| 24/4/09 Portadown orange hall (FAIT) “families against intimidation” | hace 217 días | |||
| Held in an impressive spacious venue, the evening began with some very energetic dancing by the ‘Flower of the Bann’ dance troupe. This was followed by the dedication of a splendid Lambeg drum in memory of UDR members killed during the past troubles, and a book launch on memoirs of an ex prison warden. The music got off to a great start from the band, featuring the accomplished John Trotter playing four different instruments! (Fiddle, Accordion, Trombone and Fife) though not all at once!! The audience enjoyed the vocals of our ladies, Fiona singing ‘Will ye go lassie go’ and Rachel singing ‘Auld maid in a garret’. John and our newest member, Willie Rock, had everyone joining in with a variety of well-known “ sing-alongs”. A great night was had by all! Rachel | ||||

| Songs My Father Sung | hace 520 días | |||
| just to remind everyone of the availibility of our CD "Songs my Father Sung" Containing 15 traditional Orange Folk songs, this is a must for anyone's musical collection. Old favourites such as "Derrys Walls", "The Orange ABC" and "Dollys Brae' are all included as well as introducing some lesser know gems like "The Landing at Torbay" and "The Union Cruiser' and of course it couldn't be without the title track! Featuring the vocal talents of John Trotter, Fiona Trotter, Lyndsey Henry and various members of the USX, this album hopes to re-acquaint you with an important part of our cultural heritage. Message from the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland are delighted to be associated with this CD, “The Songs My Father Sung”, in partnership with the Ulster-Scots Agency. Most of the music recorded here is from our archive of traditional Orange folk songs held at the headquarters of the Institution, Schomberg House. The Orange Institution was founded in 1795, and with it grew a proud musical heritage. The famous combination of fife and drum became the melody and rhythm of Ulster. Moments of Orange history and tradition became poem and song. Many of these songs were published in large volumes during the 1800s, complete with full musical notation and lyrics. However, in some quarters, many of those traditional songs had their original form distorted and their words changed, introducing a sectarian dimension which reflected the tragic realities of life during “The Troubles”. The purity of the original songs was almost lost. As the largest Protestant organisation in the world, we are proud of our values, our traditions and our cultural identity. However we recognise that we must take the lead in showing this generation that our traditions are about pride in ourselves, and not prejudice towards others. In the early 1900s, the recordings of traditional Orange folk songs by renowned author and broadcaster Richard Hayward were a significant milestone. We are delighted that the legacy of William of Orange has once again been brought to life, this time by the Ulster Scots Experience. The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland hopes that this CD will be the first of many as we attempt to educate and inform the community of our rich cultural heritage, through music and song, and place these original songs in the hearts and minds of all those who either cherish their heritage or simply want to learn more of the Orange tradition. | ||||

| 26/03/2008 - Moyarget Orange Hall | hace 611 días | |||
Delighted to be able to help our good friend Jimmy Dobbin out by performing at a fund-raising event in Moyarget Orange Hall. Along with Sam Kane, Carmel, Alister and other artists, there was a good crowd in the hall. And can I just mention how lovely this hall is? Really well maintained and a credit to the local community. We performed in the 2nd half, after the tea - always a bad idea as some members like to "indulge" a bit in the cream cakes (mentioning no names Rachel! ) We tried a few new pieces for the first time, some went well, some not so good. Very strange acoustics tonight with the group, for some reason the fiddles were over-powering the accordions and we can't have that But we thoroughly enjoyed it and accompanying Jimmy while he sang was the highlight of the night for the 2 accordions, who tried to out-do each other with the embellishments. Tonights line up was Ronnie, James Sen, Rachel, James Jun, Valerie, Kenny & Sammy.

Based in a marquee in the grounds of the museum, we had a really relaxing day entertaining the various crowds that came into the marquee during our allocated slots. Also on the programme in various parts of the museum were Bill Teare, Babcock & Bobbins, a Traditional groups and the Greer Brothers.

| We had a fantastic night in Ballymena on Sat night as part of the St Patricks night celebrations. Starting with a Irish stew supper, we knew things were off to a good start!! After some of us eating slightly more than others (not pointing any fingers GRACE ) we took to the stage. MC for the evening was a good friend of the group, Robert Agnew, and as usual Robert had us laughing out loud with his jokes. Valerie wants to know where he gets his joke books from! | ||||

| 14/03/08 - Dunluce Parish Centre | hace 620 días | |||
| Although low in numbers due to other previous bookings, USX were glad to appear at Dunluce Parish Centre. The event was part of the Bushmills Ulster-Scots Heritage weekend celebration of Ulster Scots music, culture and heritage. Other performers appearing with USX where the local Scottish Country Dancing group with May Rooney, music from Ptarmigan and the Grouse Beaters. Prior to the musical interlude there was a very informative talk on tartans from Dr Clifford Smyth, which was very interesting. A warming Ulster stew was also served and greatly appreciated. Our performance was acoustic for the first 20 mins due to an "electrical fault", in other words, a part of the accordion expander was forgotten (ok - my fault ) but after a frantic dash by Muriel to Coleraine to collect the magic box, normal service was resumed. Once we learned that there were experienced country dancers in the audience, we were delighted to encourage them onto the floor for a few gay gordan's, which both they and us both enjoyed. | ||||

| 13/03/2008 - Metropolitian Tabernacle, Belfast | hace 620 días | |||
| USX are very proud that one of our members, James Christie, is a member of the congregation of the Metropolitian Tabernacle, Belfast. James has on many occasions given freely of his own time, and self-funded his trips to the on-going missionary work being under-taken by the Tabernacle in Africa. James is actually just back from Africa on Sunday 9th March, after another week at the mission. The church are building a fantastic future for these deprived people, having already built a school, medical centre and church. So it was a delight for Valerie, Kenny, Sammy, Amanda & James Senior to go along with James to play at a fund-raising concert being held for this worthy charity. Last year it took place in the "minor" hall with approx 800 people. But the success of the event, lead to it being moved into the main church itself, and a audience of 1200!! USX started off the evening and were followed by The New Dawn Quartet, The Low Country Boys and various other talented artists. A fantastic tea was prepared by the church members after the event and was thoroughly enjoyed. It was also great for us to catch up with the Low Country Boys again and wish them well with their new line up. | ||||

| School Workshops in Bushmills | hace 661 días | |||
| Some members of the Ulster Scots Experience visited some Primary Schools in the Bushmills Area to do music workshops for the children. The schools were , Dunluce Primary School and Ballytober Primary School on Monday 4th February and Dunseverick Primary School and Straidbilly Primary School on Tuesday 5th February. In each school the children were told a bit about each instrument and given a chance to try them out. The instruments ranged from drums and shakers to fiddles and accordions as well as many others. The highlight of the workshops with the childern seemed to be the opportunity to have a blatter on the Lambeg drums. All the members, Valerie, Sammy, James and Ronnie were very much impressed with the interest the children showed and also the fact that in all the schools the children were attentive and very well mannered and asked sensible questions about the music and the instruments. Thanks to Mr. Jock Cousins the Ulster-Scots development officer for the area for setting up the workshops. We have been asked to do further workshops in Dunluce Secondary School and a return workshop in Straidbilly, these we hope will take place on Tuesday 12th February. We must also say thank you to the teachers involved who tholed the racket, but we hope the childern found them worthwhile , the four members of the experience certainly enjoyed it. | ||||
