| We have a serious problem with bullying in NZ schools. In December last year a major international report ranked New Zealand second worst among 37 countries when it comes to bullying in primary schools. SS4Q and teacher unions NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua are joining forces to make our schools safe for ALL students, by promoting February 25 as Pink Shirt Day. The first Pink Shirt Day took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, when two 17 year old high school students decided to stand up for a friend who had been harassed for wearing a pink shirt to school. The boys, David Shepherd and Travis Price, decided that the bullying had to stop. They went to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops, sent out the message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning handed them to students to wear. When the bullied boy walked in, according to Travis Price, “It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders. The bullies were never heard from again.” More must be done to stop physical and emotional violence and make our schools safe for all of our young people to learn in. One way we can do this is for the community to stand up and show that bullying is not OK. Schools cannot solve these problems alone. You can help make Pink Shirt day a success. Wear something PINK on Wednesday 25th February. SS4Q is a national network working towards making schools safer for queer young people. It consists of representatives from a range of organisations, and a number of individuals from the GLBTI communities, academics and other interested people. | Hey all, well were into our 6th week back for 2008 and I'd just like to take this chance to say a big 'Hi There!' and 'Welcome' to all our new members of late. Its been great to have some fresh faces (and some from the past) come along. We've had a large influx of members and contacts so far this year both locally and nationally. We also have some new facilitators this year who are helping us balance out the gender ratio. As well as new members and facilitators we have some new board members be appointed whom are sure to make this year 'truelly, truelly, truelly Outrageous! If you are keen to become a facilitator or know more about the group, or if you would like to help out or have any suggestions for future events then please don't hesitate in contacting us. | Hey all, we are heading to Classical Sparks at Hagley Park this Tuesday 5th Feb and taking a Picnic tea, so feel free to come along and bring a yummy plate to share. We will be meeting out side the Museum about 6.30pm, we look forward to a night under the stars, with yummy food, fire works and chilled tunes from Bic Runga and some other guy?! See you there! | Hi all, Well its that time of the year again, and the last Q-topia event for 2007. So to celebrate we are having a Christmas BBQ. All food and drinks (non alcoholic) will be provided. Would be great to see everyone before we take a break over Christmas. Its this Saturday from 4-7pm, let us know if you are keen to come and we will give you address details. There will be lots of yummy food, oh and Ice Cream!!!! We also have our pool up so if you want to go for a paddle feel free to bring your togs. Hope to see you all there! | Hi all, Last weeks event (The Games Night) was heaps of fun, thanks all for coming along (all 17 of us) This weeks event will be on Saturday 24th Hagley Park, The City Council have are kindly putting on a big festive event to celebrate Christmas just for Q-topia - we wish! But yeah some of the facilitators are going and are taking along a yummy picnic dinner - so if you wish to come along text, email or Bebo us and we will let you know what time and where we are meeting. | ||||

| Get those luck dice ready and fine tune your drawing skills, next thursday Qtopia is having a games evening. It should be a good night and these are always alot of fun. Well have a range of games available (ones like Pictionary/Cranium as well as quiter ones like snakes and ladders or whatever) so there is something for everyone!
