YES, it's spring! Earlier in September Hannah, Sarah, Matt and I took trip to the Botanic Gardens (but didn't find any ducklings) and played some soccer in the sunshine. Another Sunday we did some positive "graffiti" along Highgate, using chalk to spread some love in our neighbourhood.
On the 21st of September Catherine came and helped us learn to cook a healthy and delicious meal. We made fresh spinach salad with balsamic dressing, roast vegetables, pan-fried chicken, and had my apple crumble for dessert. It was really awesome for all of us to sit down to our dinner together in the lounge. Thanks Cat for your excellent menu!
Samstock Festival was held on September 26th to 28th at the Mosgiel A&P Showgrounds. Sam, Hannah and Nick and I went, and stayed with Flagstaff Youth Group (Anna was with her mates from Leith Valley, and busy being an organiser/performer). Sam was really busy helping the Samstock crew, organising the drums for the bands and lots more, but the rest of us got to chill out and soak up the fun. There were tons of bands from New Zealand and beyond at this awesome youth event, including Matt's band Native who played a wicked set on Saturday night. We survived a very cold and rainy Saturday morning, passing the wet hours with cups of tea and a fun chapel service run by members of Student Soul. Highlights for us all included: the sun finally coming out on Saturday (!), seeing Matt play, seeing Mephymology and Anna Macdonald play on Friday night, watching the Getaways (A.K.A. Anna and Mackenna) play some beautiful original songs in the afternoon on Saturday, and Rapture Ruckus on Saturday night was HEAPS of fun! On Sunday morning the sun was shining and we had church with worship led by Dunedin musician Malcolm Gordon. Andy from the band Calling Elijah spoke about listening to God, and doing something instead of waiting for something to happen to you. It was awesome to catch up with friends from lots of other schools and youth groups in such an inspiring place. Samstock raised about $2000 for their main sponsor Tearfund to buy pigs for villages in rural China. Thanks to Flagstaff (especially Trudy, Sarah, Andrew, Sue and Tom) for giving us canvas rooves over our heads and being our friends, and to Kirstin for being the organiser of such a cool event!
October looks to be a quieter month for us as we have lots of school/uni/polytech assessments looming, but we'll still have time to meet and make fun!
Aroha, Helen.

What do you know about LOVE?

Kelvin mentioned in his sermon on Sunday, the Greek words for love. I found this article, have a read, it is very easy to digest....

This article is bought to you by Sharron Myers.

Eros
Eros is the first type of love we are all familiar with. Our English word Erotica is derived from the word Eros. Sadly, some people never get passed this type of love and base their relationships purely on sexual attraction. This is the type of love that merchandisers tend to play on with the public trying to get us to buy their products to make us more attractive to the opposite sex. Unfortunately, aromatherapy is being misrepresented by these same people also to traffic their products. You would be surprised to see how many products are being offered specifically to attract the opposite sex using aroma.

So, the point is that erotic love is not a deep meaningful love but superficial and based on sexual attractiveness only.

Storge
Storge is what we find in families between the different members. It is the love of mother, father, brothers and sisters. This is a much stronger type of love and involves commitment. “Blood is thicker than water” and most people will do all they can to stand behind their families.

Philia
Philia is pertaining to what we might call a brotherly love. Not brotherly in the sense of family, but in the sense of kinsmenship. This is the type of love that makes us want to help the little old lady cross the street safely and watch out for our fellow man. It is a good type of love and helps us to see others as needing our love but, sadly, it can often also be a selfish love. Many people only show love to others if they can get something out of it.  Thankfully, most people love out of pure motives.

Agape
Agape is the highest form of love there is. This is an unconditional love for others in spite of their character flaws and weaknesses. It is a difficult love to obtain simply because we, as humans, are usually concerned more with ourselves and how the world and people around us affect us. In order to love in the agape way, we must overcome our selfishness and look to the needs of others. Prime examples of this type of love are people like Mother Theresa, Cardinal Leger etc. These are people who look out for others interests above their own. It is a special kind of love that needs to be cultivated for it to grow. We can only achieve this type of unselfish loving as we put the needs of others as a priority.

Without getting religious here, I just want to tell you there is a verse from the Bible that fits well with this concept. It is called the Golden Rule. Luke 10:27, says “Love your neighbour as yourself” and "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." -Matthew 7:12 . All relgions of the world share in this same philosophy.

One thing that stuck out to me as I read these is that it says to love your neighbor as yourself. Sadly, many people in this day and age, don’t love themselves. If you don’t love yourself how can you love others? Unconditional love needs to start with you. You must learn to accept the fact that you are a special and unique person. Yes you have flaws, we are all human, but these flaws do not make you less of a person. Learn to love yourself in spite of your shortcomings and accept yourself for who you are. As you love yourself you will find it easier to love others.

The second thing that stands out is that the Golden rule says to do what you want others to do to you. This is not the same as “Don’t do to others what you don’t want them to do to you.” It is not a position of avoiding doing evil or harming others but an actual DOING of something for others. This requires action on your part. It says “DO unto others”. It is when we realize that we reap the rewards of love as we involve ourselves in the lives of others, making their lives easier and more pleasant, as we would want our own lives to be.

Enjoy the month of Love and remember always to love yourself and to DO something for someone each day.

FUSE “Aotearoa’s ultimate talent quest”

On the 29th of May we set out for Wellington in a van. The trip up flew past with the in-house entertainment that goes hand in hand with a van full of musicians. All your favourite numbers performed as a 7 piece a cappella group, it sure was entertaining. In the Capital we were housed by two lovely families who did well to survive the hectic weekend! The two groups, from the FRIDGE, that went to FUSE were:

The Getaways (Singer-songwriter Duo Anna Fielding & Mackenna Roxborogh)

NATIVE (Acoustic rock- Matt Dent, Hamish Mepham, Matt Caradus & Greg Stanley).

During auditions The Getaways were standout performers and were approached by officials to perform again at a café stage. Anna and Mackenna were in their element at the café and wooed listeners with their intriguing harmonies and addictive lyrics! NATIVE were recalled to perform on both Saturday, and Sunday night on main-stage opening for well known New Zealand bands Arms Reach and Rapture Ruckus. NATIVE also received an award for Best Original Song, on the Renouf Stage.

FRIDGE SERVICE (22nd of June)
We watched a ‘Nooma’ DVD by Rob Bell which reflected on God’s grace and the following challenge:

Have you ever got busted for something you’d done?
Do you think it’s possible to keep something secret and never get busted for it?
Nothing you ever do could make God love you less.
Should we feel the same about all other people?
W.W.J.D?

It was an awesome evening, with the chance to discuss the above, a prayer of confession, food, proper coffee and time to catch up with everyone afterwards and enjoy the delightful music of The Getaways.

This Sunday!492 dagen geleden

Hello all!

FRIDGE service this Sunday! The scheme is to have a byo fish and chip dinner between 6 and 7pm, worship from 7-7.30pm and then watching the DVD "Everything is spiritual" from 7.30pm to 9pm...Catch yo then.

Info on the DVD: In the Hebrew Scriptures there is no word for “spiritual.” And Jesus never used the phrase “spiritual life.” Why? Because for Jesus and his tradition, all of life is spiritual. But what does that really mean?

SO!

We've now run two youth services! It is time to reflect on how they have gone, and see how we can build on what we have started. This is where you guys come in! It would be awesome if YOU could share your ideas, goals, aspirations for future services, and have an active role in our mission! You can do this here on this page by leaving a comment, or by contacting me directly by email etc.

Cheers,

Matt

FRIDGE IN MAY548 dagen geleden

A snap shot of the FRIDGE in May!

We:
•Had a night out at Smails Beach with a fire, damper and roasted marsh-mellows!
•Spent an evening creating works of art, the fruits of which can be observed at St John’s church
•Watched the movie The Golden Compass, based on the first of a series of novels written by Phillip Pullman. Following the movie, we discussed some of the controversy surrounding Phillip Pullman’s portrayal of the church.
•And we held a youth service! The FRIDGE service was the first of a series of services to be held on the 4th Sunday of every month, for the foreseeable future! I.e. the next one is on the 22nd of June!

Coming up!
•We have a speaker from “Rape Crisis” coming to talk to us on the 8th of June.
•FUSE- A nationwide Christian music festival and talent scout in Wellington where both Anna and Mackenna, and Native (see www.myspace.com/nativedunedin) will be playing.

FRIDGE YOUTH SERVICE548 dagen geleden

By all accounts the FRIDGE youth service on Sunday the 25th of May ROCKED!
The worship band was lead by Sam Dent and consisted of Mackenna, Anna, Fiona and Matt. The line up of songs included:

Grace like rain
Blessed be your name
Hallelujah your love is amazing
You you you
Thank you for healing me

The theme of the service was Hauora, the Maori philosophy of health and well-being, unique to New Zealand. Hauora is made up of four elements:
• Social
• Physical
• Spiritual
• Mental
Maintaining a balance of these elements is good for our well-being. However, keeping a balance between them all can be a challenge. We came to a revised version of Hauora where we approach the mental, social and physical activities in our lives with God. Thus we are living our lives with God, as apposed to constraining God to a certain part of our day, or to only Sundays.

We concluded the service with supper and the opportunity for youth, parents and supporters, from a variety of denominations, youth groups, schools & churches, to meet each other and eat together.

The FRIDGE would like to thank all those who contributed to the service through their presence and/or contribution to supper, the band, sound gear, thoughts and prayers.

We look forward to the next youth service on the 22nd of June!
