his kind words. It was a lot of organisation and a lot of time put to getting this event of the ground, and left me some what exhausted after it all finished. I made new friends this year, and forged deeper friendships with people i already knew (some where even rewarded with new nicknames). I think in whole i'm proud of the event we held, the feedback i got was heart warming. We managed to record some of the talks and they are being published on www.hackerpublicradio.org soon, my talk entitled What is Free Software, went out the other day and can be found at http://thelinuxsociety.org.uk/conten.... I'll let the Tayside Linux User Group mailing list know as and when each one comes out, the TayLUG mailing list can be found at https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/l... - We also recorded something a little special for my friend over at www.linuxbasement.com Chad_W, should be heading out on his cast sometime soon, i'll post when its out. Of course i thank everyone that helped to make that a special day, and they all know who they are. The night of the talk ended with a lot of geeks finding the bar downstairs from the event, and drinking a large alcohol fuelled amnesia worth of beer. I have to be honest it was the best night out with the lads that i ever had, and we just laughed from start to end, i think it was a mix of, releif at getting through the event (i've order the I Survived SFD 2008 T-Shirt), the high and buzz from most of us doing a well received talk, and actually having a bunch of geeks that didn't have to explain the geeky jokes to. (What does Ubuntu stand for? Old African Word for Can't configure Debian, SQL statement walks into a bar and walks over to two tables and asks, can i join you (Thanks Scottish Developers for that one, any chance i can return it)) So i suppose what is left for me to do now is sign off, and thank everyone once again. http://thelinuxsociety.org.uk/conten... | ||||

| Linux Society May News Letter | 531 dni temu | |||
| May News Letter Hi Guys and Welcome to May's newsletter. A lot has happened in the past couple of weeks, and there is a little bit to talk about, but as usual i will try and keep it short. I would like also to take this opportunity to wish a good summer to all of our members, some of who will be travelling back to their non term time homes, and some of who will have finished their studies at Abertay and will be moving on to new things. I hope you all enjoyed your academic year, and to those moving on, good luck and you will be missed, please feel free to keep up with what's happening both via the mailing list and the web site. Well i suppose the biggest news we have to deliver is in partnership with Hannah Maclure Centre we are holding an all-day event for Software Freedom Day on the 20th September 2008. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote and celebrate free software. We have a number of ideas already however nothing has been set in stone, but the general feeling is to have a number of talks planned, a number of workshops, and a couple of discussion groups set up. We're hoping to bring a lot of groups and individuals together who are interested in how freedom in software can have positive effect on both their life's and their interests such as artists, writers, students, hobbyists, and businesses. At the moment we are canvassing ideas and thoughts for the event at http://thelinuxsociety.org.uk/conten.... I would ask everyone to have a look and add your ideas and thoughts as soon as possible. We have had some very interesting ideas on the site, and at the last meeting. I must admit i was somewhat shocked when a member mentioned at the last meeting that there where only five meetings until the event. A pencilled outline of the kind of topics we're hoping to have seems to be; * Business * Science * Home * Multimedia / Audio/visual * Schools / Education (OpenEducation Disc) * Tecchies, Linuxistas, Converts, Sysadmins, BoFHs * Community There is also the usual call for speakers, volunteers, and participants. This is an event that can truly showcase the best parts of our community and the freedom we take for granted, and a event not to be missed. We had a great run of security related talks, and a virtualization talk and i would like to thank Gordon Dunlop, and Tim Spencer for their talks in the past month or so. It is important not to forget that we have a freshers fair to prepare for and with it just being days before the Software Freedom Day it seems a great way to both get new people interested in free and open source software, as well as a dry run of some of the demo's we're hoping to hold at the SFD event. I would also like to takes the opportunity to mention the Scottish Developers meetings that are taking place on the opposite week to our meetings, i was unable to make the last meeting but the feedback i received was fantastic, to find out when the next meeting is come visit the events section of the Linux Society website. As usual there has been a run of great howto guides, articles and editorials at www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk and i would like to thank everyone that has contributed and like to encourage people to post their work on there too. Don't forget to visit the site and keep up-to-date with the events section on the site, and remember to send us your events as well. Well as promised i'll wrap up now, and hope to speak to everyone over the forth coming couple of weeks.
