More All Walks!28 days ago

As you can see from the page we have added more images from All Walks. The designers that were involved were really positive about the project and here is what they said about it:

“All Walks is important because it demonstrates how the fashion world is taking the appreciation of all women seriously.” Mark Fast

“It’s been wonderful to make a connection with the woman who will wear my design. A model isn’t just there as a wa lking coat hanger. All Walks encourages this new wa y of designing.” - Georgia Hardinge

“All Walks Beyond the Catwalk is steering the way for diversity in the fashion industry, and is exactly what we need. It cha lenges the ideals of what beauty is and makes us think, really think. I am proud to be a part of such a project.” - Hannah Marshall

“Without individuality or identity, we have nothing that makes us special or important.” - David Koma

“Individuality gives people style and charisma and is what keeps life fresh and interesting. It’s really refreshing to be making and seeing fashion on a variety of different shapes and sizes.” - William Tempest

“Individuality makes you shine.” - Avsh Alom Gur

“When you work with a model so closely and fit the outfit exactly to her body, it just makes you think about the relationship of the garment to the body even more. It becomes more ‘alive’ in a sense.” - Cooperative Designs

“I have always believed that some of the most unique, beautiful, interesting, photogenic, catwalk-worthy models do not fit the current and very limiting modelling industry standard.” - Alexandra Groover

All Walks Beyond the Catwalk63 days ago

On Friday 18th beat attended a very special fashion event. All Walks- Beyond the Catwalk.

The fashion industry is a powerful communicator of ideas about beauty and body image, particularly to women. All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, an initiative founded in May 2009 by Caryn Franklin, Debra Bourne, Erin O’Connor and Susan Ringwood (our Chief Executive Officer), facilitates a conversation around these issues.

Endorsed by the British Fashion Council and inspired by beat, All Walks Beyond the Catwalk collaborates with a new generation of emerging ready to wear designers and a diverse range of professional models to challenge some of the industries long held ideas about female size, shape and age.

This project which has relied upon the good will and generosity of industry supporters, has been an adventure, a first step, and an opportunity for a new generation of ready-to-wear design talent to work alongside a cross section of women from sizes 8-16 and ages 18-65, providing the designers with a greater awareness of some of the issues facing the fashion industry right now, at the outset of their careers.

What has happened so far?

• 8 diverse models showcased pieces specifically designed for them by 8 designers for All Walks.

• Sarah Brown, the Prime Ministers wife, spoke about her support of our work.

• Erin O’Connor and Caryn Franklin also gave a short talk

• 300 of the fashion industry’s leading people attended

• All Walks has been a leading fashion item for Fashion Week.

• One of the designers Mark Fast used his All Walks model to open his show and two other sized 12-14 models in his show – this was covered by many blogs and newspapers!

There is a robot in the Houses of Parliament!68 days ago

Voicebot is run by V for Volunteering. It is a robot that has been set up in the Houses of Parliament which writes out selected comments for MP's to read and think about.

This is available until October 16th so getting submitting and get your voices heard by the people that have the power to make changes! http://voicebox.vinspired.com/our_robot/

This is what they say

We have set The Voicebot to work writing out submissions 24/7.

It will be able to write 15,000 entries before it goes to Parliament on 12th October. We're expecting lots of people to send us messages, more than 15,000 we hope, so we will need to select the best ones. By 'best' we mean the most interesting, insightful, passionate or well-observed. Once we start to get an idea of the messages you want to send to MPs we will provide some guidelines on the Voicebox blog to help you be successful.

Selected submissions will go into a queue and you'll get your photographic souvenir once The Voicebot gets to your message. This could be hours, days or weeks. It all adds to the suspense.

To make things more interesting, we will handpick our favourite 5 messages and invite the authors to attend a special event in Houses of Parliament where you can discuss your views directly with politicians.

Not a single care will be wasted. If your message hasn't been selected to be written out by The Voicebot your cares will still be added to our results page, photo gallery, and searchable database.

From October 12th to 16th, all the responses we collect will be displayed in an exhibition at the Houses of Parliament. The Voicebot will be there too. where it will articulate the cares of a generation directly to politicians.

Help for young people with eating disorders81 days ago

Do you want to take the first steps to Recovery?

Are you aged between 14-25 and need help with your eating disorder?

If you are looking to start the recovery process and feel that you would like support with this, beat the leading UK charity for people with eating disorders is re-launching the online Recovery Club service following its successful pilot. The monthly club will run for a monthly period of six months enabling young people to benefit from the support of their peers and to feel comfortable discussing their concerns and fears about treatment and the recovery process.

The Recovery Club service will offer online peer support to young people with eating disorders through a monthly facilitated club. Hosted by young people who are recovered or recovering from an eating disorder and professionals working in the eating disorders field, the Recovery Club will provide a support service that will enable service users to explore the recovery process, acquiring skills and strategies, to begin their own recovery. Each club will have a theme to enable service users to discuss different issues and aspects of eating disorders and the recovery process with the support of a beat youth team. The club will begin this September and an application to access this service will be going live on the beat website on Wednesday 9th September 2009
