| ENZED/Dewtec Superstock Teams Champs 2008-2009 Season | hace 291 días | |||
| Well it was that time of year again, time for the Superstock Teams Champs! Friday night held some intersting team tactics, some amazing hits and some awesome racing! Here is how Friday nights racing set up Saturday nights'. Only two cars finished, and they were from the same team. There were three rollovers during this race, 2 rollovers going to 15v Dion Mooney (one which he continued racing after, it was the second one who baked him) and one rollover going to 72c Campbell McManaway after a blocking attempt went sour. Finishing Places: 1: 17v Steve Guilford :2: 16v Kerry Podjursky Minor Semifinal 2: Hawkes Bay Hawkeyes (20) vs Great Britain Lions (165) Hawkes Bay failed to deliver their usual standard on Saturday night, as a few of their cars had trouble starting, and those that did start couldn't sustain powere for the race. This left them weakened against a full strength Lions side. As a direct result, the international visitors put the Hawkes Bay boys to shame with a 1-2-3 clean sweep finish. Finishing Places: 1: 03gb Stu Smith Jnr :2: 01gb Frankie Wainman Jnr :3: 04gb Mark Taylor Semifinal 1: Rotorua Rebels (35) vs Nelson Tigers (160) Dangerman 85n Dale Ewers had the sneaking suspicion that he was going to be the target for this semi and he was not wrong. The southern boys used their heads and switched to plan B, which involved 83n Brett Nicholls becoming the runner. Their efforts were rewarded, and Nicholls raced to the flag with Ewers and 81n Brendon Higgins successful in their roles as blockmen. This gave the Tigers their first title shot since 2006. Semifinal 2: Palmerston North Panthers (150) vs Stratford Scrappers (45) Of the 5 Panthers that raced on friday night, only four fronted for saturday night. Peter Rees was the absentee, with engine damage that required fixing all through the night on Friday night. Miers became the runner for the semi, with Bengston, Penn and Hemi playing at blocking. The Scrappers proved to be nothing but a speed bump on the way to the finals, with Palmerston North taking a 1-2 win over the highest Stratford car, 8s. Runoffs for 5th and 6th Wanganui vs Rotorua Placings: 38r, 35r, 14v Wanganui 6th Overall Rotorua 5th Overall for 3rd and 4th Great Britain vs Stratford Placings: 03gb, 686s, 02gb Stratford 4th Overall Great Britain 3rd Overall Final Palmerston North Panthers vs Nelson Tigers This proved to be an interesting battle, with more than just the title on the line. The Tigers (still smarting from a loss on their home track) were out for revenge. The injured Wayne Hemi did not feature in the final, and as Peter Rees' car was not up to standard before the final race, he took Hemi's place in the red Waka. However, it was not meant to be as the Waka came to a halt on the infield with engine damage. Shane Penn took running control of the race, with Bengston playing blocker for him. The Tigers came to realise who the runner was too late, and despite Dale Ewers' efforts, the Panthers easily sailed to victory. Final Placings: 9p Shane Penn, 85n Dale Ewers, 83n Brett Nicholls, 84n Shane Harwood, 8p Scott Miers. And so that conculdes the 2008/2009 Teams Champs for this year. Hope to see you all here again next year to see whether or not the Panthers can hold on for that extra year. Until next time, drive hard, drive safe. Mel | ||||

| NZ Champs - Wellington 23/24th January 2009 - A driver's perspective. | hace 308 días | |||
| Entry Made By 17p Driver Shane Simpson Hay people Im just back at work from 3 nights of racing and a few drama's. 1st night was good with Craig picking up a win in his 1st race which put the pressure on me as i couldnt let him get a win and me not. So i went hard and come out on top and showed my speed on the feild. The 2nd race went good well aswell, i started mid pack and after a pile up I was inbehind 11w grey, I followed him around and picked up really good points for the final heat. In the 3rd heat i got off to a good start and cruised around with 14m following me, I got good hit on me buy 78b? which sent me up and around the wall, as i came off I reverse spun him into the wall and I was happy that he was still parked there the next lap. I knew I just had to finish and followed peter barry around for 3 or 4 laps with 14m following me. So after 3 hard fast heats and 1 walling I was into the top 30 for saturday night, and i was looking forward to it, It was a downer though with Craig, he would have qualified if his clutch didnt fuck out and he had no clutch all night. He only missed out by 2 points and he lost 1/2 lap on every redlight. Heat 1 nz's I got off to a bad start being out wide in the shit and it took me a lap to get into the inside and about 6 cars had passed me, Being down low I was much faster then most and after about 7 laps i had caught back up to 89w /2nz, we where in lapping traffic and 34r slowed a lot more then i thought and i just tagged him wich spun him in the middle of the corner, i went around him but had lost a couple of places, and just as I caught back up to them the race was over. Heat 2 I again got off to a great start and was up into the top 5 only half a lap into the race, I was behind 11w Darren Gray and we were quickly catching the leading cars when 35a spun out and we just came together which spun me out and I got collected by a couple of people including Rees, I then went into block mode and was looking for Welly cars, I put 67w into the wall and held him there for a lap or so, after i got going again Rees and 89w Dale Robertson went passed, so I went after Dale remembering he took me out last year in Stratford. I csught up to him and tried taking him off the end 3 times but the last 20m I was on reving her out which slowed me down just enough for me to slap him but didnt have the momentum to take him to the wall, it wasnt through lack of trying though. He finally got away when as I went to him him I put a wheel across the pole line and pulled out of the hit as racing is done on the track and not on the grass. Heat 3 I was starting behind Dale and was planning to take him out, but in the 1st corner myself and David Marshal 54w got tangled and I had lost my chance, it took me a while to get going again as my car just wouldnt fire into life. I got going and was cruising the poleline, I really enjoyed cruising around waiting watching the cars who didnt know who i was going to pull out on, After Rees went past I gassed it to see who was behind him but my car then died and 46v Allan Levine just managed to hit me going in full speed which spun me out and again and I was dead half on the track half on the poleline, after a lap or 2 it fired back up and just as I was rejoining the track the red lights came on. I was once agian cruzing the pole line and got taken to the infield by 11w grey, as i rejoind the track iI saw 2 blue cars coming and took the 1st one 91w Kyle Lane to the infield where my car died again after trying to crash start it I had to luck and clutched and hit the starter, just as I was about to stop it went and I went back out on track, halfway down the straight and it fucked out agian and I tried 5 times to start it but no luck even when tried crash starting it on the tractor it wouldnt go, I get into the pits and Terry presses the go go button and it fires up straight away and looks at me like "whats the problem". So we load it up and I was gutted, I went out there to take out Dale but didnt and he got himself 2nz with a fantastic drive. Lets hope next year it will be the other way around and I will have the NZ on my car and he would have missed out on getting me. | ||||

| Manawatu Sprintcar Championships 08/09 Season | hace 316 días | |||
| Well guys Im back with a brand new update for you, sorry about the delay in correspondence... Kinda got a bit mullocked at Wellington for New Years so my memory for the Stockcar Teams is a bit fuzzy. However, I do recall that it was a Palmerston North vs Wellington final... and Palmy were sadly not the victorious team. Well done to the Young Guns, four years running! And so to the Manawatu Sprintcar Champs! What a night! 18 Sprintcars fronted for the championship, and the supporting classes were Superstocks (whichever ones WEREN'T in Rotorua), Stockcars, Adult Ministocks and Sidecars. Superstocks: A grand total of 6 Superstocks fronted, and so stockcar drivers were given the option to join in at the back of the field for a race. A few stockcar drivers did, including 51p Jamie Southee and 97p Graeme Ward. Visiting cars 96b Murray Long and 77w Jordan Keene were also among the field, with Long scraping up a win with only some competition on the track. Stockcars: A regular number of cars appeared for this class, and racing was intense. 17p Shane Simpson and 18p Craig Healey proved to be dominant in the races, with 97p Graeme Ward sneaking around the track taking places left right and centre. 31p Gary Davis had a fair night too, but playing cat and mouse with Shane Simpson hindered his chances of clinching two wins for the night. In the Superstock/ Stockcar all in... it proved an interesting race with the visiting superstocks taking the 1st and 2nd positions for the start of the race. Sadly for our only Welly visitor, it was not to be as he was nudged out of first by home cars but finished a respectable place nonetheless. 18p Craig Healey was the victor of the stockcar class, sharing the victory lap with Murray Long. Adult Ministocks: This class is meant to generally be non-contact but that doesn't stop a little bit of tapping and nudging going on. 33p Justin Farrington, 9p Brett Whiting and 68p Mark Bayliss were the victorious on the night, with each driver clinching a top place. Sprintcars: Well this was the crowd-pleasing event of the night, and the boys didn't fail to deliver. There was excitement on and off the track, with a few cars ending up parked on the infield by the end of the night. Heat one saw 21v Peter Huijs racing with his nephew, Brent Huijs in the 12v sprintcar. The night ended badly for Brent, who flew wide on turn one and came to a crashing halt midway through turn 2. The car was rather munted, and so as a result that put Brent out for the night. Another casualty was 4p Bryan Menefy, whose car was having problems throughout the night. He didn't race the first heat, but that didn't faze him as he came out for the 3rd heat. 1NZ Carl Wilson tried his hand at the championship, but sadly couldn't get his hands on the silverware as he was stuck behind 66m Skinny Colson for the duration of the feature. 10USA racer Ricky Logan and 11p racer Ian "JackJack" Easton failed to finish the night in their cars as they both learnt the art of spinning, as opposed to driving the straight line. 22v Donny Hopkinson finally made it back to the track, flashing around a lime-green car. He put it through its paces, but again couldn't capitalise as he also flew wide and lost placing. The final standings for the night were: 1st: 35a Hans Boere 2nd: 18a Greg Pickerill 3rd: 66m Graeme "Skinny" Colson 4th: 1NZ Carl Wilson 5th: 6p Nelson Hartley 6th: 57m Ricky Logan The fastest recorded laps for the night: Superstock: 9p Brett Hislop 18.40 Stockcar: 18p Craig Healey 19.41 Adult Ministock: 102p Dion Parkes 20.31 Sprintcar: 18a Greg Pickerill 13.66 Thats everything that happened at the Palmerston North Track for the Sprintcar Championships. Check Back Next meeting for results of the 248 Superstock Global Challenge. Until then, race hard, race safe. Melza | ||||

| Placemakers Superstock Shootout - Caravan Derby 15th November 2008 | hace 379 días | |||
Ok I completely apologise for not updating last week... however to be fair... everything was a new experience in Welly for me Anyway.. onto last night for those who couldn't make it in. last night saw the first round of the Superstock Shootout and approximately 21 cars fronted for the first round... with Malcolm Ngatai coming up from Chch to race. Joe Faram made his way down to Palmy from Gisborne... so it was an interesting mix. As supporting classes for the night... Stockcars, Sprintcars, Youth and Adult Minstocks were also racing. So now, broken down into class! Stockcars: Last night was a great night for introducing two racers to the track, and they both got their 'Welcome To The Class' races. Jamie Southee (51p) and Craig Healey (18p) both came into the arena guns blazing... so much so that Jamie put his right side front suspension out with a shunt along grandstand straight and into turn three wall... and Craig managed to nab an impressive win in the second race. 17p Shane Simpson was racing well in the night... with a feature win racked up just ahead of Craig on the last lap. the car of Peter Rees made it onto the track.. but much to the surprise of a lot of people it was neither Peter Rees nor Brent Boddy in the car... it was Gavin Taniwha! He raced well during the night... until a minor altercation with Shane on turns three and four took its toll on the car resulting in a spin out between turns one and two. Youth Ministocks: Big action in this group last night... with Christian Hermansen having organised a Youth Ministocks Series. Many cars fronted for the night... and many thrills along the way. 118p Luke Healey suffered a minor altercation with a car on Grandstand Straight and as a result stood infield for the race. Even some visiting cars made it to the track, from the Bay and from Wanganui... but 82 Jamie Larsen proved too quick for them, quickly racking up the first heat win and the feature race win. Adult Ministocks: Thrills and Spills galore for this class tonight... with more visitors fronting up for this group. 33p Justin Farrington had a great racing night, nabbing a 4th place in the first heat and a 1st for the second heat and a third in the feature. Other consistent finishers for the night were 9p Brett Whiting and 98p Duncan Small. Sprintcars: A few more sprints made it to the track for the night with 22a Dean Brindle making the trip from Auckland to race. His night ended badly, after it came to be that he was relegated to second from first after skipping up on the start. 11p Ian Easton and 28p Chris Uhlenberg were the other strong racers for the night in the class. 6p Nelson Hartley has managed to tame that beast of his and he was pulling in some tidy times during the first race of the night... keeping up with Chris Uhlenberg for 90% of the first race. Nick Pedley's night came to a crashing halt as he ended up on his side in turn two. Superstocks: The feature for the night, and perhaps the reason for a mega size crowd, was the Superstock Shootout. It was hard to call a lot of races for the night... but it wasn't without mishaps left right and center. The Tarrant brothers put themselves in a precarious position on the home straight, with David sitting on the front end of Herb's car. 7p Shane Penn proved to be the man to beat from the first race, taking the flag for the race.. The second heat went to 77p Wayne Norris and the final heat going to 5p Bruce Ward. There was supposed to be a run-off for third between 19c Malcolm Ngatai and 94p Roydon Collingwood at the conclusion of the last Adult Ministock race however Roydon manfully and very graciously conceded to Malcolm. So the final standings were: 1st: Shane Penn 2nd: Wayne Norris 3rd: Malcolm Ngatai The next round of the Placemakers Superstock Shootout is to be held on the 31st of January at the Stratford Track. Anyway, thats about all I can think about that happened last night.. I think our boys need to stir it up a bit... so far I've only seen one maybe two barrier poles get replaced.......... normally by this time theres about 7 or 8 poles that have been changed haha! And so this is the conclusion.. till next week, where an update comes from Palmy again... Keep Revvin', Keep readin Mel

| Robin Pratt Memorial 08/09 - 2nd November 2008 | hace 393 días | |||
| Well what a night we had... with Saturday having been cancelled due to the weather.. and so it became Sunday night racing instead. The change in day was no dampener on spirits, however it was a dampener on classes racing... with only four classes running tonight; Superstocks, Stockcars, Sprintcars and Adult Ministocks. There was excitement all around with all classes tonight.. with rivalries being attacked and new rivalries being formed. Or so it would have seemed to an outsider looking in.. Stockcar drivers were out and about tonight in the hopes of securing another prestigious title for their trophy cabinet. Right from the off with a win in the first heat, Peter Rees appeared to be the dominating force. Shane Simpson was also a strong contender... collecting a 1st in the 2nd heat of the night... Other point scorers were Roydon Collingwood and Gary Davis, both of which were silently sneaking up the ladder by collecting those just-as-valuable points for 3rd, 4th, etc... No runoffs were required tonight, as after the third heat the point tally was clear. Shane Simpson was knocked out of the running by a combination of factors.. one of the major ones being Scooter (sneaking up over his front end I think) and causing Shane to hit the wall and damage his front end. Peter was nigh untouchable; Scooters' attempts at sabotage on the track failed miserably when Scooter was running on only 3 tyres instead of 4. In the end.. the final placings were: 1st : Peter Rees 2nd: Roydon Collingwood 3rd: Gary Davis Well Done to all competitors.. The Superstock class had a few drivers return to the Palmerston North track, with some out of town driers fronting up for the occasion. 77w Jordan Keene made the trip back up to us.. but sadly only fronted for one race... not entirely sure what happened but no doubt I will find out! Tonight also saw the return of a few favourites in the class...... with Wayne 'Chucky' Norris making a debut in his brand spanking new Gold car for the night.. and he was racing well in it. Sprintcars, always a crowd favourite, only consisted of a small field tonight.. 6 cars total. It wasn't without drama, as during the feature 21v Peter Huijs and 11p Ian 'JackJack' Easton managed to become a united team, only not by choice. Im not entirely sure how they managed to get tangled in the first place... but it came to be that Easton was entwined with Huijs' back end.. and were connected for 2/3 of a lap. A yellow light brought them to a halt, and several men later they were disconnected. Racing continued, with 28p Chris Uhlenberg taking the chequered flag, with 8p Paul Donovan coming second and 57m Aaron McConachy third. Adult Ministocks were back in full force tonight... and there were even some extra thrills included for some of the drivers. Some drivers took the opportunity to appreciate the full strength of their cars while others took a chance on a free flying lesson... courtesy of Grandstand Straight. An extra race was added to the programme tonight for this group as time was needed to be killed to get the fireworks going off in the dark.. and so as a result 33p Justin Farrington won the extra race and took the extra points. The demo derby that was on tonight was the debuting derby for the season... and to be completely honest.. it was very sedate. A few more fires than one would generally expect but all were extinguished before the end of the feature. The fireworks then hit the skies with a bang... the conclusion of which signalled the end of the night. Many thanks to the Lions Club for the fireworks display. Well thats pretty much all I can recall at the present moment... any more comes to mind and I'll add it later Congrats again to all winners... commiserations to everyone else Check back next week for a Welly update... as thats where I am travelling to for Speedway next Saturday night. Until then... Drive Safe, Mel | ||||

Well this makes the second soggy day for speedway that Palmerston North has had this season... and so the Robin Pratt Memorial for the 08/09 season has yet to be re-scheduled in the Palmerston North Calendar. Big apologies to all those that had made plans to witness the carnage that there should have been... and we hope to see you there for the next weeks racing!

| Opening Night 18th October 2008 | hace 407 días | |||
| Well hey there everyone! Welcome back to Speedway for another season. Well it was an -eventful?- night, with the weather threatening to drop the rain bomb on us.... and many different debuts of cars and colours. The track was in relatively good nick, until the second stockcar race when the dip in the middle of turn three became more of an extended rut than a dip. Sidecar races were not continued until the feature due to the damage. However. The night was not without trouble, with stirring happening straight from the off. It seems that everyone was out to hit on Saturday. Scooter was back to his old tricks, just in a new car... no prizes for guessing who he was mainlining as a target.. There were a few new faces and names in the superstock class... with Jordan Keene making his debut in the class.. he did really well as well.. Shane Penn was the dominant force for the night... winning all three races... but nearly having it snatched away by the British import Stu Smith. The ministocks weren't without controversy.. with a couple of bangs and crashes coming through.. Chevron Taniwha had the feature victory wrapped up, until Duncan Small snuck through and stole it. In the youth class... a visitng stratford car decided to make a jump out of the rut at turn three and ended up doing a complete roll-over. He was unharmed, so that was a bonus. The sprintcars made it to the track, bringing with it the usual windy dust - or is it dusty wind?- and the usual nail biting turns and near-misses that everyone associates with them. A fair number made it to the track, regulars Peter Huijs, Bryan Menefy and Paul Donovan all brought their cars to the track. Only the lonely female - Kerri-Anne James - also made it to the track.. and did pretty well in the grade. Anyways... thats only the vaguest of recollections.. will update this further when I have had a chance to re-cuperate Bring it on next weekend! Mel | ||||

| Finals Night 2007/2008 Season! | hace 573 días | |||
| Well everyone, here's the last racing update for this season. And whatt a hummer the last night was For all the right reasons of course.There was a little bit of everything to be shown on Saturday, with SuperSaloons, Sprintcars, Superstocks, Stockcars, Youth and Adult Ministocks and Solos all fronting on the night. It was also the debut of the 'King Of The Arena' (K.O.T.A)competition. This was premiered over all classes, with the highest point scorer on the night being crowned 'King'. And so to SuperSaloons: Some amazing racing took place in this class on Saturday... with the inclusion of the Shootout as well as the K.O.T.A. A field of 9 fronted for racing, with a car entered from Gisborne and a car entered from Nelson, belonging to Manawatu SuperSaloon champ Paddy North. There was a bit of tension between Halcrow and North, with Halcrow coming out worst off after a tangle with North on turn 4. At the end of the night, Gregory was crowned K.O.T.A. for SuperSaloons. Superstocks: 26 of the big boys fronted for the last night, and it wasn't without thrills and spills either. Garry Trotters' car ended up being the hot point of the night, as after a tangle with a Bay car and a rollover on grandstand straight, fire erupted in the front end of the car, causing a very quick escape for both drivers. Luckily neither were hurt, so a fair ending for all. After all the racing was completed, Collingwood was named as victor overall and given the K.O.T.A title for Supers, with Wayne Hemi 2nd and Wayne Norris 3rd. Stockcars: 21 cars decided to race on saturday, witha mixed bag of locations showing up. Locals were busy teaching the visitors that this was their track, meanwhile other locals were otherwise tied up with accidental injuries, probably the worst being a shot to the crown jewels from a gearstick. The points on the night were equal at the end, with a run-off being necessary to declare a winner. Brett Lloyd and Peter Rees fronted up to the line for the run-off, but Brett soon fell off the pace as Pete put his teams experience to practice and ran to the flag. He was the winner of the night and so earned that K.O.T.A title. Ministocks: To sum these two groups up, there were some serious rolls, and flights happening in both classes, with no-one spared. some brilliant racing by some drivers leaves nothing to the imagination that they are all gonna be dangerous individuals behind the big boys. Solos: Some amazing wheel stands along grandstand straight left the crowd 'oohing' and 'aahing' in amazement. not an easy feat on a track as uneven as this im sure but a great one nonetheless. Well done to all those who entered. And, last but not least, Sprintcars: Right from the get-go on the night, it was clearly outlined that Skinny Colson was the man to watch out for, and dangerous he was the whole night. He completely dominated the feature race, but it wasn't all plain sailing for him as he had local hope Peter Huijs nipping at his heels the whole way. but, it was sadly not meant to be for Peter as Colson raced away up into the field, passing lap traffic constantly for a commanding lead. In the end, Colson was named K.O.T.A, with Peter Huijs second. Anyway.. thats my whole vague recollection for the night.. Not too sure what im gonna keep updates on for the next 6-odd months but if i hear any news between now and then i will be sure to post it.. And so it is sad now that i have to say goodbye to the season... but it is great that i can say "BRING IT ON" for the next. Have a great off season!!! (Not likely though) Mel | ||||
