Pray for Steve McDonald573 days ago

I would like to dedicate this note to Chelsea’s father and my boss, Steve McDonald, Steve is currently in hospital at the moment, he went in for a cat scan because we thought he had congestive heart failure, turns out that is not the case and they are currently doing more tests. The worse case scenario would be cancer.

What I would ask is that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers during this troubling time.

God Bless

Happy St George's Day - April 23rd582 days ago

Today is St George's day, the national (if largely uncelebrated) day of our jolly good neighbours, the English. It is also the anniversary of the deaths of some of England's most famous literary sons. In 1616, William Shakespeare died; in 1850, William Wordsworth died and in 1915, Rupert Brooke died.

Scottish Christians April Newsletter596 days ago

Hello and welcome to the Newsletter for Scottish Christians for the month of April 2008. It has been an exciting month for all at Scottish Christians and we have an announcement to all who haven’t yet checked out our Internet Message Board Forum. I apologize that this newsletter is rather brief and 9 days late. I have been moving house and it has been chaos here.

Message Board hits go through the roof!

Well the trial month having the board open was an AMAZING success as in the month of March we had an amazing 19,982 hits to our forum. (Thats on average about 645 hits a day) which is an amazing level for the amount of members we have. We had 16 new members and even had 11 online at one point. We had 1029 new posts and 109 new threads. All were up on the previous month. We have a new URL at www.scottish-christians.co.uk/forum.html to make it easier for you to find us.

Bebo site doing really well

As I write this we have had 1656 profile views, we also get a few great comments from everyone that uses the site and also a few great forum posts. If this is your chosen medium of viewing Scottish Christians then let me just say that we are blessed to have you and we love that you visit us. If you have any friends that may be interested in joining us, we would love to get to know them also. We also try to post blogs abbout once a week that also appear on out Toolbar.

If you only use one part of the Scottish Christians service this is for you

We would also like to deepen our relationship with all of our members, regardless of how we know you. If you are a member of the bebo site then feel free to give the message board a try. If you are on the message board then feel free to check out our Bebo site. If you haven’t had a look at our toolbar then feel free to download it.

Toolbar Downloads are up also

I don’t know if you are aware or not but Scottish Christians has its own toolbar. We started this so that we could connect all of our members with the most accurate Christian news but there are a few things that other members have raised so I feel I must address them here. We are fully aware that no one wants to mess with their internet and/or computer settings. We did away with the complexities of installing-you don't have to do or change anything. Simply click to download-choose run and you are done. Nothing at all to lose. There is no spy ware - no pop ups and no personal information gathered. Of course if you ever did want to go back to your old toolbar you can simply delete and your done. We highly recommend that you give it a test drive. Just click onto the toolbar to begin the download-it will take just a few seconds.

Forward this email to someone less fortunate than you
If there is someone who is less fortunate than you (doesn’t get this newsletter) then feel free to forward it on to as many people as you wish. Scottish Christians wishes to reach as many people for Christ as we possibly can. We would also like to build a great online Christian Community but that is secondary to advancing the kingdom of God in Scotland

We love you all and wish you all of God Blessings throughout this month

The dangers within - The emergent church598 days ago

The reason for this blog is to warn of the emergent church movement. I was at a seminar last night that spoke about where they were at odds with the Evangelical Church.

For those of you who have no idea what the Emergent Church is I would ask that you do a Google search for names such as “Rob Bell”, “Brian McLaren” “Emergent Village” “Tony Jones” and many others.

I first came across the Emergent church when I was taken in by Rob Bell’s short video series “Nooma” I had watched with a few of my friends, some great 10 minute videos that were both thought provoking and made me think positively about my faith. Now there is nothing wrong with grabbing folks attention and although I would advise people to tread with caution around anything that is Emergent Church based. These weren’t all that bad.

Now the Emergent Church is not just another denomination of Christianity, it is a rather dangerous slide from Christianity. They are very Postmodern in their thinking and are very into un Biblical teachings.

3 ways that show this is their adoption of yoga, now yoga has its history in Buddhism, Hinduism and the New Age movement. Another way they “break the mold” is by advising that the Bible is not the true authority. Rob Bell in his book “Velvet Elvis” is quoted as saying “The Bible, is that he best God can do?” and lastly they have repetition of prayers, advising their followers to repeat the same prayer 50-100 times a day.

The worrying thing is that some people are being conned and taken in by this. Many folks who are genuinely seeking to come closer to God are being sucked in by this movement. Let me assure you one thing, to get Closer to God you need to read your Bible and pray without ceasing. Pray what’s in your heart and not some mindless repetition or some garbled gobbledegook.

One last piece of advice, if it’s not in the New Testament then don’t be doing it. God’s word is not to be changed and we are not to try and find him in strange ways. The epistles are full of warnings about these guys and still we take no heed.

If you need any advice or wish to make comments I would love that!

Are we teaching to Jews or Greeks?609 days ago

In the same vein as the last two blogs I have written I want to ask you a few questions: (These are assuming that you witness to other people)

When you witness, how do you approach the gospel?
Are you confident the person you are talking to knows the gospel message?

The reason I ask this, is that more and more the churches (in Scotland and elsewhere) are tailoring their message to the Jews but not the Greeks. Are you lost? Then read on!

In the early church there were two types of people spoken about: Jews and Greeks.

The Jews knew their law and in many cases wished to have the belief in the messiah but still have their old laws. (See quite a few of the epistles for historical clarifications on that one) The Jews didn’t have to be taught the Old Testament as in many cases they could recite “chapter and verse”

The Greeks were a different story, they had no prior teaching and were an open canvas to work from. They had to learn the basics first and then be taught the gospel.

Now I am not saying one group are better than another, but in today’s society we face the same issue. We have a churched generation who are frustrated by a lack of proper defense of the faith so they have left the church. On the other hand we have an un-churched generation that cries out for some sort of spirituality that we must reach also. Now if we could even get 20% of those people in a relationship with Christ, our churches would be bulging again.

Now I am here to win souls and not bulge churches, but I am also the first to admit that the two go hand in hand so I am willing to do the second as long as I achieve the first!

As usual I welcome comments and I love you all

Why believing in Genesis could help your Christian witness610 days ago

This blog is exactly what it says on the tin. (I hope Ronseal doesn’t sue me!) In order to be effective as a witness for Jesus Christ in Scotland (or anywhere else for that matter) then we have to understand what the Bible says. The most used acronym by Christians recently is BIBLE Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Now I am of this viewpoint, that the Bible will not have every scenario listed but it does offer practical basic advice.

Like every book, it has a foundation. The Bibles foundation is Genesis, it show’s us how the world began. It starts with “In the beginning God______” Now here is where we have a choice. We either chose to believe in the God of the Bible or we don’t. I personally believe that the Bible is the word of God and that we should believe it happened exactly as it is recorded.

Like any historical journal that was written prior to my lifetime, I wasn’t around at the beginning of the Earth. Going by the genealogies listed after Genesis. (Now the Jewish scholars were very zealous of keeping their records, they liked to prove where they came from!) Prior to the flood was about 2300 years. That a worldwide flood happened approximately 4400 years ago and the earth has been in recession since.

Now this is completely at odds with Evolution, who believes that we are the pinnacle of the tree and that everything prior to us evolved to us. That the earth was founded anything between 4600 million and 4.6 billion (dependant on what textbook or what museum you visit) years ago when nothing exploded into a big bang. From this explosion chaos turned into order. We came from rocks and the soup coming together, primeval sludge was made, this evolved several times to a monkey and eventually to us, the pinnacle of the chain.

Now this all is based on a theory that has yet to be proven but in most westernized countries it is shown as fact. Now to our eternal fame it was one of our own sons that helped popularize this theory. The chaps name was Charles Lyall (a Scotsman) who turned the head of a young Englishman who was studying to join the Anglican ministry. That young man was Charles Darwin, who published the theory of “the origin of the species” in 1859 and was responsible for the natural selection theories. Now some of Darwin’s work is scientific and his place in the scientific community and his contribution was amazing. The interpretation of his work by later generations however is problematic.

Now Evolution isn’t even scientific, It is still at the theory stage, had this been a creationistic theory then it would never have made the textbooks. Modern science works on the following premise:

Facts – Scientific Experiments to prove the facts – Develop the theory around the facts and evidence gained – Publish findings based on solid scientific evidence.

Evolution works like this:

Theory – Can’t prove the theory and most alleged proofs have been debunked a long time ago – Publish findings anyway.

Now I have no issue with Evolution being taught in schools, just teach it as it should be taught. As a theory. Not as a scientific fact, which it plainly is not.

Our generation has been conned and it is time we asked for nothing but the truth in our textbooks. In America, most states have a resolution to have “accurate, factual and up to date textbooks” The education curriculum people are failing the kids. In Scotland we have no such resolute, we have a socialized government who has standardized the education in all comprehensive schools.

Failing that we could always home school, teach kids the facts. Let them make an open and honest choice! Otherwise we may continue to fight a losing battle.

As always, feel free to comment. (I welcome the feedback)

What glasses do you use?611 days ago

If this sound’s a bit Ken Ham-ish then I apologize as I read a lot of his stuff. I also have been heavily influenced by Dr Kent Hovind.

Can I ask a question? (Too late, I have started so I will finish) If you started to read a book at the beginning and your brother started to read at chapter 5 and you were both only allowed to read one chapter, would you both have the same view of that book?

Of course not! This is what we as Christians are asking Non-Christians to do when we are preaching and evangelizing to them! Many of us who are Christians came from a background that one of our relations at least went to church, or maybe even our parents went. In my case, although my parents didn’t go, I had a Grandfather who had went to the Apostolic Church since Noah was a boy (and even helped build some of them!) and I was sent to a local brethren Sunday school from an early age, so I had an early foundation in Christ.

This didn’t stop me from going awry and I will cover that in a later blog.

Many folks we are trying to reach, either have hardly been to church or have no idea what its all about. Evolution has been preached to them unhindered for however many years until you try to reach out to them. They might see Christianity as some sort of bondage! They may not understand that Jesus, who was both God and man, died so that they could spend eternal life in paradise! We may have the teaching down to a fine art but its like trying to teach someone to construct a sentence when they have no idea what letters are! In many cases we have to go back to the beginning.

The reason I ask “what glasses do you use?” is that due to what I have just explained, although the creationists and the evolutionists have the same facts, they start off from two different perceptions and end up looking at it from two different sets of glasses and in many cases two separate viewpoints.

Now I have a heart for all believers and a real hunger to change Scotland from a pagan country (which it is) to a Christian country. We have a hard job as people will have their own perceptions of Christianity and what it means to be religious. I personally am not religious. I just have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

It has been on my heart now to update this blog on a more regular basis and I plan to do so. The Scottish Christians website (and especially the forum) has got busier over the last few weeks and I have been getting distracted.

Feel free to comment, whether you like what I say or whether you think it is garbage.
