Chiaro headlined, the first time I'd ever seen the band - and they surprised me more than somewhat. For a start, a good portion of the set dispalyed the instriumental prowess of the band, something I hadn't expected them to do, and there's no denying that this band rocks, with some searing guitar work and an undercurrent of keys/synth that provided an extra layer to the sound. Take the opener - in a blaze of electric guitar lead, the song surges into the vocal, the band producing and electrifying mix of raw aor and metallic rock with an indie-industrial twist, altogether a melting pot of styles that produces this loud and thunderous rock sound, remnding me very much of a mix of The Darknes and Muse with plenty of searing lead guitar along the way, above the roar of the engines. The second track opened with an almost Zeppelin-esque drum break as powerful lead guitar strides in and the song, instead of erupting, drops down into a flowing rock ballad. The vocal is strong, the harmonies equally so. The song then builds and erupts into a section where the vocalist reveals that he's really piling on the intensity rather than just singing the song. The band once again rocks and roars, the combination of high-flying guitars and textural unobtrusive synth swoops work their magic. The third track has a slow vocal/guitar intro before the guitar powers out, the rhythm section thunders, the synths are a bit lower in the mix, as the song drives forward - exceedingly forceful and that's what you take in as ther mix of song and the breaks which sheer off from it like mini musical avalanches. The fourth track was a slower, almost balaad-esque composition, which surprised me a bit and, in the context of the set, probably had its place. From there on, the band played an absolute belter of a set, with the songs and fiery instrumental breakouts showing that this band is really capable of delivering the goods.It shows me that this is a band you probably have to see a couple of times more to get into the songs and the way they are sung, but what they perform and how they perform it,is more than enough to make you want to do just that!
