| STEP forward Glasgow's youngest politicians the group who aim to take strides in transforming life for youngsters in the city. They have just been voted in as Glasgow's rep-resentatives on the Scot-tish Youth Parliament at a Mitchell Library ceremony. The 14 to 22-year-olds were picked to represent their local areas. Student Julie Lennox, 18, is on her second term representing Springburn and was Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament of the Year 2009. Last year Julie represented Scotland at the World Youth Congress in Canada. Julie said: "Adults are always making decisions on behalf of young people and quite often they make the wrong ones so it's important we have a forum so our voices are heard." At age 14, Umer Ansari is the youngest Glasgow member of the Scottish Youth Parliament. The Bellahouston Academy pupil wants to work to improve the environment in Govan. He said: "I've always been interested in politics so I thought this was a good way to get involved. "I want to see more bins in around Govan but I also want bigger issues tackled, like gangs and knife crime." The Scottish Youth Parliament, set up in 1999, has representatives for each government constituency and any young person aged 14 to 25 can get involved. | http://www.syp.org.uk After working hard behind the scenes for a while and as a bit of an early festive gift, the Scottish Youth Parliament is delighted to launch its brand new website, designed to make access to the organisation much easier for everyone who has an interest. Most of the features of the site remain as before, but we've seized the opportunity to redesign and re-organise, basing the site on how our different users want to interact with us, rather than being a collection of functions. Anyway, this sort of stuff can all begin to sound a bit boring after a while if you're not a 'techy', and we don't want to take away from the excitement of having a new website to play with! http://www.syp.org.uk | ||||

I.e. obesity/health, safety, substance abuse, etc (Basically the main issues that affect young people and the areas that need to be targeted). | Young people have spoken…and the politicians have listened! Today, the Scottish Parliament rejected the Government’s plans to raise the purchase age of alcohol to 21. MSPS voted by 72 to 47 to scrap the plan, which represent an enormous victory for the SYP and our partners at CARDAS. We’ve been campaigning all summer long for an end to the plan and this is truly a historic day for the SYP. | On Wednesday 13th August, the Scottish Youth Parliament was honoured with a visit by the United States Ambassador to the UK, Robert Tuttle. The Ambassador’s visit was noted by the MSYPs and other young people that attended for the senior diplomat’s charm and willingness to engage with Scotland’s young people. It’s a rare privilege for SYP to be visited by someone so important and high profile. While Robert Holmes Tuttle isn’t necessarily a household name, the position of US Ambassador to the UK is seen as the highest position in the United States Foreign Service and is effectively the personal representative in Britain of President Bush and for the entire USA! | The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) is the latest organisation to formally join the Coalition Against Raising the Drinking Age in Scotland (CARDAS), after its members voted overwhelmingly to oppose moves to prevent under 21’s buying alcohol. Kieran Collins MSYP, Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament, said: “Yet again, decent young people are being discriminated against by a Government intent in tarring all young people with an anti-social behaviour brush. Whilst we recognise a need to tackle Scotland’s alcohol culture and its links to crime, criminalising youth is not the answer.
