| Dear all, There's still a few ball tickets left so if you're yet to buy one for the meal, or even just the ceilidh, there's one more chance. Come along to the first floor of the history dept this Wednesday (30 April) between 2 and 3pm and there'll be someone there flogging tickets for £25, as well as society branded clothing. Get your friends together and come along for the meal, or if funds are particularly low, the ceilidh only costs £7.50. It promises to be a good night, and the more people that attend, the better it'll be. Can't make 2-3 on Wednesday? Email history.society@gmail.com and we'll sort something else out. The End of Year Ball - Saturday 3 May - Copthorne Hotel - 7 for 7.30 start - smart dress. 3 course meal followed by ceilidh with the Broad Bay Ceilidh Band. Organised in conjunction with the Philosophy and Medical Sciences societies. The ceilidh should begin around 9pm. | ||||

| End of Year Ball / Clothing / Torcher Parade | 601 giorni fa | |||
| End of Year Ball tickets are going on sale next week. They're £25 each and that includes a three course meal followed by a ceilidh with the Broad Bay Ceilidh Band. The ball is has been organised in conjunction with the Philosophy and Medical Sciences societies and we hope to have well over a hundred people there. It's being held at the Copthorne Hotel on Saturday 3 May and begins at 7.30pm. Dress is smart (kilts, tuxes, dresses etc). Tickets are available from the first floor social area of the Crombie Annexe building between 1 and 2pm every day next week (21-25 April). The menu will be on show so you can select your meal option. A limited number of tickets for just the ceilidh are also available at £7.50 each. --------------- The clothing order that was placed before Easter is now in so if you're waiting for an item please come along and collect it when we're selling ball tickets next week. The earlier in the week the better so they don't have to be lugged around by committee members too much! We'll also be taking requests for one final order before the end of the term. See the price list below and order next week. --------------- The Torcher Parade is happening on Saturday 26 April and the society has booked a float with the theme, Monty Python's The Life of Brian. We need volunteers to help build it on the day and dress up in the evening for the parade. The more people the better. We had a great time last year and even ended up in the paper with our Bill & Ted's Historical Adventure float. Please contact Alasdair at u04ajp4@abdn.ac.uk if you're interested. --------------- It's coming towards the end of the year and we need to be thinking about a new committee for next year. Most of the current committee are 4th years so we'll be moving on soon. It's a great chance to meet people and have a laugh, not to mention the fact it looks good on the CV. There'll be an email about a meeting soon (it'll probably be after the ball), so see future emails. --------------- Society branded clothing To see photos, visit our Bebo page where I've set up an album with them in. | The date and venue for the history end of year ball has been confirmed as Saturday 3 May at the Copthorne Hotel (at 7.30pm). Tickets will be £25 each - you'll get a three course meal followed by a ceilidh(fiddly-diddly music). The ball is being organised in conjunction with the Philosophy Society and Medical Sciences Society, and we aim to have well over a hundred people there. So gather up your friends and look out for announcement soon after Easter letting you know where and when you can purchase tickets. Also, something else to think about over Easter - we'll be looking for a new committee to replace us (most of us are fourth years, and thus moving on into the real world). It's a good laugh, a good opportunity to meet new people and looks great on the CV. We'll be having a pub get together after the holidays, details of which can also be expected then too. | ||||

| Film Nights & Clothing | 650 giorni fa | |||
| First of all thanks to everyone who came to the talks we had with Dr Walker and Professor Frost in the last couple of weeks. Pub Golf was also a big success, although the morning after wasn't! We've got a couple of film nights left before Easter. Both are free of charge, all are welcome, and some refreshments will be provided. Tuesday 4 March - We'll be showing the 1994 Oscar-winning The Madness of King George at 7pm in KCF22. It stars Nigel Hawthorne, Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, Amanda Donohoe, Rupert Graves and Rupert Everett, and tells "the true story of George III's deteriorating mental health, and his equally declining relationship with his son, the Prince of Wales, particularly focusing on the period around the Regency Crisis of 1788." It also has a rating of 7.3 out of 10 on IMDB.com. Wednesday 12 March - We'll be showing the controversial 2006 film, The Wind That Shakes The Barley at 7pm in KCF22. It's set during the Irish War of Independence of 1919-21 and Civil War of 1922-3 and tells the story of two County Cork brothers, played by Cillian Murphy (of 28 Days Later and Batman Begins fame) and Pádraic Delaney, who join the IRA to fight for Irish independence from Great Britain. It won the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and has a rating of 7.7 out of 10 on IMDB.com. Society branded clothing We've also decided to expand our range of History Society clothing. Prices and colours available are below. To see photos, visit our Bebo page where I've set up an album with them in. If you want to order any of them, please come along to the first floor social area of the Crombie Annexe building between 2pm and 3pm on Thursday (the 6th) or the same time on Friday (the 7th). The order will go in on Friday evening, so act fast. Email history.society@gmail.com if you can't make those times, or are unable to send anyone along for you. | Political Cartoons / Scottish Migration / Pub Golf / Film Nights | 660 giorni fa | |||
| We've confirmed a few more events for the coming weeks which we hope you'll enjoy. All the events below are free of charge and anyone is welcome to come along to them. The more the merrier. Apologies to everyone who didn't hear from us last week - for some reason I never emailed the society mailing list, and just sent one to the department instead, so only people studying history will have heard about tonights lecture from Joyce Walker. Quite short notice then, but it should be an interesting talk, so please come along anyway. Tuesday 19 February (TONIGHT!) - An illustrated lecture from Dr Joyce Walker on 'Drawing from History: Political Cartoons as a Resource for Historians', in KCF22 at 7pm. That should be particularly useful for anyone looking to incorporate cartoons into essays and dissertations. Tuesday 26 February - Professor Robert Frost will be giving a talk on 'Scottish migration to Poland-Lithuania in the early modern period' at 7.30pm in KCF22. We all know about migration in the opposite direction in the modern day, but how different was it a few hundred years ago? Come along and find out. Wednesday 27 February - We'll be playing Pub Golf again, from 7.30pm (for an 8pm start) in the Union on Littlejohn Street. We'll move on to another 8 pubs after that before probably ending up in Exodus as usual. Feel free to come along, and bring friends if you want. There won't be any charge, and there'll be a prize for the winner and best dressed. The theme this time is the traditional pub golf theme of, well, golf. As a disclaimer I should mention that whilst the very concept of pub golf is grossly irresponsible, you do not have to take part if you do come along, and are under no obligation to drink anything you don't want to. Tuesday 4 March - The first of two film nights. We'll be showing the 1994 Oscar-winning The Madness of King George at 7pm (with the room tbc - expect that to be in next weeks email). Wednesday 12 March - We'll be showing the controversial 2006 film, The Wind That Shakes The Barley at 7pm (again with the room tbc). Next week I'll provide the room details for the films, as well as an opportunity to buy History Society hoodies again (as well as other branded goodies). | ||||

| It's taken us a bit of time after the exams but the history society has finally got some events confirmed for the coming weeks. More will follow shortly, but these will do for now. Tuesday 19 February - An illustrated lecture from Dr Joyce Walker on 'Political Cartoons as a Historical Resource', in KCF22 at 7pm. That should be particularly useful for anyone looking to incorporate cartoons into essays and dissertations. Wednesday 27 February - We'll be playing Pub Golf again, from 7.30pm (for an 8pm start) in the Union on Littlejohn Street. | Witchcraft / 300 / Night Out / Xmas Dinner | 745 giorni fa | |||
| Just a quick reminder this week for what the society has coming up before the end of term. * Tuesday 27 Nov - Dr. Bill Naphy is giving a lecture on 'Witchcraft in late 16th-century Aberdeen' at 7pm in NK14. * Thursday 29 Nov - We're showing 300 (that's the film based on a graphic novel, based on the Battle of Thermopylae) at 7.30pm in NK14. Bring your own popcorn. * Thursday 6 Dec - Society night out, beginning at the Union from 8pm. * Wednesday 12 Dec - Society Christmas Dinner at Henry's Bar Cafe. If you emailed us saying you wanted to go, we could do with your £10 deposit (or the whole £18.95 if you want) asap. Either give it to someone you know on the committee, come along to the Bobbin between 12 and 12.30 on Wednesday where we'll be having our weekly committee meeting anyway, or drop us an email and we'll sort something else out. We'll be back with even more events after Christmas - hopefully including trips away to Edinburgh and Culloden, more film nights, pub crawls, guest lectures, the Torcher Parade, and maybe even a pub quiz or two. | ||||

| CSA / Witchcraft Lecture / 300 / Pub | 756 giorni fa | |||
| Welcome to this weeks History Society newsletter. We've confirmed most of what we're doing for the rest of the term, and here's the details. -------------------------- Next Tuesday (20 Nov) we're going to be showing the 2004 satirical mockumentary 'CSA: The Confederate States of America' at 7.30pm in New Kings 14. This is what IMDB.com has to say on the subject. "Set in an contemporary alternative world where the Confederate States of America managed to win the American Civil War, a British film documentary examines the history of this nation. Beginning with its conquest of the northern states, the film covers the history of this state where racial enslavement became triumphant and the nation carried sinister designs of conquest. Interspersed throughout are various TV commercials of products of a virulent racist nature as well as public service announcements promoting this tyranny. Only at the end do you learn that there is less wholly imagined material in the film than you might suspect." It's quite controversial, and I'm told that if you're easily offended it might not be the film for you, but it's an interesting 'what-if' look at American history. Essential viewing for anyone with an interest in the civil war period. -------------------------- The following Tuesday (27 Nov) Dr. Bill Naphy is giving a lecture on 'Witchcraft in late 16th-century Aberdeen' at 7pm in NK14. He gave a talk on the subject last year and it was really well attended (probably the busiest event of the year), and promises to be a fascinating look at early modern paranoia. -------------------------- Two days after that (on Thursday 29 Nov) we'll be showing another film. 300 has been one of the blockbuster hits of 2007. It's even less historically accurate than Braveheart, but a rip-roaring re-telling of Leonidas and the 300 at Thermopylae. The special effects should benefit from being projected onto a big screen with large speakers. That's going to be in NK14 (again) at 7.30pm. We'll provide some soft drinks, but bring your own popcorn. All welcome. -------------------------- On Thursday 6 December we're having a 'Pub Meeting' at the Union from 8pm. We're not likely to do any work, it's really just an excuse to get drunk. Come along and meet other society members - it'll be fun. A club will probably be involved at some point too. My money's on Exodus, but who knows... | ||||

| Archiving Talk and CSA & 300 Film Nights | 763 giorni fa | |||
| Are you often stuck wondering what you're going to do with a history degree after university? Struggle to think of anything other than teaching? Well, we're endeavouring to help you out. We're lining up two talks over the next few weeks from people who have graduated from Aberdeen with history degrees and they'll talk about what they've done since graduating and what their current job now entails. Anna McCombie graduated from Aberdeen Uni with a history degree in 2005. Since then she's studied for a PhD at Glasgow and now works for Robert Gordon University as a Record Services Officer. This means she works with the university's archives and records, and uses the skills gained as a history student on a daily basis. It's not going to be a long lecture, just 15-20 minutes or so. It's also worth noting if you're in 1st or 2nd year and it doesn't seem that relevant to you just now, that you might well end up working with archives before leaving uni, so you could get a bit of a head start. It's going to take place in KCG5 on Tuesday 13 Nov at 7pm (that's next week). Refreshments will be available, and we'll do that traditional post-guest lecture thing of going to the St Machar Bar for a drink afterwards. The talk is open to anyone, not just history students or society members. ----------------------------- The following week (Tuesday 20 Nov) we're going to be showing the 2004 satirical mockumentary 'CSA: The Confederate States of America' at 7.30pm (room tbc - we're email that next week). This is what IMDB.com has to say on the subject. "Set in an contemporary alternative world where the Confederate States of America managed to win the American Civil War, a British film documentary examines the history of this nation. It's even less historically accurate than Braveheart, but a rip-roaring re-telling of Leonidas and the 300 at Thermopylae. The special effects should benefit from being projected onto a big screen with large speakers. We've not confirmed a time or room yet, but we'll get that to you next week as well. We'll provide some soft drinks, but bring your own popcorn. ------------------------------ If would like to order a hoodie, polo shirt or fleece, there's still time. Come along to the 1st floor social area in the history dept today between 1 and 2 and we can take your order. If you haven't got the funds just now, don't worry, we'll be putting another order in after Christmas. | ||||
