| Words: Bertan Budak The first thing that hits you about Kelly Rowland is how incredibly polite she is. The second – fine, call me shallow (bothered!) - is her looks. The flawless skin, curvaceous booty and her unbelievably toned legs are enough to make even the most kind-hearted of souls get all green-eyed. “I’ve just started working out again,” she tells me after I ask her about her exercise regime. “I exercise around an hour or an hour and a half everyday. I’m trying to get Sereena Williams’ and Beyonce’s legs. “Michelle Williams, my group mate, has the best abs I’ve ever seen! I want her stomach.” Fitness sessions aside, you may remember Kelly as one-third of the successful R&B girl group Destiny’s Child. The three-piece released a long line of hits and award winning albums before announcing their split in June 2005. They made history as the biggest selling girl group of all time according to the World Music Awards and their record label giant SonyBMG. “I missed the times with the ladies but I think that there is a time and a place for change and growth, and that it must take place some time,” says Rowland, whilst slumped in the armchair of her swanky London hotel suite. “That has happened for all three of us and we’re all excited about the space that we’re in right now. Beyonce is in her space, Michelle is in hers and I’m in mine, and it all gives us a chance so that when and if we do get back together, then it will make Destiny’s Child more dynamic.” Two years prior to the split, Kelly released her debut offering Simply Deep. The album spawned a number of hit singles including the Grammy Award-winning track Dilemma, featuring Nelly, Can’t Nobody, Train On A Track and Stole. It peaked at number 12 on the billboard 200 and sold just under 600,000 copies in the States. The album also reached the number one spot in the UK Albums Chart and has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide. “When I first sat down and listened to Simply Deep I immediately knew that I wanted more up-tempos in my next record,” she recalls. “The notes that you take once you’ve finished a record, helps you to progress when you do another. I wanted to speed a few songs up on my new album [Mz Kelly] and that’s exactly what I did”. Now the Texan-beauty has released the follow-up to her 2003 critically acclaimed solo debut. An energetic affair, the finger-snapping Mz Kelly sees Rowland take on a more confident role addressing topics such as sex, lies, deceit and her love for ghetto men. Swimming deep inside the collection of hits is a thrilling run of singles including Ghetto, featuring Snoop Dog, Like This, featuring Eve and the smash hit Work (Put It In), which is available to download now. “Oh my god it [Work] makes you shake your butt in a heartbeat: seconds within hearing it,” says Kelly. “I think a lot of people can relate to it - it’s fun!” The album’s chart performance was moderately successful. It’s first week sales reached just over 80,000, making it Kelly’s first top ten solo album. However, Mz Kelly failed to penetrate the top forty of the majority of the charts it appeared on outside of the States apart from Brazil and the UK. According to Kelly, her label only started pushing the album to it’s true potential once it gained critical-acclaim. “I must admit, now they’re helping me a lot,” she says. “I think that when the album first came out, the label didn’t see the potential that it had, the same way I did and my management did but the great thing is that now they do. They see my passion and my fans’ passion for the album, you know? I’m just happy that they finally got it.” Tomorrow will see the R&B songstress take on the hyped-up crowds at London’s pretentious G-A-Y club. “Yes!” she shouts. “I’m sorry; it’s just that I’m very excited. It’s so crazy because as soon as you go into the venue, it’s almost like there is an energy there that you can’t contain. Once you get on the stage you just bust! It’s so much fun and I can’t wait!” Performing has always been the highlight of Kelly’s career. It you’ve ever seen her strut-her-stuff in person, you’d know of the amount of energy, time and precision she invests in each performance. But sometimes the pressure can be overwhelming. Last year, she collapsed on a stage at a Nigerian festival whilst in mid-routine and was taken to hospital but was released the following day. “I was tired but above anything, I didn’t drink enough water,” she says. “I was dehydrated and I also didn’t eat enough food. I’m fine now though”. Just hours after arriving from Amsterdam – “No! It’s bad for my voice,” she replies after I ask her if she had tried any weed – she did a televised interview on the breakfast show This Morning and grabbed a quick lunch before devoting her entire evening to do press interviews. So, no shopping then? “Of course!” says Rowland. “I went to Selfridges and got a free pair of shoes!” Other than the free gear, Kelly was more shocked by the respect and space she received from UK shoppers who, unlike their American counterparts, understand the importance of space when it comes to shopping. “Everybody is very respectful here [the UK],” she says. “They respect your personal space and you get a chance to just be yourself. Everyone always asks like, ‘do you mind’, never a ‘sign this’, you know what I mean? They’re very respectful and it truly makes me appreciate them and makes me want to do more for them… like when people ask for an autograph I’m like “do you want a picture too?” Kelly Rowland’s single Work is out now on SonyBMG records.
