History of IDC725 days ago

Irish Deaf.com (IDC) was set up in January 2003 as part of the European Year of People with Disabilities. IDC was originally a website consisting of an online directory, where listings could be found. The listings contained contact information on Deaf clubs, Deaf organisations, Deaf schools, deaf-related/deaf-friendly businesses and colleges at a national and international level.

Due to the success of this venture, a few months later, plans were reviewed and it was decided to issue a printed version of the directory. The first edition of the directory went out to print early 2004 and many copies were sold to Deaf people, Deaf clubs, shops, schools, etc. IDC visited many deaf clubs and organisations all around Ireland to promote the new directory.

In IDC’s second year, a new service was introduced on a pilot basis. This new service was a fundraising scheme. It grew in demand over time, with more people seeking work and more charities requesting our fundraising service.

The popularity continues as can be seen from our figures: during 2004, over €15,000 was paid out to charities and 50 people were involved in fundraising; during 2005, the amount increased to over €85,000 being paid out to charities. More than 40 people were involved as we were establishing a regular team with supervisors.

Charities who have benefited from our Fundraising Service include the following (this list is growing and is not exhaustive):
Greenbow
Irish Deaf Sports Association
Irish Deaf Youth Association
St Vincent’s Football Club
Irish Deaf Golf Union
Irish Deaf Women’s Group
Temple Street Hospital for Sick Children
Dublin Celts Waterpolo Club
Irish Deaf Karting Club
Irish Deaf Society
Leinster Deaf Sports Council
Munster Deaf Youth Football
National Association for Deaf People
Physically Challenged Irish and American Youth Team

IDC continued to expand during 2005, seeking other ways to continue its presence for the deaf community and to support them.

A new service was introduced with the aid of our website. We now sell Irish Sign Language books, videos, CDs, DVDs, posters and manuals. We also have merchandise for sale. Most of our sales are made via our website which has a credit card facility though we also accept sales by visits to our office.

You can visit our website or our office for further information.

Swords Web Solutions was set up before Irish Deaf.com and dealt with mainly hosting and website designing. Due to increasing workload in IDC, it was decided that IDC take over website designing and hosting. We have since established a number of clients.

A new logo was designed which you can see on the front cover. This logo represents a number of things. The I stands for Irish, D stands for Deaf, the blue C for .com. The hand represents the handshape used in Irish Sign Language. It also represents the letter C, community, charity, fundraising and funds. This logo was designed by Kris Daly, who also designed the best selected logo for Irish Deaf Youth Association and other organisations.

During IDC’s 3rd anniversary in January 2006, we moved into premises for the first time. These premises are situated in Phibsboro, which is close to many deaf organisations: Irish Deaf Society, National Association for Deaf People, Irish Deaf Youth Association, Greenbow, Irish Hard of Hearing Association, Irish Tinnitus Association, Dublin Deaf Association, Centre for Deaf Studies, 191st Dublin Deaf Scouts, Dublin Celts Waterpolo and more.

Further developments have taken place with Irish Sign Language classes being held on our premises. We also have courses provided by other organisations on our premises.

We organise International Social Evening in association with National Association for Deaf People where our foreign deaf people all over Ireland meet up.

We have an internet café open and provide refreshments. A pool table is available for use.

We would like our office to be used by members of the deaf community for whatever purpose such as meetings, social, internet, classes, use as an office, etc. To hire our rooms, please contact us.

These offices aim to make IDC more friendly and accessible to the Deaf community and to support and strengthen the community, especially as we deal with a lot of non-national deaf people who have difficulty seeking work and do not often mix with the Irish deaf community.

The Future?
While IDC continues its successful fundraising service and sales and other
opportunities, there is room for other possibilities in the future. As we have plenty of space in our office, our rooms can be hired out. We would also welcome deaf organisations to use our premises.
