| Magazine and Giveaway!! | 146 giorni fa | |||
| Hi all! Well, I've been discussing this on the Lit Den forums, and we're hosting a raffle of sorts, a giveaway. It's very easy, for the fiction writers, journalists, poets, artists and photographers to be in with a shot at winning. Now, we can't afford to just hand out books like other people (although I do have a few I will probably be giving away at some stage). However, we have three copies of The Literary Den Book of New Fiction 2009 to give away to the public when it's released. As far as I know, this will be in the middle of July, or perhaps a little later. So here's how to win. Very easy, just submit to our magazine! Every submission, including those already made by members of the public, will be entered into a RANDOM draw to win one of the three books. All the money from the books goes to the Laura Crane Trust (reg. 1058464), based in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. So what to submit? We're accepting: articles relevant to the literary world, preferrably not something that will be old news very quickly; short stories in any genre, although if you're aiming for younger readers, please mention that; poems on any topic; comic strips which can be expected to continue through the magazine; artwork and photography that displays a message, or is a demonstration of real talent; writing tips, although it should be pointed out that we will be reading these, and if no one can see the point in what you're saying, it's likely it won't get in (general tips work best; the more experience you have, the better); book reviews of your favourite books, ever - any related to members of the Den are even better! When to submit? Right up to the release, and beyond. Although, unless there are huge delays, the competition will close the moment the book hits the proverbial bookshelf. Take it as being mid-July, but keep an eye on our Twitter to get the finalised date. Where to submit to? I will be accepting all magazine entries. Send them to literary_mania(at)yahoo(dot)ie with the subject line Magazine Submission on or before the closing date to be entered. All successful entries will be published in the magazine, though not all in the same issue, based on the number of submissions we get. This is a new magazine people, specifically for the public! Tell your friends! Note of word limits Short stories up to 3,000 words will be accepted. We would prefer a minimum of 1,500 words, although less than that may still be published. Articles and reviews must not exceed 1,500 words, unless the subject content is large; contact us in advance if you're not sure. Poems can be of any length, though poems of length greater than 80 lines may not be published. Comic strips may consist of 1-6 panels. If successful, expect further contact to arrange sequel comics. The Literary Den reserves the right not to publish work (although this doesn't happen a lot after we've said 'yes.') Please send in material in an editted form. The prize of three books may be subject to change, although such changes will be made public the moment they are final. Copyright remains with the author, although by submitting to the Literary Den, we reserve the right to publish your work elsewhere - note that the members of the Literary Den are not making a profit from the magazine or other sales. Any money the Den does acquire that is not related to the Laura Crane Trust will be used to further the promotion and development of the Den, and will not be split among the active parties of the Den. Also note that successful poets will be contacted to submit to the an Anthology of Poetry, editted by Elizabeth Dyer. Any further questions can be posted here, or emailed to me @ literary_mania(at)yahoo(dot)ie Thanks for reading, and good luck! | ||||

| Anthology 09 - how to get involved | 265 giorni fa | |||
| With the rising work in the Den and the fun we get out of it, we thought it only right to launch The Literary Den Book of New Fiction 2009! The book will be very much like the last - we'll be donating all the money to The Laura Crane Trust, while helping authors get their names out there. To get involved, you need to get on the forum. All the details will be posted up there as the project goes on, so it's the place to be. See our website for links to go to the forum homepage, or to Sign Up! http://literaryden.co.uk People who participate on the forum will be considered, if they're interested, for the 09 book. Don't just arrive and say something along the lines of "I'm John/Jane Doe, and I would like to be in the book!" Be active, talk to others in various threads. Trust me, it can be fun. The idea is that you get to know the people you write with, and your editors (who will be assigned based a rota). So what are you waiting for? (Also in 2009 - the launch of the Literary Den magazine - http://www.bebo.com/litdenmagazine - the campaign - see the forum for details - and a potential Poetry Anthology!!) | ||||

| Interview with a Vampire! | 272 giorni fa | |||
| Hey guys, Got some exciting news! Darren Shan, the proclaimed No. 1 Master of Horror, has agreed to participate in an e-interview with The Literary Den Magazine. We're very lucky to get this opportunity, and are, of course, going to use it to full advantage! We're offering you the chance to interview Mr Shan in this once-off interview for the Den. To qualify, all you have to do is submit a short story, under the genre Horror, to the Literary Den by March 11th. The judges are Andy Walker and Rachel Phipps, (our Master of Horror and Literary Editor respectively). If Andy and Rachel like particular stories enough, they may find their way into the magazine's first issue. Submit to literary_mania@yahoo.ie with the subject Horror-Shan (so I can avoid spam messages!) Best of Luck, Paul Carroll. | ||||

| The Literary Den Magazine | 319 giorni fa | |||
| Hello all! the Literary Den have launched a magazine, and we're currently looking for submissions for the first issue. All the details are here for written word entries. For visual entries (comics, photos and artwork) see the magazine's Bebo home: http://www.bebo.com/litdenmagazine Intro - Written by Paul Carroll or Christopher Coates-Morris - News from the Den - Book reviews - Two per issue (aproximately.) Amusing style not just a, "I thought this about the book... it were good." Describe the experience of reading the book, not just the book itself. No spoilers. 1000-2000 words each (aprox) - On the Bedside Table - Short, snappy reviews. Regular writers for this piece. The idea is to get through a couple of books every two months or so, roughly the aimed produciton period of the magazine. - Articles - relating to the Literary World. "Now these will be from "Literary Den Correspondents". Much like how "Newsround" has it's "press packers" I hope that as we grow we can have young people "15-25" who, if they have the writing skill can write interesting, amusing and informative articles, based loosely on the theme of the "literary world". I know that almost any of our 20 "regular forum contributors" are more than capable of producing articles like this. So i suggest that in the beginning it is one of "us" who writes them." - CM ["us" refers to the editting staff and immediate writers] - Short stories - Public submissions. No set word count, but obviously not too long (i.e. no longer than 10,000 words - subject to change). No set limit on number of stories yet. - Poetry Section - Same as above, but for poetry. Poetry Editor required - Tips - Short story ideas, as well as tips on how to overcome writer's block. Submitted by public. 500 word aprox - Comic Strip - Recurring comics, changing each issue. - Letters from members - As it sounds really... we'd need a couple from our regulars for the first few issues. ["regulars" being members frequently on the forums] - Last Word/Campaign News. - Written by one of the Editors. How to submit Naturally, we would need members to join the forums to actively discuss the articles with them. However, an article premise/synopsis can be sent to literary_mania@yahoo.ie Paul Carroll will deal with all corespondance. Poetry Editor apply through the same route [note: must have experience writing, reading and editting poetry] The current editting team Christopher Coates-Morris - Editor In Chief Rachel Phipps - Literary Editor Paul Carroll - Features Editor & Correspondance Anthea West - Comic Strip Editor Elizabeth Dyer - Poetry Editor Be aware that the editors will be selecting work from various people, and that work should already be of a high standard before submitting - we don't want to be correcting your spelling and grammar! | ||||

| Press release for The Forever Story | 454 giorni fa | |||
‘THE FOREVER STORY’ On the 30th of June, 2008 Nick Hornby wrote: “For the first nineteen years of his life, Johnny Razor wasn’t Johnny Razor at all. He was Malcolm Weatherly, and he was born in Mile End Underground station on the night of 17th September 1940.” These are the opening 35 words of The Forever Story. A story that will be written, not by one author, but many. It’s an innovative online concept that will be launched 4th August and will encourage people to contribute to the world’s longest collectively-written story. The more people who join in, the longer the story will be, and the more money will be raised for children who find it hard to join in; children with Autism. There are around 100,000 children with Autism in the UK, with around half a million family members directly affected by the condition. We want to raise awareness of the work Treehouse does to alleviate the often huge financial and emotional pressures associated with looking after a child with Autism and raise the much needed money so their work can continue. For every single contribution to the story via our website www.theforeverstory.co.uk <http://www.theforeverstory.co.uk/>, TalkTalk will donate £1 to Treehouse. We want to reach TalkTalk’s donation target of £50,000 and to do that we’d like people to have the opportunity to write alongside some of the world’s most well-known and respected writers. What we need from you? Just 35 or so words to continue our community-driven epic. The result of which will be more donations to Treehouse from TalkTalk. We already have the support of Nick Hornby who opens our story and more writers are poised to contribute. We’d love you to be amongst them. We’re gearing up now in preparation for the start of a story that everyone should be compelled to participate in. TalkTalk will be funding the development of www.theforeverstory.co.uk to encourage people to visit the website and submit their own words to the story. How to contribute to The Forever Story: If you would like to join The Forever Story please visit the website http://www.theforeverstory.co.uk We’ve no doubt that The Forever Story has the power to get people writing (and talking). We very much hope you can help us and Treehouse by taking part in it. For further information or assets for The Forever Story please contact Juliana Monk Juliana.monk@holler.co.uk or Kitti Gombos Kitti@holler.couk Holler Digital, 13-19 Vine Hill, London EC1R 5DW – Tel: 0207 209 2690. -END- | ||||

| Member update | 479 giorni fa | |||
| Right, I announced the newsletter a long while ago at this stage, but here we are again wondering if there are any more takers! We have changed our style in the past few months - we've gone email. So if you want to read the newsletter, simply send your name to literary_mania@yahoo.ie I'll send you back a confirmation email, and I promise only to send emails applying to the Literary Den, unless they are of absolute relevance to you. The competitions are not running as smoothly as we would like. In short, we need entries. The Create A Creature Contest ends (officially) on August 15th, but we may extend the deadline if there are people interested. PM me if you are. We may also extend the word limit if people prefer. Accepting public preferences on this one - think something else would fit - shout it out here! The newsletter already features a Book Brag, and reviews, but we're excluding a large part of out members. The poets! So here's what's changing! We're going to include a poem or two in the newsletter from now on by poets interested in getting out to the public! I would prefer to receive them in the form of an email (same email address for everything!), at which time I will sign you up for the newsletter if you aren't already. I'll work on a first-come-first-served basis. It can be a poem on anything - we're not picky. It doesn't even have to be new! And we won't stop you putting it anywhere else. Quite the opposite in fact! We're going to leave a link to your Bebo Poetry profile if you submit!! So what are you waiting for? | ||||

All of the books on this list were suggested by members, but I rearranged them into this order and format. Also, you might notice Madam Rowling is missing from this list.
