| Wayne Rooney continued his rich vein of form in front of goal as he helped ten-man Manchester United record an impressive 3-1 win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Rooney notched his fifth goal of the season and showed that United are serious contenders to retain their Premier League crown despite the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer. Despite Jermain Defoe firing Tottenham into the lead, United hit back with goals from Ryan Giggs, Anderson and Rooney and ended Tottenham's 100 per cent start to the campaign. Their victory was even sweeter after Paul Scholes was shown the red card in the second half for two bookable offences. Tottenham got off to a dream start when they scored in the opening 60 seconds. Benoit Assou-Ekotto crossed into the box. Nemanja Vidic headed the ball across goal and Defoe was on hand to fire a spectacular overhead kick past Ben Foster into the corner of the net. But United got themselves back into the game when they drew level on 25 minutes. Wilson Palacios was penalised for fouling Dimitar Berbatov on the edge of the box Giggs curled a left-foot free-kick past the stranded Carlo Cudicini into the roof of the net. Berbatov almost made a dream return to his former club on 27 minutes when he beat Robbie Keane and fired a fierce shot which produced an excellent stop from Cudicini, who did well to tip the ball over the bar. United blew a golden chance to take the led on the half hour mark. Patrice Evra crossed for Rooney who saw his shot beaten out by Cudicini. The rebound fell to Berbatov, who saw his shot cleared off the line by Sebastien Bassong. Berbatov then wasted another golden chance when he struck the ball over the bar from close range. But the Premier League champions managed to grab a second on 41 minutes. Scholes' shot was only half cleared by Ledley King. The ball fell nicely to Anderson on the edge of the box and he drilled a low shot past Cudicini into the corner of the net. Jermaine Jenas was brought on at half-time and almost made an immediate impact on 54 minutes when his fierce drive was superbly saved by Foster. From the resulting corner, Peter Crouch rose the highest in the box and saw his header strike the top of the bar. United were reduced to ten men on 58 minutes when Scholes was shown his second yellow card of the game following a lunging challenge on Tom Huddlestone. Despite the loss of Scholes, United could have added a third on 67 minutes when Rooney broke clear of the Tottenham defence and saw his shot pushed onto the bar by Cudicini. But United sealed the victory when Rooney made it three for United on 78 minutes. Darren Fletcher's pass picked out Rooney who skipped past Alan Hutton and fired the ball through the legs of Cudicini. | |||

| REPORT united 1 - celtic 1 | 11/8/08 | ||
| Giggs pounced on 84 minutes to head in from close range after Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc parried Cristiano Ronaldo?s swerving shot. It capped a period of complete dominance ? and growing frustration ? as the Reds laid siege to Celtic?s goal in the second half, after going into the break 1-0 down courtesy of Scott McDonald?s early goal. For long periods it looked like the Scots would hang on to their lead, but Giggs? goal, his 26th in Europe, earned a point that, barring a comprehensive Aalborg win at Old Trafford, will see Sir Alex?s men through safely to the Last 16. Despite Celtic?s commanding home record, the United boss stopped short of deploying a full-strength Red army. Instead, he opted to rest some of his troops, including Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra. John O?Shea slotted in on the left side of defence, while Carlos Tevez, operating on his own with Ryan Giggs hovering just behind, made just his second start in seven games. At right back, 18-year-old Rafael was included from the off, with Gary Neville and Wes Brown both left in Manchester nursing minor injuries. Sir Alex also took the bold step of handing Ben Foster his European debut. Despite signing in July 2005, Foster?s Celtic Park outing was only his second appearance since arriving at OT. Foster could do little, however, when Australian striker Scott McDonald lobbed superbly over the 6ft 2in custodian in the 13th minute. Although not entirely against the run of play, the Reds had enjoyed a bright opening spell. Tevez, desperate to impress, won the game?s first corner in the third minute. Celtic failed to clear convincingly and the ball fell to Cristiano Ronaldo, who saw his volley from 12 yards bravely blocked. Ronaldo went closer from a 10th-minute free-kick, after Barry Robson clattered into Darren Fletcher 25 yards from goal. His shot beat the Celtic wall, but kept rising and flashed over the crossbar. McDonald?s opener then galvanised the already vocal home support, who jeered every Reds touch with deafening derision. The boos turned to ironic cheers when Rio Ferdinand spurned a golden chance to draw level on 19 minutes, the defender blazing over from close range. He then saw a header cleared off the line. Celtic kept their pre-match promise to get in the Reds? faces, as United?s midfielders enjoyed little time on the ball. Without the freedom to create from open play, United were forced to rely on set-pieces. A corner in first-half injury time almost provided the equaliser, but Nemanja Vidic couldn?t direct his close-range header under the crossbar. Sir Alex recognised the need for change at the break and replaced Nani with Dimitar Berbatov. Desperate Celtic defending from Gary Caldwell prevented Ronaldo from tapping in early in the second half, before Artur Boruc saved comfortably from the no. 7 moments later. United kept probing and Berbatov?s introduction almost yielded a goal on 56 minutes. In what was almost a carbon copy of his first strike at OT a fortnight ago, Berbatov flicked a shot goalwards. This time, however, Shaun Maloney cleared off the line to preserve Celtic?s advantage. United?s summer signing went close again after a clever ball from Rafael to the back post was headed down by John O?Shea. The Bulgarian couldn?t make decisive contact and the ball looped harmlessly into Boruc?s arms. Then an almighty scramble on 68 minutes saw Tevez, O?Shea and Fletcher | |||
