Adults only? NBC won't pay for review, so Finland bans 'Little House' for kids354 giorni fa

It is the G-est of G-rated TV series in America, but the DVD version of "Little House on the Prairie" has been banned for the children of Finland, Reuters tells us.

Reason: NBC's Universal Pictures didn't want to pay state inspectors $2.57 a minute to review and rate the series, which ran from 1974 to 1983. There were 203, 45-minute-long episodes, so that works out to $23,476.95. (Last year, NBC Universal generated $15.4 billion in revenue.)

Because Universal would not submit to review, the DVD must now carry a sticker stating "Banned for under-18s."

"Such unchecked material should not be shown to children publicly," said Matti Paloheimo, director at the Finnish Board of Film Classification.

Laura's Snow Candy

You will need:
1 cup molasses
1 cup brown sugar
Fresh, clean snow (or crushed ice)

Measuring cup
Large pot
Wooden spoon
Candy thermometer, or cup filled with cold water
Shallow pan, such as a cake pan
Clean towel

Boil the molasses and sugar together in the large pot until the mixture reaches the "hard crack" stage on a candy thermometer, or until a spoonful dropped into cold water forms a hard ball and cracks. Remove the syrup from the heat.

BE VERY CAREFUL. THE SYRUP IS EXTREMELY HOT AT THIS STAGE.

Scoop fresh, clean snow (or crushed ice) into the shallow pan. Dip up a spoonful of syrup and dribble it onto the snow in "circles, and curlicues, and squiggledy things" as Laura and Mary did. It will harden and become candy. Lift the candy off the snow and onto a clean towel to dry.

Laura's Gingerbread

1 cup brown sugar blended with
1/2 cup lard or other shortening.
1 cup molasses mixed well with this.
2 teaspoons baking soda in 1 cup boiling water
(Be sure cup is full of water after foam is run off into cake mixture).
Mix all well.

To 3 cups of flour have added one teaspoon each of the following spices:
ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Sift all into cake mixture and mix well.
Add lastly 2 well-beaten eggs.
The mixture should be quite thin.
Bake in a moderate oven for thirty minutes.
Raisins and, or, candied fruit may be added and a chocolate frosting adds to the goodness.

Laura's Town Party Lemonade

You will need:
2/3 cup sugar
1 cup water
3 large lemons
3 cups cold water
Ice

2-cup measuring cup
Long-handled spoon
Sharp knife
Juicer (and, if juicer is slotted, a bowl to set it on)
Pitcher
6 glasses

Add the water to the sugar in the measuring cup; stir to dissolve. Set aside.

Roll the lemons on the counter with your palm a few times to make them juicier. Cut the lemons in half. Set the juicer over the bowl and squeeze as much of the juice out of the lemons as you can. If you have the kind of juicer with its own catch basin, be sure to remove any seeds. Pour the juice into the pitcher.

Stir the sugar water into the lemon juice, then add the cold water and stir. Taste the lemonade to see if it is sweet enough. Pour the lemonade over ice in six tall glasses to serve.

Laura's County Fair Custard Pie

You will need:
4 eggs
½ cup sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
1½ teaspoons vanilla
2½ cups milk, scalded (heated almost to boiling)

Measuring cup and spoons
Medium-sized bowl
Eggbeater or whisk
Wire rack
I unbaked 9" pie shell in a pie tin
Nutmeg

Preheat the oven to 475º.

Break the eggs into the bowl and beat them lightly. Mix in the sugar, salt, and vanilla. Slowly stir in the scalded milk. Pour the mixture into the unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Put the pie into the oven and bake it for 5 minutes at 475º. Turn the heat down to 425º and continue baking for about 12 more minutes, or until a knife stuck into the center comes out clean.

Take the pie out of the oven and cool it on the wire rack. If you are not going to eat the pie right away, put it in the refrigerator to chill. Store any leftover pieces in the refrigerator. (But if you like this pie as much as Almanzo did, you may not have any left!)

Laura's Hailstone Ice Cream

You will need:
1 quart heavy cream
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 gallon ice cubes
Rock salt

Measuring cup and spoons
Mixing bowl
Eggbeater or whisk
Large jar with a lid
Large pot or bowl (this must be deeper than the jar, and at least 6" larger in diameter)

Whip the heavy cream until it forms soft peaks. Add sugar and vanilla. Pour mixture into the jar, leaving at least 2-3" of air space for expansion after the mixture freezes. Put the lid on the jar and make sure it is tightly closed. Set the container into the pot or bowl and place ice cubes around it about halfway up. Sprinkle a layer of rock salt on top of the ice. Add more ice to within an inch of the top of the container. Sprinkle another layer of salt on top.

Twist the inner container back and forth, keeping the mixture moving as it freezes. You can rest for a few minutes at a time and then twist some more. Pour off the water as the ice melts, and add more ice to keep it high. Check the mixture after half an hour to see if it is thick enough to be ice cream. Spoon into dishes and serve.

New Autobiography by Melissa Gilbert473 giorni fa

NEW YORK, May 21, 2008 – Simon Spotlight Entertainment (SSE), an imprint of Simon & Schuster, announced today that it will publish a book by Melissa Gilbert. Best-known as Laura "half-pint" Ingalls on the series Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Gilbert has a permanent place in the hearts of women of all ages.

The currently-untitled book will feature behind-the-scene stories from her years on the Little House set as well as her time spent in Brat-Pack Hollywood, including her relationship with Rob Lowe (to whom she was engaged). Gilbert will discuss being an adopted child, the loss of her father at age 11, and her battle with both alcohol and failed relationships. But thanks to a great sense of humor, her resilience, and a fantastic support system, Gilbert has found happiness and stability in her life. Gilbert served as president of the Screen Actors Guild for two terms. She currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospice and and Palliative Care Coalition, where she works directly with chronically and terminally ill children to provide them with care and comfort. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Bruce Boxleitner.

Melissa Gilbert said "I am writing this book to share the story of my life. Simply put, I have been very blessed but I have also been through difficult struggles and painful tragedies. My hope is that people with similar life experiences will find comfort in my story by realizing they are not alone."

Jennifer Bergstrom, Vice President and Publisher of SSE, said "Melissa Gilbert is funny, down-to-earth, and has an entertaining and inspiring tale to tell. Most importantly, it will be told with Melissa's great humor and warmth. I adore her and think readers will too."

Jennifer Bergstrom at SSE negotiated the deal with Dan Strone, CEO of Trident Media Group, which includes world rights. The book is scheduled for publication in Spring 2009.

National Hospice Foundation Gala and Awards - "A Red Carpet Affair," Award Recipients: Melissa Gilbert, Mary Fisher, and the inaugural Art Buchwald Spirit Award Friday, April 11, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm Omni-Shoreham Hotel, Regency Ballroom, Washington, DC. Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls)

It was for her earnest, memorable portrayal of Laura that Gilbert became the youngest person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Gilbert has made a few feature film appearances, but the majority of her work has been in television. She most often opted for roles as suffering, historically significant teenagers, such as in The Miracle Worker in 1979, The Diary of Anne Frank in 1980, and Splendor in the Grass in 1981. She remained prolific and eventually graduated to adult roles, including Choices in 1986 and A Family of Strangers in 1993. In addition, there were a few failed series attempts, such as Little House: A New Beginning in 1982, Stand By Your Man in 1992, and Sweet Justice in 1994. In 2001, Gilbert was voted in as president of the Screen Actors Guild, winning a second two-year term in 2003.

During her teen years, Gilbert dated actors Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe. In 1988, she married actor and producer Bo Brinkman. They had one son, Dakota Paul (Cody), and later divorced. In 1995, she married actor Bruce Boxleitner. They have one son, Michael Garrett, born in 1995 and named after the late actor Michael Landon.

Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson)

She currently does charity work in addition to performance. She focuses on AIDS issues and on child abuse, speaking frequently for and lobbying with the group PROTECT. In 2004, she came out as an incest survivor on Larry King Live. Although she refused to name her attacker, she clarified that it was neither of her parents. She also revealed that the attacker was apprehended, but the courts were unable to prepare charges as the statute of limitations had run out.

Alison's father, Thor Arngrim, was a well-known Hollywood manager. Her mother, Norma MacMillan, was a well-known voice actress, who provided the voices for characters on Casper the Friendly Ghost, Gumby, Davey and Goliath, and many other beloved animated programs. Her brother Stefan Arngrim was also a child actor.

Alison married Robert Paul Schoonover, a musician on November 6, 1993. They live in Los Angeles.

Alison tied with Danielle Spencer ('Dee' on What's Happening!!) for "Character Most in Need of a Time-out" award on the 2006 TV Land Awards for her role on Little House on The Prairie.

In one of her stand-up routines, she described playing Nellie on Little House on The Prairie as "Like having PMS for seven years." On May 26, 2007 she made an appearance at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival signing autographs.

Karen Grassle (Caroline Ingalls~Ma)

Her first acting job in New York City was in the Gingham Tree, and she began calling herself “Gabriel Tree”. Using this name, she auditioned for the role of the mother, Caroline Ingalls, in Little House on the Prairie, and won the part against 47 other candidates. Michael Landon convinced her to revert to her birth name.

The series ran for nine seasons, from 1974 to 1983.

She was married to Leon Russom. In 1982, she married J. Allen Radford, and later Dr. Scott T. Sutherland in 1991. After the series ended, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where she remained active in theater. She would later become co-founder of Sante Fe’s Resource Theatre Company, also serving as the art director. Eventually, she moved back to California, where she lives with her daughter.

In 2006, she performed in Driving Miss Daisy in the starring role of Miss Daisy at the Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary Ingalls)

At eleven years of age, she won her role in Little House on the Prairie ahead of hundreds of competitors. She left the series in 1982, and she continued her acting in television shows, such as The Equalizer, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Murder, She Wrote.

She has been described as mild mannered and unpretentious, not unlike her Mary Ingalls character. Her first known romance was with actor Lorenzo Lamas, with whom she made an appearance in the film series The Love Boat in which two friends (Lorenzo and Melissa) resist the matchmaking efforts of their parents. After this short romance, she dated Frank Sinatra, Jr., who at the time was more than twice her age. She says, "It was fun, but never really wild. That's just not me."

She won an Emmy Award for her performance in Which Mother Is Mine?, an ABC Afternoon Special (1979). She secured a Spanish 'TP de Oro' Award for 'Best Foreign Actress' for her role on Little House on the Prairie (1980). She was the associate producer for the next to last TV project Michael Landon made before dying: Where Pigeons Go to Die (1990).

She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998, she was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Katherine MacGregor (Mrs Oleson)

She is best-known for her comic performance as Harriet Oleson from 1974 to 1983 on the NBC television series Little House on the Prairie.

Mrs. Oleson was at the same time both onerous and endearing to children and adults, alike, as audiences watched her character practice self-aggrandizement; usually to her own detriment. She will be remembered as one of the most talented supporting actors of her generation. After Little House on the Prairie, Katherine MacGregor withdrew from screen productions in favor of local theatre.

She was briefly married to actor Bert Remsen.

Richard Bull (Mr Oleson)

He is best known for his performance as Nels Oleson on the NBC TV series Little House on the Prairie which aired from 1974 to 1983.

Merlin Olsen (Jonathan Garvey)

Following his retirement as a player, Olsen went to television as a color commentator, teaming with Dick Enberg on NBC's coverage of the AFC throughout the 1980s.

He also enjoyed success as an actor. When Little House on the Prairie actor Victor French left to star in his own comedy "Carter Country" in 1977, Olsen was tapped to play Michael Landon's new sidekick Johnathon Garvey. A couple years later, Landon cast Olsen as the masquerading priest Father Murphy. He has been a commercial spokesman for FTD Florists. His most recent television acting work was in the short-lived 1988 TV series Aaron's Way, in which he played the lead role. Olsen has often co-hosted the Children's Miracle Network telethons, a humanitarian organization founded in 1983 by Marie Osmond and John Schneider. He also appears in many Sigma Chi promotional campaigns; Olsen is a Life Loyal Sig, Significant Sig (given to members for distinguishing acts outside the fraternity) and a member of the Order of Constantine (given for service to the Fraternity).

Olsen donated one of his cleats, which was bronzed, to be used during the annual football rivalry between two Las Vegas high schools, Eldorado High School and Chaparral High School, which both opened in 1973. Each year, Olsen presents the "trophy" in the ceremony at the rivalry game.

Linwood Boomer (Adam Kendall)

Linwood's first behind-the-scenes work was as writer and producer on the NBC series "Silver Spoons" (1985-86) and "Night Court" (1986-88) . After developing an adaptation of the popular British sci-fi comedy "Red Dwarf" for American television that disappointingly didn't get past the pilot stage, Boomer moved on to the relatively short-lived sitcoms "Flying Blind" (Fox, 1992-93) and "The Boys Are Back" (CBS, 1994-95), writing episodes for both and serving as executive consultant of the former and co-executive producer of the latter. In 1996 he was one of the executive producers of the hit NBC sitcom "3rd Rock From the Sun" and the failed ABC entry "Townies". While he also served in the same capacity for the edgy but controversial animated series "God, the Devil and Bob" (NBC, 2000), he found immediate success with the envelope-pushing Fox family comedy "Malcolm in the Middle" (2000- ). A mid season replacement, "Malcolm" quickly won an audience with its boldly realistic yet off-kilter comedy focused on a struggling middle-class family of six: high-strung disciplinarian mother Lois (Jane Kaczmarek); dim but well-meaning father Hal (Bryan Cranston); smart aleck eldest son Francis (Christopher Masterson) consigned to military school; bullying second-eldest son Reese (Justin Berfield), reluctant boy genius Malcolm (Frankie Muniz); and just plain weird youngest child Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan). The series steered clear of the traditional sitcom trappings as it was shot in a single-camera style, with no laugh track and with frequent fourth wall-breaking commentary by the title hero. "Malcolm in the Middle" set itself apart from its competitors with a fresh and consistently funny perspective and the remarkable performances by the entire cast. Perhaps this was in part because the show was loosely autobiographical for Boomer. Linwood continues to work behind the scenes on several tv show projects. He resides in Los Angeles.

Patrick Labyorteaux (Andy Garvey)

his well known TV roles are on the hit NBC series Little House on the Prairie as Andrew 'Andy' Garvey from 1977-1981, and on the CBS hit series JAG as Lt. Cmdr. Bud Roberts from 1995-2005. Near the end of the series Patrick Labyorteaux's character lost his leg, leading to speculation that the actor had in fact lost his leg, but the show's spokesperson, Diane Ekeblad, stated, “I’m happy to report Patrick Labyorteaux has not suffered any injury regarding his leg. He’s just a very good actor,”[1]

Patrick has starred in films; one of his well known roles is in the 1987 comedy film Summer School as football player Kevin Winchester. He also appeared in the 1989 cult film Heathers as mean jock Ram Sweeney.

Patrick has also done voices for cartoons like Spider-Man: The Animated Series and others.

Patrick is the brother of actor Matthew Laborteaux and actress Jane Laborteaux, and the son of Frances Marshall Laborteaux.

Patrick is married to actress Tina Albanese and they have a son together.

Some of the TV shows on which he has made guest appearances include Starsky and Hutch, 21 Jump Street, Living Single and Yes, Dear.

Bonnie Bartlett (Grace Snider Edwards)

Her acting career picked up considerably in the 1980s, including the miniseries V (TV series) and North and South: Part II.

Bartlett and husband William Daniels made Emmy Awards history in 1986 when they became the first real-life couple to win acting awards on the same night. They won for their portrayals of Dr. Mark and Mrs. Ellen Craig on the TV series St. Elsewhere. They later acted together again when she played a college dean in a season of Daniels' ABC series, Boy Meets World.

When St. Elsewhere ended in 1988, Bartlett's career moved to a wide variety of guest-starring appearances, including major roles on Wiseguy as a tough and corrupt matriarch of a sewage business, as Andrea Drey; Secretary General of the United Earth Oceans Organization (UEO) on seaQuest DSV, on Home Improvement as Lucille Taylor(Tim "The Tool-Man" Taylor's mother), and on ER (TV series) as Ruth Katherine Greene (Dr. Mark Greene's mother).

In the fall of 2000, she was an honoree at Moline High School in Moline, Illinois. Her plaque sits in a viewing window in the auditorium lobby at the school. Bartlett is an active member of Screen Actors Guild and currently serves on its National Board of Directors.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jason Bateman (James Cooper Ingalls)
Bateman began acting in 1981, playing James Cooper Ingalls in the television drama, Little House on the Prairie. He earned the status of teen idol in the mid-1980s in shows such as Silver Spoons, It's Your Move and The Hogan Family, and became the Directors Guild of America's youngest-ever director when he directed three episodes of The Hogan Family at the age of 18. After the series ended its run, his career slowed down for nearly a decade. During this period, he had major roles on four series — Simon, Chicago Sons, George & Leo and Some of My Best Friends — none of which lasted for longer than one season. In 2002, he landed the role as the frisky sibling of Thomas Jane's engaged character in the feature film The Sweetest Thing, and in 2003 his career made a major comeback with the role of Michael Bluth on the FOX television comedy Arrested Development.
More recently, he has appeared in Dodgeball as ESPN 8 ("The Ocho") commentator "Pepper Brooks", and in Starsky & Hutch as "Reese Feldman", Vince Vaughn's business partner. Bateman reunited with Vaughn in 2006's The Break-Up, and also did commentary on the 2004 Democratic National Convention for The Majority Report with Arrested Development co-star David Cross. In 2006, he appeared as a guest star on the sitcom Scrubs as Mr. Sutton, a garbage man who doesn't thank JD after being treated, and as former lawyer Rupert "Rip" Reed in Smokin' Aces. As of early 2007, he has completed filming The Kingdom and has roles in two films in post-production.
Bateman was awarded the Golden Globe in 2005 for "Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy" for his work on Arrested Development. He guest-hosted NBC's Saturday Night Live on February 12, 2005
