Urgent Action: Binyam Mohamed – Digg him out of danger now520 dni temu

http://www.unsubscribe-me.org/action...

Digg him out of danger now to celebrate the International Day Against Torture

Amnesty International is seriously concerned for the health and well-being of Binyam Mohamed, particularly following the US government's announcement that it has charged him for trial by military commission. His mental and physical health are reported to be precarious after years of indefinite detention, and alleged torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment in Pakistan, Morocco, Afghanistan and Guantánamo.

If we do nothing, there is a good chance he will lose his mind or his life. We must not let this happen.

Binyam Mohamed has shown signs of being suicidal. His military lawyer has attempted to obtain an independent examination of Binyam Mohamed’s mental health, but this request has been denied.

Amnesty is asking you to pressurise the British Government to support Binyam's US military lawyer's calls to have him moved out of the maximum security prison Camp 5 in Guantanamo into Camp Echo immediately. Our ask is two-fold, send an email to the Foreign Secretary David Miliband and click the Digg link on that page to help make others aware of this urgent action. You can also find out more.

Diane Abbott's 42-days speech
The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP's speech last night was hailed by the Tory who followed her, David Davies, as 'one of the finest speeches I have heard since being elected to the House of Commons'. Here is what she said.

42-day terror law faces 'very rough ride' in Lords
Lord Goldsmith, the former attorney-general under Tony Blair, also accused the Prime Minister of having pushed the measure through the Commons yesterday purely to show his "political virility", echoing a widespread view that it has little chance of making it onto the statute books in its present form.

Brown triumphs on terror – but then he is stopped in his tracks
Gordon Brown won a hollow victory for his new 42-day anti-terrorism powers last night when he was forced to rely on the votes of nine Democratic Unionist Party MPs during a day of backroom deals and concessions.

Brown wheels out the weak and wounded
Even wheeling out the walking wounded was not enough. Gordon Brown was forced to resort to blatant bribes and an alleged deal with the nine Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) members to save his skin in the biggest Commons cliff-hanger since the days of John Major's government.

Waterboarding Film - The CIA may not want you to see it but everyone else does...580 dni temu

Our latest film which shows the appalling practice of waterboarding 'Stuff of Life' has been picked up in the UK by The Independent, Guardian, Telegraph and Belfast Telegraph.

Internationally two of Spains most important newspapers El Pais and Diario have taken it up as have Italy's La Stampa and Corriere dells Sera. Dagbladet in Norway and a host of important newspapers from Finland and Holland to India and Australia.

The hugely influential blog Boing Boing gave it a plug and the comments have been fascinating to read.

As I write, the video has become the 70th most watched in the world this week on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ7lS... - if you can, drop in and give it a comment and a vote.

Lastly of course, remember that we need you to register your opposition to torture by signing up at http://ww.unsubscribe-me.org

URGENT ACTION - Parliament to vote on April 1 on extending pre-charge detention to 42 Days -ACT NOW!607 dni temu

Sadly it is no joke, proposals are being put in front of Parliament to extend the time people can be held without charge in the UK to 42 days - in other words you could be locked up for six weeks without being told what you are suspected of doing. The second reading of the bill is this Tuesday, 1 April! We already have the longest pre-charge detention regime of any country with a comparable legal system and the government has failed to make the case for why it needs to be even longer.

We need you to write to your MP and ask them to stand up for our civil rights and oppose this draconian extension of pre-charge detention. Simply pop your postcode into http://writetothem.com and the site will channel your mail to your own MP. It is important that you write in your own words as this is very much more effective. We know that a large number of MPs are opposed to the proposals and your mail may be just the thing that spurs them into action on this issue.

Please also get everyone you know to sign the petition on the Number 10 site http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/notadaylonger - please do this as soon as possible!

His crime? No passport, the sentence: indefinite. Help Maher Rafat al-Quwari643 dni temu

Maher Rafat al-Quwari is a stateless Palestinian. A year ago, his lawyers learned that he has been declared eligible for release from Guantánamo, but he remains confined for between 22-23 hours a day in an individual, enclosed, steel cell -almost completely cut off from human contact. The cell has no window to the outside or access to natural light or fresh air. He is effectively stuck there as he has no residency papers and no country to return to. His lawyers are seeking residency for him in a safe third country.

“I am Palestinian and I have a wife and two children and we don’t have any official identification. I wanted to go to the UN to solve that problem…For that reason I decided to stay in a place where there was not a problem if you did not have identification. That is why I chose to go to Afghanistan.”
He has already paid a very high price for that decision and we are asking you to take 15 minutes from your busy day to write a letter to the US authorities asking for Maher to be released as soon as possible to a country where he and his family will be safe. It is the duty of the US to find a safe country and it is a duty they have neglected.

To help you complete this action we have included notes and information about who to address the letter to on our international action page http://www.unsubscribe-me.org/nonuk.php

Please pass this on to anyone you know who cares about human rights and let’s help reunite Maher with his family.

On Friday 11th January, the wind may have howled and the rain was unrelenting but a few hundred people in London, Belfast and Edinburgh joined protesters around the world dressed similarly in orange boiler suits but what difference did that make?

On 12th January, the Chief of the US Military, Admiral Mike Mullen, that he thought the detention facility should be closed because he believed that negative publicity worldwide had been "pretty damaging" to the image of the US. (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlates... )

On 12th January, the President of Yemen summoned the US ambassador and requested the return of all Yemeni Guantánamo detainees (see http://www.sabanews.net/en/news14485....

Articles in the Guardian, a double-page photo in the Evening Standard, BBC News coverage http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/718365... and a video report beamed around the world by Al-Jazera (http://www.unsubscribe-me.org/guanta... )… this is just some of the fantastic publicity we generated. Thank you.

Add your Voice - join us on the 11th January688 dni temu

Dear Unsubscribers

Now is your chance get out on the streets and take action to show the United States that we want Guantánamo Bay closed!

On 11 January, it will be six years since the first detainees were transferred, hooded and shackled, into Guantánamo Bay.

In the years that have followed the US has detained over 700 men, none of whom have had access to a full and fair trial. Today nearly 300 men continue to be detained at the base - many have suffered ill-treatment or torture.

Join us outside the US Embassy in London from 9:30am on Friday 11 January to add your voice to our call for Guantánamo to be closed. The more people that can be there the louder our voice will be. If you aren't able to come to London, there will be major events across the UK, including Edinburgh and Belfast. Go to our website to find out more.

We'd love to hear from you, so please email us to tell us you'll be coming.

Amnesty nominate Guantanamo child for New Statesmen Person of the Year Award714 dni temu

Kate Allen, director of Amnesty UK: “I was recently asked by the New Statesmen magazine to nominate a person of the year for their annual event. I chose Anas el-Banna, the son of Jamil el-Banna, who has been imprisoned without charge or trial at Guantanamo since 2003.”

Anas has led his family’s struggle for justice for his father. At Amnesty we’ve been incredibly impressed as Anas has written to prime ministers, picketed No 10 and appeared on live television. He deserves recognition for his courage and determination.

Fingers crossed for Anas! The winner of the award will be announced on December 13th.
