Dave? single launch featured in The Courier - here tonight!6 giorni fa

No questioning ability

Dave?

In that time-honoured way of many musicians, young Dundee band Dave? don’t like revealing too much about themselves, even on their own MySpace pages, writes Alan Wilson, Rocktalk reporter.

French pop? Religious? Intriguing descriptions of their music, as listed on their homepage.

Entirely wrong by the way, but it works—you’re immediately drawn in and clicking on one of their tracks just to see what they sound like.

“The reason for that is we just get sick and tired of people labelling you, if you say you’re an indie rock band then people are likely to just go, ‘oh right, another one of them’,” lead singer Daniel “Teeth” Quinn told Rocktalk.

“The thing is, if you listen to our songs on MySpace, they sound quite poppy, but if you saw us live then it’s much rockier.

“We’re all into different kinds of music so really that came about because we don’t want to be labelled like everybody else.”

That description, and their curious use of the question mark after their name, Dave?, will always provide a talking point for interviews.

Called after their mate due to alcohol-fuelled brain numbness (they couldn’t come up with a band name by closing time in the pub), they’ve now understandably got bored explaining the reason for the question mark.

As a result they’re on a mission to wind up naiive music journalists desperate to reveal the huge mystery . . .

There is no mystery by the way, except they can’t really remember the proper reason, and are still questioning the decision, so the curious punctuation stays.

There’s no question mark over the music however; their new single, That Spark, which comes out on Monday, is their catchiest work to date—a fine piece of melodic, harmonious indie-rock. Daniel said, “We just thought it would be the best song to release as a single as an invitation to the band because it’s accessible, just a catchy pop song.

“It will allow people to get into us before they hear any of the heavier stuff and not scare them off too early,” he joked.

They launched That Spark on Friday (December 11) by headlining at The Doghouse, after dozens of support slots there in the past year or so.

“This is our first headline slot at the new Doghouse—we played the closing night at the old venue, so it’s good to get a chance to play the new one.

“I think it’ll be the longest set we’ve ever played live because we’re on for 45-50 minutes. We’ll be playing a lot of songs we don’t usually play live and we’re actually doing a surprise cover. I’m not allowed to say what it is, but it involves Callum from Peg & The Bouffants playing saxophone.

“There’s a few variations already of the song kicking around so we’re trying a mix of them all together.

“The band has changed a good bit over the past year—we changed guitarist and drummer, and I think we found (drummer) Scott in the primate cage at Edinburgh Zoo.

“The plans for next year are to get as many small festival slots as we can—to get on a stage at the smaller festivals would be great—and to play as many gigs out of town next year.”

Support on Friday comes from The Trade and Dead Sea Souls and entry to the Doghouse is £5 from 8pm.

Doghouse Opening Party in The Courier88 giorni fa

THE DOGHOUSE, one of Dundee’s best-known live music venues, opens it doors once again this weekend, albeit in a different place.

A converted church in Ward Road has been leased for 10 years to Sarah Hill, who managed the old premises on Brown Street.

A private party was held in the new venue last night to herald the dawn of a new era for the Doghouse.

Local group Lefty and Friends helped christen the new venue by playing a set. They were joined on stage by local experimental group Hanney.

Tonight the premises will be officially opened to the public with performances by upcoming acts such as The Twist and The Brogues.

Ms Hill said, “We have created a place for new bands struggling for creative space to create new music.”

She tipped several local acts who have frequently played and rehearsed at the original venue, such as The Law and Luva Anna, for great things.

Stevie Anderson, guitarist with The Law, congratulated Ms Hill on securing the new venue before his set with Lefty and Friends.

He said, “The Doghouse has played a big part in the success of The Law, as we were allowed to use the old venue to rehearse for free, and when we played gigs the crowds were always receptive.

“Sarah’s done a really good job with the new venue and I’m sure it will still be an important part of the Dundee music scene.”

Brian Harris, vocalist with Hanney, said he felt the spirit of the original Doghouse would live on.

He said, “The Doghouse is much more than just a building; it’s a community of people who love music —it’s the people there who make it what it is.”

And tonight Saturday, Grand Public Opening

The Brogues + The Twist + Eh! + Stowaways
