The characters on 90210 live relatively untroubled lives, and two of the stars are ready for that to change.

In interviews, both Shenae Grimes, who plays Annie, and Beverly Hills, 90210 vet Jennie Garth, who plays Kelly, told TVGuide.com they're ready for their characters' problems to get messier.

"I would love to see Kelly — the real side of her," said Garth, who started playing the character in 1990. "I would like to see her raising her son by herself and the comedy that comes out of that, and the heartache. There's a lot more that goes on that the audience isn't getting to see, I think."

Garth knows Kelly has always come off as a little perfect — "And I don't buy it," she said with a laugh, sitting in a booth at Los Angeles' Kokomo Cafe, the real-life restaurant that stands in for The Peach Pit on the CW series.

Grimes says her character can handle more complications too. "I want her to have some fun," the 19-year-old actress said. "I want her to get in some trouble, I want her to have some fights and heartbreak and I want her to experience everything that a teenager should experience."

Not that she wants things to get too terrible. The heart of 90210 has always been friends and family coming to the rescue when things go badly. And everyone will have plenty of chances to lend a hand this season, given Adrianna's pregnancy, Ethan's car wreck, and other surprises.

"There hasn't been that much real suffering on our show," Grimes said. "I think suffering comes from drama or bad things that happen because of bad intentions. And usually on our show the drama that is inflicted upon people doesn't come from a negative place. I think pain does come, but there are so many loved ones around, everybody on the show to bring them up, which is hopefully the case for everybody."

Brenda Walsh directed West Beverly's school play on 90210, but her brother Brandon will soon call the shots for the show.

Jason Priestley, who played Shannen Doherty's brother on the original Beverly Hills, 90210, has agreed to helm an episode of the CW reboot later this season, EW's Michael Ausiello reports.

More good news for fans of the Walshes: Ausiello also reports that Doherty is close to a deal to return for two more episodes later this season.

Actress Heather Locklear was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance in the upscale Santa Barbara area, authorities said Sunday.

Locklear, 47, was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer after a resident reported seeing the actress leaving a parking lot and "driving erratically," patrol spokesman Tom Marshall said.

The officer noticed Locklear's car parked on a state highway and blocking a lane in Montecito, a wealthy community about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. She was believed to be alone in the car, Mr Marshall said.

"In talking with her, (the officer) determines that she seems to be under the influence of something," Mr Marshall said.

Locklear was taken to the police station, where she was tested for alcohol and drugs. She was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication. She was later released from custody.

Locklear's TV credits include T.J. Hooker, Dynasty, Melrose Place and Spin City, and her film roles include The Perfect Man and Uptown Girls.

Locklear checked into a medical clinic in June to seek treatment for anxiety and depression.

Last year, she got a divorce from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora after 11 years of marriage. They have a daughter, Ava Elizabeth.

Fourteen years after leaving her career-defining role of Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, Shannen Doherty is finally sharing her side of the story to refute the "bad girl" label and set the record straight in the latest issue of Us Weekly, available now.

Among the revelations: Doherty, who will reprise her character in four episodes of the CW's 90210 revamp, denies a claim by Tori Spelling that she once got into a fistfight with Jennie Garth.

"We never did," Doherty, 37, tells Us. "I think I would remember Jennie's fist connecting with a part of my body or a part of my face."

"It just goes to show you how people will lie," she says of Spelling's account in her autobiography.

Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth joined the cast of CW's 90210 spin-off Saturday at a beachside bash to celebrate the show.

The party took place on the Malibu shore - about 20 miles away from the Beverly Hills zip code, the AP reports.

Doherty and Garth, who will reprise their roles as Brenda Walsh and Kelly Taylor in the new show, arrived separately.

Joe E. Tata, who played Peach Pit owner Nat, also attended.

Party guests expecting to get a glimpse of the show's first episode were out of luck: The premiere was not screened. (The CW recently announced pre-broadcast copies of the series would not be distributed to TV reviewers and reporters as a "strategic marketing decision.")

Meanwhile, Garth recently said reuniting with Doherty (with whom she once got into a fistfight) wasn't "as bad as I thought it would be.

"We’re both grown women, both professionals," she told TV Guide. "Once we were working, it felt like a good fit.”

The show premieres Sept. 2.

Jennie Garth admits she was initially uneasy about working with Shannen Doherty again. (The two famously clashed during their 90210 heyday — and once got into a fistfight.)

But when she reunited with Doherty to shoot CW's 90210 spin-off, she tells TV Guide, “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

“I’m not much of a small talker, and I don’t think she is either. I was a little nervous because I hadn’t seen or talked to her in 14 years," she goes on. "Everyone was making it out to be such a big deal that I think we both fell prey to having that affect us.”

With their squabbles behind them, Garth says, “I think it will be OK. We’re both grown women, both professionals. Once we were working, it felt like a good fit.”

Co-star Ryan Eggold, who plays Kelly’s new beau on the series, admits "everybody was on pins and needles and sort of waiting to see how they’d react.

“They started off kind of tentative, but by the time we were five takes in, they were giggling and seemed to be reconnecting," he says.
