| Accidental Death Of An Anarchist | 27 days ago | |||
The Devious Theatre Company are launching their Dario Fo Season with the maniacal murder mystery Accidental Death Of An Anarchist, arguably the Nobel Prize winning dramatist’s most famous play. Written in 1970, Accidental Death Of An Anarchist was inspired by events that took place in Italy in 1969 when an anarchist, Giuseppe Pinelli fell – or was thrown – from the fourth floor window of a Milan police station. He had been accused of a campaign of bombing, of which he was later found innocent. The resultant scandal uncovered a system rife with corruption and intensified public rage at the government. Intensification of public rage is something that Dario Fo is a master of with his work challenging church, government and the authorities in Italy for over 50 years. Accidental Death Of An Anarchist takes place as an enquiry into the anarchist’s death is causing the policemen involved to have some difficulties remembering the details of the event. That is, until a nameless deranged madman shows up and proceeds to tie the authorities around his fingers in a master class performance of utter logic. The cast includes Alan Butler, Sean Hackett, Simone Kelly, Ken McGuire, John Morton and David Thompson playing the famed role of the shape shifting Madman. The production is directed by John Morton, who previously co-directed Trainspotting for Devious Theatre. As is usually the case with adaptations of Dario Fo, this production will look at the events of the play through the prism of modern Ireland and the corruption and scandals inherent in our own political systems. Employing the comedic methods of commedia dell’arte and slapstick as used by Dario Fo, Accidental Death Of An Anarchist is an uproariously funny farce which rallies against political injustice and corruption. Above is the teaser poster for the production which pays homage to the late, great Saul Bass whose look and style have influenced our show. Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue to roll out further promotional materials and some surprises. Stay tuned to the site for further details. This will be the first play to be staged in the Set Theatre, John Street and we at The Devious Theatre Company are proud to be the first group to utilise Kilkenny’s finest new venue. They will be returning in March of 2009 with the next part of their season Dario Fo’s Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! Accidental Death Of An Anarchist will run from Wednesday December 2nd to Sunday December 6th and tickets will soon be made available from the Set Theatre box office in Langtons and Rollercoaster Records in Kieran Street. For all details on the play and the full Dario Fo Season stay tuned this site.

| Shakespeare In Bits | 47 days ago | |||
We know, we're mad. We're in the throes of our Dario Fo season and up to our theatrical necks in rehearsals for Accidental Death of An Anarchist, but never ones to sit about or turn down the opportunity to put on a show, we've managed to squeeze another production in, this time for the October Bank Holiday weekend as part of the Rockfall Festival taking place in Kilkenny. This time the show is Shakespeare In Bits which is described as ‘an irreverent sketch show of Shakespearean proportions’. The show is devised by and starring Stephen Colfer, John Doran and Eddie Murphy, three familiar faces from past Devious Theatre productions who last appeared in Stags and Hens back in July. The show consists of a variety of Shakespeare related sketches, set pieces and some very funny comedy. For any fans of the Bard it’ll have you in stitches. And for anyone who’s not a fan of Mr. Shakespeare, it’s a 50 minute comedic dissection of his work which is a million miles away from how it’s taught in schools. Shakespeare In Bits was previously performed by Devious Theatre as part of the Shakespeare In The House festival which took place in Rothe House this past June. This is a new version of the production with some brand new sketches, scenes, cast members and musical interludes. This marks the third year that Devious Theatre have participated in the Rockfall Festival and as before, proceeds raised from the show will go to the O’Neill Centre (Enable Ireland) based in Kilkenny. Tickets are 8 Euro and will be available shortly from Cleere’s Theatre on 056 – 7762573. The show opens on Friday October 23rd for three nights only. There will also be a matinee performance of the show on Sunday October 25th at 4pm. This performance will be at a reduced rate of 5 Euro. The show is being taken on the road for one night only and will be staged at the Ha'Penny Bridge in Dublin on Thursday November 5th. We'll have some more details on the Dublin outing for the show shortly and we'll be contacting our friends too to make sure your tickets will be available for the Bank Holiday weekend. Keep an eye here on DeviousTheatre.com over the next fortnight as we'll be bringing you some updates on Shakespeare in Bits, some rehearsal photos and more in the build up to the opening night on Friday October 23rd. If you're not doing so already, keep up to pace with Twitter where we'll be providing some live updates and shots on show nights as well.

| Presenting A Season Of Work by Dario Fo | 109 days ago | |||
Frustrated with the government? Rising prices getting you down? Is the justice system failing you? Lost all faith in the Church? Then our newest season of work might just be right up your disenfranchised alleyway. A season of comedic plays by Dario Fo will take place in Kilkenny’s newest theatre venue, the state of the art Set Theatre, John Street, Kilkenny between Winter 2009 and Spring 2010. Dario Fo is Italy’s most famous living playwright, a Nobel Prize winner and joint 7th in The Telegraph’s list of 100 greatest living geniuses (with Stephen Hawking no less). His work has held a mirror up to the corruption, fascism and inequality of Italy’s national systems for over 50 years. His pen has repeatedly cut the throat of those very systems, earning him death threats, litigation and censorship throughout his career. Fo’s famous razor sharp wit has created a body of work that has challenged successive governments, the Catholic Church and the police forces. He has maintained that his work belongs to every citizen who is downtrodden by such oppressive systems. And so, with timely prescience, Devious Theatre are delighted to present two of Dario Fo’s most controversial, comedic, authority slaying works in the Set Theatre. His best known play Accidental Death Of An Anarchist will open the season in the Set Theatre when it runs from Wednesday December 2nd to Sunday December 6th. In the aftermath of the apparent suicide of an anarchist from a fourth floor police window, the policemen involved are having difficulties remembering the details of the event. That is, until a nameless, deranged madman shows up and proceeds to tie the authorities around his fingers in a master class performance of utter logic. Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! will continue the season when it opens in the Set Theatre in Spring 2010. Frustrated by rising supermarket prices, two working class women decide to rebel against the cost of living by taking goods without paying. However, hiding this from their husbands and the authorities chasing them might prove a little trickier than expected. | Kilkenny Alive Stags and Hens Review | 124 days ago
Stags and Hens – a great play from Devious Theatre Thursday, July 23, 2009 By Aisling Hurley Devious Theatre have once again surpassed expectations with their latest play Stags and Hens. It shows a new maturity in their work after the excellent productions of Cannibal The Musical, Trainspotting and John Morton's original work - Heart Shaped Vinyl and Smitten. They have really grown as a troupe with this play by Willy Russell revelling in the meatier parts on offer. Set in 1970s Liverpool, all the action takes place in the toilets of a nightclub. A stag and hen party of the same wedding meet over one fateful and very drunken night. It is a play essentially about shattered dreams. The sadness of the characters lives is depicted in hilarious detail where all they have is sex, football and music to lift them out of their drudgery. This production of the play captured all of its wit but didn't flinch from the pathos either, providing a great night’s entertainment for all. One performance deserves special mention - Ken McGuire was fantastic as the frustrated bully Eddy. He brilliantly captured every nuance of his pathetic swagger. Also John Morton delivered a great character study of a weak willed lothario, Robbie with Ciara Donegan stealing the show on the girls side as the brassy best friend Bernie who is all dirty talk and no action. Their brilliant physical comedy and timing with gags was supplemented by a more rounded approach. It was not as immediate as their other plays but definitely a more satisfying experience. The only criticism was that the Scouser accents drifted at times and some jokes were lost because of bad projection. Overall, the real joy of their shows are the audiences they attract - not just the usual friends of the cast or cultural snobs but cool people with tattoos and cans of beer. Long may they continue.

| The Big Day Approaches... | 130 days ago | |||
Going by our very specific banner, Stags and Hens will hit the stage in 4 days, 8 hours,3 2 minutes and 34 seconds. And production has been ramping up in a big way as we approach the final strait. 8 weeks of rehearsal and prep have whizzed by at a startling speed. We've been doing a full week of dress rehearsals which has been exhausting but exhilirating to see the play coming together. The costumes are quite comfortable although I don't pity the girls having to manage all those heels. All of the gents remain unshaven and by Sunday a fine selection of sideburns, moustaches and handlebars should be on display. Herbal cigarettes are absolutely fucking disgusting. There's going to be a lot of slightly nauseous cast and audience members next week, believe me. Kevin is taking the fine tooth comb to the production and the creases are being ironed out. He's also tightening up the soundtrack for the play and it's going to be a fantastic one. If you're a 70s music aficionado you will most definitely not be disappointed. Paddy has put the finishing touches to our show programme. We're going full colour baby so, in the parlance of Stags and Hens, it's going to proper smart. The actors are starting to speak exclusively in Scouse accents which is providing quite annoying for anyone not working on the play. Colm is also trying to master a Scouse accent when he's not chalking the specifics into his bible and looking for a 70's shirt befitting a stage manager. Speaking of the stage, Thom and Kevin are moving the set into The Barn today so we'll get a full run at it. Especially looking forward to using the toilets. On the promotional front, the promo trailer has been spreading around the internet and we've got some wonderful feedback on it. Myself and Ken did a spot on Tom Dunne's show on Newstalk yesterday to promote the show and Kevin had a lovely interview printed in the Kilkenny People yesterday. Can't say we like the picture that was used but hey, any publicity is good publicity, right? So we're nearly ready to roll. All we need now is something borrowed and something blue! Stags and Hens will play The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny from July 21st - 25th at 8pm nightly. Tickets are 12 Euro. Bookings can be made on 056 - 7761674.

| The Blood Brothers | 133 days ago | |||
With a cheeky nod to Willy Russell, we unveil the final character from Stags and Hens, the lead singer of The Blood Brothers, Peter Taylor. Played by Eddie Murphy, Peter is the cocksure, charming, lead singer of this up and coming band. A band unfortunate enough to be booked into a dive of a Liverpool club before their single became a hit. Fulfilling their dates, Peter finds himself back in the hometown that he managed to escape years ago for the bright lights of London. And now that he's back, he can see why he left. But there's also the one girl that could have made him stay. And she just so happens to be on her hen night in the same club. Eddie Murphy has previously appeared with Devious Theatre in Cannibal! The Musical. Also featured in the band poster are Laurent Murray, Kevin Mooney (our director) and Jack O'Leary. And don't they look hardcore? Paddy also snuck in a few nods to two other well known Willy Russell plays into the poster. Who says we're not suckers for detail? Stags and Hens will open this day next week, July 21st and run until July 25th in The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny. Tickets can be booked on 056 - 7761674. | The Roadie | 134 days ago
The final Stags and Hens character panel sees the unveiling of the Roadie played by Paul Young. The Roadie is a typically beleaguered band techie trying to find at least one working plug socket in the dingy nightclub that serves as the setting for Stags and Hens. On tour with up and coming band The Blood Brothers, it's up to the Roadie to get them on stage in time. But in a dump this bad, on a night where everything seems to be going wrong, it's not going to be easy. Paul Young has previously worked on Trainspotting and The War Of The Worlds for Devious Theatre. The final main character of the Stags and Hens cast will be unveiled tomorrow. It's a bit different from the character panels but I promise it's going to be a good one. Stags and Hens opens next week on July 21st and runs until July 25th in The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny. Tickets are available at the Watergate Theatre, Parliament Street, Kilkenny and on 056 - 7761674.

| Linda | 136 days ago | |||
The penultimate character panel from Stags and Hens is that of the bride, Linda. Played by Roisin O'Reilly, Linda is the lady of the hour, out on a hen night that she's not really sure she wants. With cold feet growing even colder as the night progresses, Linda is caught between the life that has been prescribed to her and the one she might have had. But at so late an hour, there's nothing she can do but jump into the music and dance the night away. Or is there? This is Roisin O'Reilly's debut performance with Devious Theatre. Stags and Hens will play in The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny from July 21st - 25th. Tickets are currently booking on 056 - 7761674. All updates are on www.devioustheatre.com

| Bernie and Eddie | 137 days ago | |||
| The latest character introduction for Stags and Hens introduces sees the dangerous duo of Bernie and Eddy take a bow. Played by Ciara Donegan, Bernie is an unashamed maneater. And it might be Linda's stag night but Bernie isn't shy about using it as an opportunity to grab a man. Even though she's already married. Bernie is loud, brassy and very opinionated. And she's not going home empty handed. This is Ciara Donegan's debut appearance with Devious Theatre. Played by Ken McGuire, Eddy is the best man of the groom, Dave. Eddy isn't into clubs and he isn't into chasing tarts and he definitely isn't into the music. He just wants to drink. But he doesn't admit to getting drunk. Why? Because he's professional when it comes to his football. And it's professionals that get picked up by American scouts. Ken McGuire has previously appeared with Devious Theatre in Heart Shaped Vinyl, Cannibal! The Musical, Trainspotting, Smitten and The War Of The Worlds. Stags and Hens plays The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny from July 21st - 25th. All bookings can be made on 056 - 7761674. | ||||
