Come and support our runners at the London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April!246 Tage her

Our team members, from all over the UK and ROI have been in training since October 2008 and regularly use our dedicated runners' forum to chat to each other, swap training and health tips and generally encourage an amazing team spirit. They are committed to raising more than £100,000 in this year's marathon to help Samaritans continue to offer their services 24:7.

Silent phonecalls....?554 Tage her

A large number of phonecalls to us are silent. We know that sometimes it's really difficult to say how you're feeling, or describe the situation you're in. Getting the time and privacy to have a conversation may also be difficult. An option is to send an email to us instead - jo@samaritans.org

Emails are answered by the same volunteers that talk via phone - and treated in the same manner as a confidential phonecall.

We will reply as soon as we can.

Thank you to everyone who has joined this group, left a comment (and their luv!). Your support is appreciated!

We can't offer our support directly through this page (via submitted comments) as our service is confidential and anonymous, so if you need to talk to someone now please phone us (the main phone number is available 24 hours), or if you have time to write things down please email or send a letter or txt (the addresses are above), volunteers will reply as soon as they can.

Our Name647 Tage her

Our name is an historical accident. When The Daily Mirror (UK newspaper) first found out about our service, they described the volunteers as "Good Samaritans", and the name stuck. You do not have to be religious in any way to volunteer or to get in touch. Volunteers do not impose their own religious, political or philosophical beliefs on people who get in touch.

Why do people call us?675 Tage her

People call us for all reasons, but generally it's because they're distressed in some way. They might be feeling really upset, depressed, confused, worthless, isolated or scared and need someone to talk to who doesn't know them, so that they won't feel judged or embarrassed.

You can say as much or as little as you like, when you're ready. The volunteer will listen and might suggest 'ways forward' (such as other helplines or sources of professional help), but they will not tell you what to do. Decisions are always yours.
