"jolly jangly guitar pop"

EP Review by e-music magazine672 dagen geleden

"Remember 18 Wheeler? No? Never mind, they've split up now and lead singer* Steve's busy with Astro Naughty, crafting jolly jangly guitar pop with melodies, high harmonies and slightly overloaded guitar solos. If that sounds a bit like the Wheeler's former labelmates Teenage Fanclub, wait till you hear the music - but for those awaiting a new album from Norman Blake and chums, Astro Naughty are a tasty hors d'oeuvres. 'Songbird' sums up the band from title to chrous ('All I ever asked of you was let the songbird fly'), while 'She Said' recovers from an almost disastrously overworded first line to climax in a chorus with more la's than Liverpool and a guitar solo straight out of Norman's knapsack. Plug in the portable player and turn it up loud. (5 stars, e-music top track)"

* Don't know where they got that from. Steve played guitar and did backing vocals in 18 Wheeler.

"Steve from the underrated Scottish trio 18 Wheeler hangs up the oversized rave pants and goes back to playing the Power Pop he was born to play. Visions of Teenage Fanclub, Whiteout, Superstar and Alex Chilton will swirl before you as you hear these songs for the first time. Where 18 Wheeler embraced all things West Coast, Astro Naughty come together to bring out a more Scottish-inspired sound in these songs mixed with leftover California adoration and harmonies that soar like seagulls over the Pacific. With musical hacks such as Ian Brown, Suggs, and those stony blokes who got fired from Spiritualized making dour appearances in the British music weeklies, it's refreshing to hear an obscure artist come back to deliver songs that are stronger than before. Hopefully Alan McGee or someone else with good taste will discover them once again."

"What can you say about this band that hasn't already been said before? References to Teenage Fanclub come all too easy when you listen to the happy-go-lucky jingle jangle pop sounds that Scottish band Astro Naughty perform.

Rising from the ashes of 18 Wheeler, Astro Naughty are a refreshing change from all the overpowered rock/dance crossover bands that trade under the "nu-metal" tag these days.

Astro Naughty have a CV most bands would kill for. Lead singer Steve spent 4 years with 18 Wheeler (who were signed to Creation) touring the UK, Europe and the Far East whilst drummer Gordon, bassist Dougie and lead guitarist Scott previously played together in The All Stars and Starsky.

Songbird is a prime example of the Glasgow sound most commonly associated with The Fannies "Bandwagonesque" phase, if only The Fannies had more "balls". From the very opening moment, you are convinced that you are going to like this band: crisp guitars, tight harmonies and a fucking catchy melody.

Kicking off with a Zeppelin influenced riff, She Said powers into more excellent songmastery. The vocals, as always, are strong and clear.

A fine, fine band with quality songs worthy of endless airplay."

"Once in a while there comes along a great band which is quietly confident about its abilities. Such a band is Astro Naughty.

This EP is a classic example of songwriting prowess. Kicking off with Outside, the band instantly tap into catchy, jangly guitar pop. The harmonies are spot on, and in an instant you know that these guys know their stuff.

Although the EP has been out for some time, the power behind these songs is still there and they sound as fresh as the day they were written.

Songbird is a true work of pop splendour: a beautiful, catchy little number which you are guaranteed to be singing along with after the first listen. She Said is another track close to reaching perfection. The Byrds were never this good.

Astro Naughty tip their hats to classic 90's indie-pop with Sleep Until Tomorrow however, they thankfully stay away from the baggy element. Think Teenage Fanclub with the volume turned up, and more energy and you will be somewhere close to the Astro Naughty sound.

A great EP, and well worth whatever the asking price is."

"A decade ago there was someone like Alan McGee who did everything to give new bands a speaker to the world throughout Creation Records. 18 Wheeler were one of them. A decade later everything has changed and independent seems to be a synonym of doing it yourself (and that is not romantic meant but told with truth). Also a decade later ex-18 Wheeler guitarist Steve forms Astro Naughty and "Songbird" is their latest EP. Is it the 18 Wheeler link, I don't know but Astro Naughty drives me back into the days in where independent were stars of the NME (and even Tony Blair meeting them hihihi…) as this is superb pop with an own sound. Compare them to Orange Juice, Teenage Fanclub, Carrie or any other guitarpopband and it makes sense just because Astro Naughty are superb guitarpop… Yeah, it makes me think of the day in where Louise Wener was singing about sales of the century, it just makes me hungry…superb pop!!!"
