| Darwin has gone the way of the Dodo! Darwin started as a fun experiment but unfortunately never moved much beyond that, partly because I was unable to invest enough time in it, and may be because it just wasn't quite right. The plan was to keep it going as long as there was good support for it, but it seemed to wane as it grew. I still have a lot of new ideas for it to make it a lot better, but they rely on other things being added to Bebo first, so unlike the Dodo, it may make a comeback at a later date! Thanks to everyone who supported it and sorry for the unceremonious demise of it. We still love you! Michael Full blog from David O'Keeffe, tomorrow. | ||||

| We're getting to the end of our report for Bebo, and we just need a small bit of help. For this, we ask you, contestants. If you an spare a few minutes for Darwin, and for Bebo, in exchange for an improved game and public acknowledgement, then please help us. In our report, we are highlighting some findings regarding Darwin and the Bebo platform for it, along with accessibility, ease of use, quality and public awareness. We would request that we could have a number of representatives, as many a possible, but ideally one or two from the following locations: - Ireland - England - Wales - Scotland - America (various locations please) - New Zealand - Canada Your work, which is not very tough, would include asking some people in your nearest city some questions about Bebo and Darwin. It is not a long detailed survey (we're not interested in that), it's literally two brief questions. The most it would take in total is about 20 minutes, at most. Plus, if more people get involved from your territory, the faster you an get it done. You can get your friends involved too, and we'd appreciate that. For those who are interested, please contact me regarding it, and I will forward you via email the relevant leaflets and material. We really ask that you help with this, as it would be of major benefit to everyone involved with Bebo. Please email me privately, or drop me a comment, and I will sort you out with all the necessary material. I really appreciate this, and thank you for taking the time to read the blog. Ends. | Voting Problems | 646 dni temu | |||
| Right, we get it, there are some problems with voting, but, erm, we don't know what to say. Normally I'd have a smart arse answer right about now about Bebo, or I'd have gone down the road of making a sarcastic joke about my approach to the crisis, but today, for once, I've not got much to say. Yes, at time of writing, many might not be aware of what major things have happened at Bebo HQ. Well, today, AOL Time Warner bought Bebo for $850 Million, which is about £417 Million/€546 Million. And sure, if you were making big deals like this, I doubt Darwin will resume working tonight. Again, I don't know. I'm just guessing that staff won't be rushing back to their offices in Texas, San Fran or even in London to update our databases and shoot out emails. If you look at it logically, Darwin probably wasn't even considered when the week started, so this really isn't a big surprise. Who knows, the team may do something extraordinary tonight for us in relation to Darwin, or they could just leave us until tomorrow night. I'm just not sure. If you've got some stroke of genius idea/brainwave, do share it. I won't go into talking about the future of Darwin or the fixing of things right now, because we'll need to look at what may change or be done thanks to this takeover. If you're interested in reading more about it, take a look at the press release http://www.bebo.com/Press.jsp?PressP... Anyway, that's my bit of Bebo gossip, but for now, why not try this- it won't fix Darwin voting, but sure, it will give you a laugh... http://www.bebo.com/c/apps/add?AppId... Ends. | Let's fix it so... | 659 dni temu | |||
| We get it, you're starting to get annoyed with Darwin. You aren't having fun and some even call it pointless. Right, so here's your chance to fix it all. Tell us what you want. We've been here since the start, and we know how irritating it can be at times, but recently we've seen people not bothering any more, and people leaving mid-week. We want to change all this. I am personally going to deliver a report to the staff regarding Darwin, and what you contestants want to experience, enjoy and see developed/redeveloped. This is really your chance to make Darwin good, once and for all, and make it something really worth continuing to operate now and into the future. If you are interested in having your say, please email me. I've gone to the lengths of including my private email address, so I do ask that you make the effort to get involved and active. If you choose not to participate, you really have no right to complain about Darwin, because you haven't tried to make a difference. If you are replying, please include detailed accounts of what you are talking about, with examples where necessary. Screenshots or images are helpful, if required. Please do convey yourself with some degree of professionalism- we're going to make this of a high standard, to show that we've taken the time to make a difference, so please do try your best to use proper language and give good reasons in your difficulties. So, I would ask that you get in contact. I am accepting emails, so try not to use comments unless absolutely necessary. Please DO NOT post comments with ideas on this blog, please email. Also, please try to adapt and explain your reasons, rather than a quick message like "get rid of the age restriction" etc. I look forward to hearing your views. darwin@invasionireland.com David O'Keeffe - Founder, Moderator and Contestant, The Darwin Contestants Syndicate. | ||||

| And we're back... | 676 dni temu | |||
| Well, we were never really gone. I've been in Kolkata (Calcutta), India working with poor and the sick and dying for the past while, so I blame the interactivity in Darwin because of my absence. Hmmm... Modest, eh? Only messing, it's glad to be back. And, with my return, I am posing some new questions for you mighty fine creatures of intellect and wisdom; of comment and opinion. Firstly, as you can see, there's been a lot of talk (and anger) recently after all the under-18's have been deleted, along with those who were in breach of Darwin rules. A group has even been set-up by some deleted contestants who are showing their upset at this move. People were mentioning from day one at the number of minors using the Darwin service, in breach of rule number one, and praised the enforcing of the rules, however, now many are saying that Darwin has become too quiet without them. Because of this, I've created a poll, which asks you view. Are you glad to see the under 18's deleted? Yes or No. It's a simple question really, but it will spark a lot of mixed opinions, across the board. And because of the amount of detailed views we expect, we have opened a thread in the forum. Here you can share your opinion about the change. I will recommend to any minors who are posting that you represent yourselves well. If you stoop to using foul language or not explaining your views matures, for example saying something like "it's sh*t dat u've done dis, and u've messed it up you gobsh1tes", you are only highlighting that you cannot hold a logical, and adult debate and communication, which defeats the purpose of Darwin. Basically, just air your option maturely in the forum. This group, as we always say, is accessed constantly by staff, and changes and modifications are made because of users input, so do get involved. As for other changes, we've seen a dramatic drop in numbers in groups, because of the contestant removal. These spaces shall more than liked be filled dramatically, and level 11 shall arrive soon. Shouldn't it? Slán! David O'Keeffe - Founder, Moderator and Contestant, The Darwin Contestants Syndicate | ||||

| Yes, you had problems the first few days of last week with voting, but sure it all turned out okay, didn't it. I've been receiving emails, comments and text messages from players who all say that they liked the delay in the voting, mostly because it gave them a good chance to talk and interact with other contestants, rather than frantically casting votes on first few days. I was caught up by the delay also, and I personally liked that we all had a chance to talk and chat. I noticed, as with the syndicate, that people did not all interact on the first and second day, like usual, but kept a large deal of activity between groups and contestants throughout the week. I believe this enabled people to decide on their votes better and eliminate who are not suitable enough candidates to receive them. I am starting to think that maybe it's best to have a delay before we can vote. Imagine if we could have a few days to really get to know people, and create challenges, before having to cast our votes. Yeah, sure this was a simple mistake by Bebo HQ this week, but in the end, it turned out to be very beneficial. I'd love to hear your view, so please do vote in the new dedicated poll and in the forum. Please explain your answers and be fair and honest in your decisions. Sadly, one thing I have been noticing over the past few days is the return of "Votes for Votes". Contestants are beginning to return to their old ways of seeking votes from similar players. Many users are now posing the question- is it even worth it for these people if they are in Darwin. The game is all about interaction, and the votes are to nominate the people you like once they do your challenge. "Votes for Votes" can hardly be categorised as a challenge. Are we being too lenient on this issue, or are "Votes for Votes" really not that bad? Before people start shouting and arguing, you should check out some of the old comments and votes. Very unusual how trends go on Bebo... Also, we can all enjoy some brand new groups. It's great to see the random names and titles returning. For example "An App A Day" and "Jaw Not War". Hmmm... You can picture Bebo sitting around in a board room discussing these names. And whilst I mention it, our competition to invent names has not been forgotten; I'm passing the names onto the appropriate employees over the coming days, so we will hopefully have some new groups with the names next week. Fingers crossed! As for now, I'm off to write a challenge for my group. It should test them to the limits of creativity. Hee Hee, I'm such a tease! Ends. Okay everybody, let's all take a deep breath and calm down for a minute. Yes, you cannot vote at the moment, and we know this is a problem, but it's not the end of the world, is it? Hell No. The Syndicate is being flooded with emails and comments about the system not allowing the casting of votes. We understand that this is a problem to the enjoyment of the game, but perhaps you could make the most of this time. It's not like things like this happen everyday! Since the switchover of the groups on Thursday last, contestants have been unable to access their personalised voting pages, which is frustrating and irritatating to say the least. During this time, I personally have been able to get to know those in my group that bit better. I think it's the lack of pressure to cast votes and engage in the prioritised challenges that has delivered me some space to chat and interact. Surely thats what Darwin is about? I can't stress enough that we appreciate your comments and posts regarding the difficulties, and all the messages you leave no doubt help the developers of Darwin to calculate the faults, but we must confirm time and time (and time, and time) again that we are not in Bebo. We cannot access the voting system, along with your accounts, so we therefore cannot fix these problems. We'll have to wait for them to be fixed for us in San Francisco! For now, interact, or just do whatever you used to do before Darwin! David O'Keeffe - Founder, Moderator and Contestant, Darwin Contestants Syndicate. | ||||

| We've reached a milestone! - Votes For Votes, Goodbye! | 713 dni temu | |||
Yes, you've read it correctly, votes for votes are to be abolished. I was contacted this morning and can now publicly confirm that Bebo are to introduce a system which will stop this activity. The staff in Bebo will be launching a "vote capping system" next week which will eliminate the "Votes for Votes" issues. This should be effective and live from Monday night. These changes show that Bebo are truly listening to us. They may not be actively posting content everyday, but they are fixing things and cleaning up problems like this one. Thanks to their hard efforts, we've now reached a milestone with Darwin which will enable the game to develop and evolve further. Because of this, I think it's only right that we thank Michael and all the Bebo team for their efforts. It is superb that it is being implemented. If you've something nice to say to the team, please add a comment to this blog. Darwin Contestants, Congratulations. Bebo Staff, Thank You! | Whoa, I have so much to say... | 715 dni temu | |||
| You know what, I think you people are making chaos so that the blogs become much harder for me to write. Clearly, from all the developments this week, I've loads to talk about. Groan. Here we go, regardless. Now, without even reading this, you will be aware of the current anger and frustration circulating the Darwin groups in relation to the voting patterns. Confused, let me explain it in simple English: Votes for Votes. Yes, I know, it's a pathetic way to play. Personally, I get very irritated by it. I don't mind some people giving one or two votes because you like someones attitude toward the game etc, but the main issue is when people are inactive for days then suddenly pair up with another contestant and swap votes to stay in. Crooked, mean and so immature! So, to combat this problem, Darwin Syndicate's lovely members have started a campaign to stop this happening. It would mean restricting votes and allowing only a certain amount per contestant. We fully approve and recommend this idea, and we are very much promoting this issue. We know that we can put an end to this dirty game-play. I feel personally that we should halt Darwin for a few days/weeks until we can iron out all these bugs and difficulties. Anyone agree? It will be interesting to see what the outcome is. I want to say though, lets not be down on Michael (Birch) or any other Bebo staff. They are our friends, and only they can make changes dramatically to the system. So, please lets not give out about them. Yes, lets have constructive criticism, but lets not demean the group! Another thing this week were problems with casting votes and comments. I think most users ran into difficulties like this over the past few days. I know personally I was having issues with replying to challenges. Sometimes I was greeted by a message saying "Unknown Profile Type". It's utterly irrelevant I know, but a problem all the same. The other things that contestants faced were not being actually able to vote- possibly caused by moderating "blocking". This is basically when the moderator of a Darwin group blocks your activity, similar to what you can do on your own profile. I think this is a simple issue that can be easily fixed. My thoughts are that Bebo just haven't configured the moderating privileges correctly. Now, to make this work out, I ask you to post your "blocked" activity in the Darwin Contestants Syndicate forum under the specific thread. Simply include the current moderator name, the time the problems occur and note what you cannot/can do. We'll quickly be able to see who is doing what, and hopefully why. I truly thing this group is quickly becoming like our friends at "Bebo Moans and Groans"! We're always giving out, but never praising. A serious issue arose this week, which was absolutely uncalled for. Basically, a contestant was left with offensive messages of a disturbing and paedophilic nature. This was done by means of "fake profiles". It is saddening to see this sort of behaviour on Darwin, as it was once fun and enjoyable, but now is is swiftly becoming filled with childish behaviour and snide activity. I find it hard to comprehend why anyone would act like this. The thing I have been informed about is that the comments were believed to come from an adult. You could believe it being posted by one of the eleven year olds who have joined, but not an adult. Thankfully, this behaviour has stopped, and we haven't received reports today about this activity. I really think we should stop this, and the nasty behaviour online. Many of the culprits said that they did it because "someone in their group/in the syndicate deleted their profile". This is absolutely incorrect- nobody within Darwin can access your account or profile. Nobody in the Syndicate can access your page. And nobody can report your profile with ease. Bebo are not fools- they don't just delete without investigation. For example, if 500 people all reported you for abuse, but Bebo did not find anything, you won't be deleted. It's not how many reports they receive, it's about what you post. Read the Bebo Terms and Conditions, all material is logged and can be accessed accordingly by the staff. Because of this, don't be nasty with profiles, please. Phew! Now that all the bad news is out of the way, I wish to congratulate all of those who successfully moved up a level today. You should give yourself a nice round of applause and a hug. And for those who didn't move up, don't worry- you can ease the pain. Just whip out your dressing gown, your fluffy slippers, head down to the kitchen and grab a tub of ice-cream and watch Dirty Dancing. It probably won't make you feel any better, but it will take your mind off of it! And finally, I wish to add publicly into the blog a message about our moderator and co-founder, Daniel Purcell. Daniel left a number of days ago now because he was enduring a lot of hassle about his activity in Darwin; he too was receiving abusive comments and finding it a struggle to remain active without running into trouble. I want to say that I feel it was terrible to see him go. The reason I did not comment on it sooner is because I wanted to see the reactions from fellow contestants, and to see if he would join- I know he said he wouldn't return, but I felt that under persuasion, he may. Daniel was a truly excellent player of the game and a very enjoyable person to work with. Even in times of crisis, he kept his head high and gave things his best shot. I am glad he was co-founder of the Syndicate as it would not have developed to its current state without his input. Daniel- Thank you. Of course, I must thank Melanie and Melissa too- their work has too been invaluable. Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention that we are on Wikipedia! Check out the Darwin entry on the Bebo page. Waahey! We're famous. Anyway, that's my blog for the moment. I will now go and sleep; catch up on all the sleep I've missed this week. Friday tomorrow. Oh yes. Ends.
