DVD... of our live performance at Vault 350 Longbeach CA 2007... the DVD is scheduled to be out 2008. Here's a sneak preview: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fusea... There is a picture of Katchafire on the World Reggae wall by New Zealand in the Smithsonian in the Midwest! ............... Press Release 2008 Reggae is one of the bloodlines of New Zealand music, and the all-Maori band Katchafire has become its foremost advocate today. A family affair from day one in 1997, founder and lead guitarist Grenville Bell and sons Logan (lead vocals) and Jordan (drums) remain the core of the band. Transcending their origins in a Hamilton garage as a cover band, Katchafire took their Marley-inspired original music to the bars and clubs, building up a fan base of thousands. Their exceptional debut album, the prophetically named Revival, sold in excess of 45,000 copies ( more than double platinum in New Zealand) and they scored massive hits with songs like Giddy Up, the nation's biggest selling single of 2002-3. After building on that success at home with the platinum follow-up "Slow Burning", Katchafire took a major step forward when New Zealand foreign exchange students Introduced their Kiwi reggae vibes to the fertile soil of the Hawaiian Islands. Underground popularity soon exploded onto the airwaves, and by the summer of 2006 Katchafire was topping the sales charts in the Aloha State and headlining at the 10,000 capacity Waikiki Shell. The past 2 years have found the boys giving their passports a considerable workout, from festival appearances all over Europe to increasingly successful mainland U.S. excursions. They now draw huge crowds all over the Pacific, from Australia to Guam and Saipan. On record, Katchafire reached a new level of musical depth and maturity on 2007's "Say What You're Thinking". With jazz, pop, rock and even hip-hop influences enhancing a solid roots foundation, they scored their greatest American chart success to date with a #6 showing on the Billboard Reggae chart. Katchafire is well-known for trading instruments among themselves during their marathon live shows. That versatility is demonstrated as never before on this album, with no less than five band contributing songs and sharing lead vocal duties. Front man Logan Bell contributes four tunes including the instant classic love song "Meant to Be". Jamey Ferguson contributes his unmistakable raspy leads on four more, including the thoughtful title track and gospel-tinged "Doesn't Anybody". Percussionist Leon Davey shows off his vocal skills on "Now Girl" and "Love Letter", as does drummer Jordan Bell on "J. Dubb" and keybooardist Haani Totorewa with "This World". 2008 is shaping up as a momentous year in the history of Katchafire. At home, in January they shared the stage with acts like Rage Against the Machine and Bjork at the Big Day Out Festival. In February they open for UB40 and Maxi Priest on the Raggamuffin tour of Australia. And March finds them launching another U.S. tour with showcase appearances at Austin's South By Southwest Music and Festival, including one at City Hall. With the musical evolution evident on their latest release, combined with their relentless tour schedule and phenomenal live shows, It looks like only a matter of time before the whole world is Katchafire country. Comments: "It’s a tribute to the global spread of reggae that a group like Katchafire can deliver such a great album in “Say What You're Thinking", with a depth of songs and cool musicality. Katchafire represents the best of reggae today, and it's out of New Zealand." Sunday 30th MARCH (Ratapu 31st NZ) A well deserved sleep in - laxed out all day - katchup on some washing - some went for a BBQ later in the arvo. .................. Saturday 29th MARCH (Rahoroi 30th NZ) Kia ora. We pretty much, hung around today... till the arvo till we drove to Santa Cruz ... we had to stick around the area till after the gig ... We were invited to a yatch club to sample prawn skewers... garlic bread and all the finest cuts of meat grilled till succulentcy... we accepted, ate then went to find the venue via GPS. Apparently alot of blues and all sorts of music happens at 'Moe's Alley'. There's a slight chill in the air a reminder that winter is still here but also making way for the (now) Spring season. Soundcheck took a while due to faulty leads but it got sorted. Over the next few hours we roam from the van to the green room (back of stage) till we start... a couple of shots before gig then i'm away. GIG - Although a small p.a it sure rocked the house. the Santa Cruz crowd was cool too, they were all grooving... we played 2 sets then finished up after 1am. Waited till the crowd subsided before we loaded the van then headed back to San Jose. The first gig in Santa Cruz... Mean Santa Cruz mean. ................. Friday 28th MARCH (Rahoroi 29h NZ) Had breakfast in a small diner somewhere - quick shop stop on the way back to Accom - The Avalon for sound check at 6pm - Accom to get ready - Green room at 10:45pm. ‘Native Element’ opened the night again pumping up the crowd. Once finished we jumped onstage, set up our gears. - Karakia - Showtime. The response we’ve been getting over here has been beyond expectation, it’s given us a lift as more and more people attend our gigs and sing our songs-spreading our ‘Aotearoa Roots’. The onstage sound was mint. vocals and instruments were crisp and clear. The show went well. encore was ‘meant to be’ - mix and mingle with the locals after the gig. A big kia ora to everyone who came out to the Avalon last night and partied with us, One love. ................. Thursday 27th MARCH (Ramere 28h NZ) Today we gently eased ourselves back into our music - lobby call at 3.30pm - A 1 hour drive up the highway to San Francisco follows. It feels like driving to Auckland... cruising along. We head to the famous ‘San Francisco Wharf’ for a calm chowder in a bread. We cross the road and watch a busker jamming on his sax. Head to soundcheck then chill in the green room till the gig starts... We amuse ourselves while the venue slowly packs up. 11pm arrives - Native elements finish their set (mean set brothers!). Karakia - gig: the crowd erupts as we step onto the stage. seems like they’ve been waiting for us to return. The on stage sound had it’s moments but eventually comes right... encore song was “who you with”. We ended the show - hung around in the green room with a few locals - loaded the van - drove back to San Jose - 3am back at hotel. ................. Wednesday 26th MARCH (Thursday 27th NZ) Today is wednesday and we are flying to San jose for the second part of the tour. 9:am lobby call, Missy, Sckimi and Anawa transported us to airport, They gave us authentic hand made Indian jewelry for farewell presents. We checked in our oversize bags,hahaha And got our boarding passes. We had an indian karakia which was neat to hear there language one last time before we said our farewells. Albuquerque to Pheonix 1 hour flight, There we sit in the plane wait for passengers to get off and then fly to san jose as a link flight well leon must have been still day dreaming of indian woman cause he walks off the plane thinking Pheonix is our stop. So logan gets off to tell leon and then the worst happens, We are ready to leave but no logan and leon on the plane so they have to katch the next flight to san jose. Moral of the story is, if you don’t now you know. Well we are meeting up with Jesse, the promoter for San Francisco. J DUB ............... Monday 24th MARCH (Turei 25th NZ) The Acoma people are located on top of a mesa.. We were given a tour and briefed on history... Alot of Western Movies were filmed there so you can kinda get a sense of what the environment looks and feels like except the misconceptions implanted by the silver screen; teepees, feathers, war paint etc can be thrown out the window.. this is the real deal. I’m running out of describing words but it was mean... and massive. We’re definitely privileged to experience all of this. It certainly does’nt feel like the hustle of modern metro America. Indigenous people with a similar plight as Maori and we’re proud to be exposed to this. the roots of America... now in confidence we can travel the States with the blessings of the Pueblo. ................ Sunday 23rd MARCH (Rahina 24th NZ) Easter was spent at another Indian Rez. The Jemez tribe. We entered the area weaving through houses some made from mudbrick others from stacco. We’re introduced to Juanita’s whanau. Juanita (who was MC at the star casino gig and has spent a bit of time in NZ too) is our guide today. In the distance we can here a drum and as we get nearer we see over 200 people performing and chanting in unison to the drum... an overwhelming sight and experience. No pictures of the performance were permitted. Is was all authentic, all custom... witnessing this with a back drop of mesa (those huge rock formations with a flat top) was priceless. After eating we were shown some sights and took countless amounts of photos then it was back to Juanita’s whanau house for the evening where we listened, sung and shared stories. ................ Saturday 22nd MARCH (Ratapu 23rd NZ) 1.30pm lobby call.... today’s mish is out past Santa Fe to a family house, a Pueblo whanau. Maxine’s whanau greeted us as we arrived. Pueblo hospitality, we felt at home straight away... Taking in the full cultural experience. We watched as the local youth entertained us with a ‘buffalo dance’ that was usually done around June. We sung a few acoustic numbers in return; ‘does’nt anyone - colour me and seriously. After a couple of hours we said our goodbyes and then drove home as the sun was setting... a day of culture in New Mexico. ................... Friday 21st MARCH (Rahoroi 22nd NZ) Checked out of ‘La Quinta’ at 1pm - Checked into the ‘Country Inn’ (next door) then to the museum again for a kai sampling some of Albuquerque’s finest Mexican food before spending a bit of time in ‘Grandma’s Music store’. Accom - Chill - Crash. .................. Thursday 20th MARCH (Fri 21st NZ) Most are up for Breakfast in the Lobby area before 9am - Logan has already been to a Radio Interview on a show called ‘Native America Calling’ a national talkback show. 2pm we take the backline to the Venue (Santa Ana Star Casino) - Soundcheck - Buffet in casino - Accom to get changed - Back to the venue. ‘Native Roots’ a reggae band who I’ve seen preform at the Hilly in H-Town opened the night. Karakia - Showtime. We performed on a huge stage with magnificent lighting and premium sound. The audience was of all ages and all were happy to skank along to the rythmn. We ended the show with ‘Who you with’ then took the time to sign autographs and meet alot of the locals. 1am - Back to accom - Unloaded backline then Denny’s for a feed, few laughs and reflect over the show. .................. Wednesday 19th MARCH (Thurs 20th NZ) 7.30am was the wake up call... but as usual we rock down to the lobby 30 minutes later. Austin Airport - Southwest Airlines - Albuquerque with a quick stopover at El Paso. Radio interview with Carol from ‘KUMN 89.9FM’ then to the local museum for a powhiri style welcome and a guided tour of the local Museum gaining info about history and tradition of the Pueblo people of New Mexico... also no cameras were permitted inside the Museum which made the experience that exclusive. Now we’re able to check into accom... Buffet dinner at furs (valentines styles), then home to roost. what a day. ................. Tuesday 18th MARCH (Wed 19th NZ) Kia ora, today..... Most of the band went to an outlet store while the rest hung out at ‘Days Inn’. The evening’s event consisted of dining out at ‘Pappito’s Cantina’ a Mexican Restaurant with a nasty menu. The quacamole and tortilas.. delicious. We also dined out with two ladies from the ‘Constituent Services’ Neocha and Jennifer, their company was very enjoyable. cheers... ..................... Monday 17th MARCH (Tues 18th NZ) Today we went to a radio interview on ‘Kazi 88.7FM’ with RJ a DJ and reggae musician and you can listen to the interview here: www.music4life.libsyn.com After that we then went to walmart for food and bits and pieces. Just got back from Mary Wilson’s place, for a BBQ and drinks.. good company, good times with local Austin hospitality. ................. Sunday 16th MARCH (Mon 17th NZ) Checked out of the ‘La quinta’ at 1pm today - checked into the ‘Days inn’ (few kms down the road) and we’re hanging out here till Wednesday... so it’s r’n’r time... .................. Saturday 15th MARCH (Sun 16th NZ) Still trying to fathom the fact that we’ve seen the great ‘Willie Nelson’ live in concert.. kinda reminds me of the time some of us went to see ‘George Benson’ play while in Noumea in 03. Anyway, today? just as cruisey.. we watched yesterday’s gig on DVD, and had a bit of laugh, and a bit of a cringe.. still, it looked good and sounded tight with some good grooves happening. Tonite is the last of our SXSW gigs.. held at ‘Flamingo Catina’ similiar in size as the ‘Bahama Hut’ in H-town. We took the stage after a local act called the 'Mau Mau Chaplains’ who has an outlook of cowboys but man, were they rootsy, solid. We opened up with ‘collie herb man’ and ended with ‘reggae revival’. The place was packed... a successful gig that captured new ears and i’m sure, new fans. ................. Friday 14th MARCH (Sat 15th NZ) Was a cruisey morning.... did’nt do too much, 3:30pm (10:30am NZ) was the call... the day was getting hot, and hotter. I did’nt know that we’ll be playing on an outdoor stage in the blistering sun. We carried our gears to the side of the stage - setup - cameras rolling. oh, forgot to say that we’ll be broadcasted live ‘on air’ to Austin’s Channel 6. After we’re introduced, Before going onstage, playing for an hour.... going through the hits; ‘giddy up’ - ‘who you with’ and rocked down to ‘rainbow’ - ‘call right up’. Omg, it was hot. dry, and every now and then a quick strong gush of wind will blow past, and from different directions... anyway, later that night we’re invited to attend country legend ‘Willie Nelson’s' concert. Countries finest only in Austin-Texas. ................. Thursday 13th MARCH (Fri 14th NZ) A skip and a jump to ihop again for breakfast while Jamey, Logan and Leon go to a T.V interview for TV3's 'Campbell Live'.. Waiting till 5pm to go to 'Brush Square'. We get there to a tent with a small p.a, that's how it is.... without any delay we setup side stage, waiting in anticipation as 'The Ruby Suns' play. Karakia - Once done were all into it, running behind schedule (not our fault) 15 minutes to do our thing, rushed it was.... hurry, hurry. We play, rootsy it was. Sinsemelia - Giddy Up - Love Letter. Rootsy as it was we did a good job establishing a tight groove and met a whole lot of cool people... and there it is, our first experience of South by South West. ................... Wednesday 12th MARCH (Thurs 13th NZ) A diner called ihop which is located outside the rooms is where we head for breakfast. Eating while waiting for the body to Katch up with the rest of Austin... Jet Lagged. Night time activities includes a bbq at a place called 'Rudys BBQ'.... a texan experience.. with some BIG steaks. Back to Accom to rest while a few of the boys head out to watch a blues band. ................. Tuesday 11th MARCH Alright.... off to the US again. this time (as you can see from our gig guide) we're heading to Austin Texas for the SXSW.... Meet at Hamilton and drive to Auckland International Airport for our 5.30pm check-in, ready for a 10hr 30minute flight. a couple of hundred movies later and a few naps we arrived in LAX to be greeted by 'Pacific Hawaiian Music Group' and close friends (pretty much family of Katchafire) Harry and Carole. We load our gears and wheel our trolleys to American Airlines, boarding at 6.35pm to Texas (not Te Teko) When we arrive and as we head down the escalator to collect our gears we can see numerous amounts of musicians and bands collecting their gears. it was a mean vibe, everyone playing at the SXSW, Seems exciting. Anyway, here we are 24hours later. (arriving the same day as we left: Tues 11th) Austin Texas... Found Accom at... La Quinta Inn... feed then out. Haani Totorewa ....................... Saturday 1st MARCH, MASSEY UNI Today we head over the Harbour Bridge to find and play Massey University.. but first we must find the Harbour bridge. After doing a couple of laps of Auckland city we head north over the bridge. Find Accom and settle in. We rock down to the venue at 4pm - SOUNDCHECK - ACCOM - Lobby call at 10pm. We jump into the van and drive across the road to the Uni. An ideal venue to play at, behind the building there’s an entrance to the lowerfloor which is where the green room (and drinks rider) is situated. An old skool Hamilton band ‘Ska Child’ ends their set. We katchup for a half an hour before we’re called onstage. 10:30pm KARAKIA - walk up stairs to the stage - GIG. Played to a lively crowd and our final gig for Orientation 08 so, thanks to the organisers and everyone in the picture above... next gig will be in AUSTIN TEXAS.. Yiii haaaa! Tuturu o whiti whakamaua kia tina! tina! haumi e, hui e! taiki e! Haani Totorewa ....................... Friday 29th FEBRUARY, Auckland Zoo Spending all day laxing out at the motel till 2pm. We head on down to the whare kararehe (zoo). Taking the backline, we set up in the fimiliar hexagon shaped gazeboo looking stage. Some of the Band was invited to take a look at the endangered frogs (ARCHY Frogs) which we learnt a great deal about. SOUNDCHECK - we head back to accom for the usual routine. Some opt to return to the Zoo at 6pm to Katch ‘House of Shem’, who played a killer set.. We setup - GIG. The gig was absolutely out of this world.. Sold out, 5,000’ish reggae fans came out to party not to mention all the animals in the Zoo skanking away. a family affair it was too... a good time had. fun in the summer sun... time to put the Hippo to nigh nighs as the night came to an end. Haani Totorewa ..................... Thursday 28th FEBRUARY Auckland Unitech Up in the morn, head to airport and fly to Auckland. once we disbark in Aucks we pick up our luggage from the carosole and instruments from the oversize pick up area. We pile everything into the van (and trailer). We look for the Auckland Unitech and it aslo going to be an early gig. we’re scheduled to play at 5pm after ‘the checks’. SOUNDCHECK - GIG - this gig rocked, some watching from the comfortable shoulder of their peers...tuturu whakamaua kia tina.. mean Unitech Mean... We head to the Motel and settle in for the night. Haani Totorewa ............................. Wednesday 27th FEBRUARY Christchurch university Another run of Orientation Week starts here in Christchurch. We flew down to a hot CHCHday, settling into the Motel for a couple of hours before rocking down to the venue for soundcheck. Soundcheck runs smooth. Tea in the green room - ACCOM - GIG. ‘Taos’ plays before us and we conversate and katchup over a few beers after our set (which is sounding quiet tight). We kick back in the green room and take a few photos with security who, by their generous hearts provided the brothers with a few fresh crayfish, fresh bread and butter which we delightfully scoffed down at 2am in the morning. Mean. Haani Totorewa .......................... Monday 25th FEBRUARY Bahama hut Hamilton Soundcheck at 5pm (just realised that this was our first proper soundcheck for weeks, possibly months). So there was a fair amount of time spent for refining the onstage sound. A home gig. Happy with the sound we headed home for tea.. back to the gig at 9pm... (humming kapahaka tunes from yesterday). ‘Sweet Echo’ opened up the gig and got the crowd rocking (again. big ups..). We repositioned our gears, karakia and played.... enjoying the onstage sound and the home crowd. Kia ora ano Kirikiriroa. Haani Totorewa ............................. Sunday 24th FEBRUARY, Tainui Kapahaka Tainui Kapahaka was held again at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek. It was good to catch up with whanau and absorb our beautiful culture and reo.We played after the last kapahaka group and jammed while being broadcasted onto big screens to an enjoyable crowd skanking on the grandstands. nga mihi ki nga roopu kua tohu kia haere ki te whakataetae-a-motu ki Tauranga Moana-a-tera tau Haani Totorewa ............................... RAGGAMUFFIN 2008: We 're away again on our little white van towing trailer, destination Rotorua, the Raggamuffin Festival 2008. THE POSITIVE: The roads of Rotorua were packed with hundreds of people making their way to the stadium all dressed for the hot weather, some dressed in festival colors representing the 'red, gold and green'... we stopped on the side of the road to pick up one passenger, Ara, he had our artist passes... we're are practically at a stand-still in the traffic so our driver ops to drive down the other side of the road towards oncoming traffic to our stage entry at gate 3 just 100 metres away, a bit of a risk but thankfully the oncomers saw who we were and let us through... We turn up 15mins before our stage performance, 'The Midnights' are onstage as we set up our gears backstage. It is our time...The crowd roared as we were introduced, we jam our set to a audience of thousands and set the mood for the afternoon... The bass player for 'Arrested Development' asks to use my bass guitar for their set, his 5-string bass had technical difficulties... we met and talked to other acts and muso's and the boys took a photo advantage with 'Maxi Priest'. Kicked back with a few beers and enjoyed listening to all the artists for the whole event. My pick of the day, 'The Wailers' and 'The Black Seeds'. We missed Kiwi's own 'House of Shem' whom i also wanted to see. THE NEGATIVE: A couple of things that caught my eyes and ears while strolling around the park... comments that the festival could have been more better organized with the refreshment stands, there were people saying they had been standing in cue for over an hour... complaints from people who payed extra for the so called allocated balchony seating felt they were ripped off because anyone and everyone sat anywhere, even in the seat the ticket buyer payed for, 'in that case it should have been one price ticket sales only' was one comment... something for the organizers to ponder on for next years 2009 ragga. All in all, an awesome peaceful day. WAKE UP: Yup... its that time again, a 3.00am wake up to head for the Auckland airport to depart for Australia. Everyone is amped and are buzzing about touring with these international artists. SYDNEY: Ragga Sydney... First show of aussie tour... Caught up with Pi 'Damn Native' and Sara and laxed out at Sara's til' our hotel rooms were ready, the guys play a few games of tennis on the Wii... At the venue for soundcheck: we sat in on 'The Wailers' soundcheck, there was alot of line checks and shouting going on from the band onstage to the monitor mixer man... Good turnout and great crowd support for us even though the organizers made a decision to cut back our stage time to a measly 30mins, half the people there were kiwi's... Met up with Josh and Lah at the venue... I finally got to meet the person who inspired me to play reggae bass, Aston 'Familyman' Barrett, of 'The Wailers' and a humble person he is, i grab a photo oppertunity with him... Extra gig at bondi beach road hotel with reggae band 'Red Eyes', the place was packed... 1hr set to a good turn out... 'Red Eyes' were awesome and rootsie, the lead singer and bassplayer hung-out with us in our greenroom after the show. PERTH: Ragga perf... Best ragga food catering yet... Heaps of kiwi support, Jordy feeling ill so we were a man down, Leon jumps on drums and pulls it off (nice one bro)... The stage crew have a bit of a moan because they now have to pack away Leons gear for he wont be using them, 'well its your job man, just do it!' one of the stage managers yells to his crew... onstage for a short 30min set but we pump it out hard... on our way to the catering we bump into 'Arrested Development' the ladies in the band were singing our tune 'Seriously', apparently they had a copy of the dub version of the song and loved it... lead singer of 'Arrested Development' impressed with our performance and asks for our contact number... 'Arrested Development' are a very friendly group and always smiling... Kiwi's John and Bronwyn good hosts at accom (thanks). ADELAIDE: Lay over in Adelaide for 2 days... Great weather friendly people, the people there are the most approachable aussies i've ever met... boys went shopping and to the beach... Accom a lil rootsie... everyone aware of the tree snakes. MELBOURNE: Melbourne ragga... Jordy still under so Leon steps in to fill his role again (well done bro)... Accom is four to an appartment room but comfy; hotel is centre of Melbourne, punt hotel on flinders, parking sucked for there was a $25 per night charge just for our trailer... we meet up with some whanau and chat a bit about our tour with these big artists. A quick soundcheck then the boys scatter in all directions...I meet up with 'Fams' Familyman back stage and we chat about our bass gear we use... Heaps of kiwi's turned up for our short set and chant us on, we change our setlist and play older tunes that are more familiar to the people, the crowd sings along... As usual all the artists kick ass and the night runs smoothly... 'Arrested Development' are opening up and really getting talkative with the boys now aswell as members from 'The Wailers' and 'Maxi Priest' but as usual, UB40 were always absent until their stage time, i think it was their managements decision to lock them away from the rest of us folk, you know... The bass player for 'Arrested Development' thanks me again for the use of my bass in Rotovegas. Melbourne 13th Feb... Checkout of Hotel and make our way to the airport... Logan has been our tour manager while Jordy was ill, he does a great job in arranging our transportation and accom details aswell as navigating/driving us around (mean brutha mean)... Flight cancelled, second time this has happened to us here in Melbourne and ONLY Melbourne... DJ331 at 4pm... 4hrs wait next flight to brizzy... Flight delayed yet another 30mins... New motto for the airline 'fly virgin blue, at least you'll get there'... And to top it off we are made to sit and wait onboard an extra 15mins for them to sort out some luggage that's not meant to be onboard... 'virgin blue, we'll put your luggage on the wrong plane, delay and cancel your flight, but at least you'll get there' LOL... No spare seats this round. BRISBANE: 5.30 wed Feb. 13th... Apparently a 1hr 45min flight to brizzy... Weather looks good... Paul and Andrea meet us at the airport and lead us to our Hotel... Awesome hosts put on a massive kai for the boys, steamed hangi, bacon and egg pie, sea food salad and deserts... Accom very cool and private. Final show of raggamuffin in Brisbane... Full force again so it will be a relaxing gig... Jordy feeling heaps better after a few days rest and the guys are hyped to wang out this last ragga performance... NO sound check as the production manager rang Logan to let us know that things were a bit of a mess onstage, one of the trusses that holds the lighting up buckled and gave way, luckily no one was hurt and none of the artists gears were damaged... started our set with collie herb and pumped out our 30min set to a great crowd, awesome response... Finished our set with reggae revival then the night went on as normal with acts UB40, wailers, maxi priest and arrested development... the crowd roared as Katchafire were called onstage by Maxi Priest to join in with the rest of the artists to jam a Bob Marley cover 'I shot the sheriff', it was the perfect photo oppertunity and a most memorable moment. TOUR COMPLETE: 16/02/08... Checkout of our hotel at 6.30am departure for Auckland about 9.00am flight DJ186, arrive NZ 3.00pm... We say our farewells to our friends and new friends and board our plane... The staff on Pacific Blue were the friendliest i've seen, the female crew ask to have a photo taken with the boys, we say yes and we all cram up in the service area of the plane to pose for photos... a sigh of relief overcomes Haani, he's seated next to me on the plane and he's anxious to see his daughter, we're all keen to see our whanau again but before we get to rest, its straight from the Auckland airport to a performance at the Soundsplash in Raglan. Raggamuffin Rotorua NZ 2008... 35,000+ crowd... First ever NZ raggamuffin... All the international acts call it their best and finest concert in years... biggest and best ragga to date... big news in Aus... way to represent Aotearoa. Katchafire would like to thank everyone involved in making the Raggamuffin 2008 Tour a success, the organizers, the artists, the production team, the caterers and the accomodation, but mostly, we have the biggest and highest respect and thanks to our whanau, all our fans and all our supporters. Well done bruthas for all your effort and strength in make this tour a complete and smooth success. Bless Tere ... Later that same day, Raglan Soundsplash From a huge night in Brisbane we head back to Aotearoa to play at Raglan’s “Soundsplash Festival” a gig that has become, a sort of tradition to play at having played at every one, anyway we end up getting into Hamilton around 6pm. The call is to ‘meet backstage at 8pm’ which means we could get an hour or so with the whanau (who we have’nt seen for the last 2weeks). We make our own way out to Whaingaroa and assemble backstage. We start our gig, we give thanks and play comfortably. Nga mihi ki nga Festival Organisers Brian raua ko Naiomi from Motherland Collective for another mean year. Haani Totorewa ....................................... ........... Friday 25th JANUARY 2008 Tasmania Soundscape Festival. Meet in Hamilton to leave at 4:30am....... yes, 4:30am.. AM Flight 1 NZ123 Depart Auckland Arrive Melbourne Flight 2 (originally cancelled due to 'technical difficulties') to Hobart. Depart Melbourne 12:50 Arrive Hobart 14:00 We head to Accom, settle in, Grab a feed at a local then back to Accom for the night. Saturday 26th JANUARY 2008 'Soundscape' is the name of this festival. Friendly as folk in the Tazzy. The organisation was excellent.. everything seemed to flow, band after band, two stages, shuttling bands to and from the venue from hotels.. etc.. organisation was great. We had an easy time setting up onstage and relaxed while we did the ritual line check. A 60 minute gig came next. The onstage mix was mean. There were also cameras that projected our set onto a huge screen so that thousands may get the opportunity to view and hear our show from afar. Satisfied, we ended the gig with 'Reggae Revival'... oh yeah, we also had time to see the 'Red Eyes' and 'Blue King Brown' mean inspiration, thanks. Sunday 27th JANUARY 2008 Have a bit of a roam around Hobart City looking for some 'eggs benny' at a cafe. We head down to the venue and have a yarn to some of the festival's organisers.. shake hands and wave goodbye. Cheers to Joe for a mean gig!. We head to the Airport, back to Aotearoa. Flight 1. Depart: Auckland 1:00am Arrive: Hamilton 2:30am Ch'cher... Tuturu o whiti whakamaua kia tina! tina! haumi e, hui e! taiki e! Haani Totorewa ...................... FRIDAY 19th JANUARY 2008 Big Day Out As usual everyone meets in Hamilton, load the gear into our van and little trailer, the rental company still wont give us a van with windows due to a "who broke the van door window?" accident incident... deadline departure time 2pm destination "The Big Day Out" ... two stops on the way, one in Ngaruawahia and one in Huntly. The traffic gets a little heavy around that time so it will be a slow trip through the auckland motorway to Mt.Smart stadium. Big Day Out has been around for a few years now since the 90's and this event will be no different from the others, heaps of people, great bands and extreme heat. After a few stadium drive-bys and random directions thrown from our van load of backseat drivers, we finally stop and ask the info desk for directions to our stage gate... we arrive 4hrs early and collect our wrist passes from a backstage co-ordinater, Gee negotiates the tent ropes which are streamed everywhere and parks our van in a shaded area, we unhook our trailer and roll it under the stage for storage. The first person that meets us is Che Fu, a hongi round with the boys and a quick korero as he is sceduled to perform with Supergroove at 10.30pm then off he goes and thats a last we see of him. Some of us meet up with friends and musicians backstage while others indulge in the free BBQ goin on in the food tent. A few screaming fans coming from the other side of the fence "Raggamuffin Yeeah!!!, we got our tickets bruthas!!!" were returned with a friendly wave from the boys. The guys all take off in different directions to wander through the heat and the massive crowd of sticky sweaty bodies only to return soon after with comments that "its too hot out there". The hours pass and we all start getting anxious to jump on stage, we're set to perform after "Dam Native" at 9.00pm... we can hear "Scribe" goin hard in the distant who had his audience wrapped around his finger, they were loud and involved and his performance was great. Its 8.00pm and a few of the boys wander back to our van, they've just been to catch a bit of "Bjork" doin her thing, we finally get to move our gear from our trailer to backstage access ramp... Leon and Jordy get to setting up their percussive instruments, Jamey warms up on the saxophone, Haani and Logan warm their vocals while i wander about setting up my bass rig to roll onstage, Gee sits at stageside while struming his guitar. Its our turn now so we all quickly place our gear onstage ignoring the cheers from the crowd... plugin, switch on, line check, ready to go but wait... calls for a karakia from Logan standing on the opposite side of the stage... off we go, karakia. We start our set with a track from the album "Now Girl" and run a change into "Sensimelia"... a short pause for Logan to acknowledge the audience and give thanks for their support... knowing that "Rage Against The Machine" was performing same time as us we we're supprised to see so many supporters gathered to watch our show, we went hard and the crowd got bigger to where there were bodies even standing outside the designated area cheering us on. We were supprised to see "Tiki Tane" former "Salmonella Dub" skankin' away just to my left behind me, the smile on his face showing he was enjoying our set. People with camera's clicking away and the involvement of the audience was indeed a cool vibe with cheers that eventually turned our set into an audience sing-a-long event... we ended our night on a high with the tune "Reggae Revival". We did our thing now its time to pack down and load our trailer and head back to Hamilton but before that, a cold beer... we're greeted by friends and fans and theres a Korean girl backstage talking to Logan... a big fan of Katchafire, we pose for a photo with her and all sign the back of her singlet, we can hear "Che Fu and Super Groove" pumping out the sounds in the night... we do our farewells and pile into the van for the drive home. Big aroha to everyone that supported us and we hope that you enjoyed our show as much as we did performing. Bless Tere .................... SATURDAY 12th JANUARY 2008 Parihaka Peace Festival Our Agenda says that we have to meet in Hamilton at 10am, Saturday.. This week... Parihaka. Here we go again, white van and trailer... four or so hours drive from Hamilton. After checking into Accom we head to 'Festival of Peace' i Parihaka. The festival has been going now for 3 years.. and we've rocked them all.... and it was mean to be going back to Parihaka and feel the good vibes and messages of peace and aroha. So, using the'e-ticket' that we were given from organisers a week earlier we collected our wrist and artist passes at the entrance of the festival.. we drive through the car and camping area then continued toward the right hand side of the stage. Eyes looking at the smoke from the continuous hangi pits while hundreds of people listen to music play over the front house speakers. The stage crew clear and prepare the stage for the next act. Ddub had just finished their set and the Opensouls will be next. We're on after them. We drive the van behind the stage and unhook the trailer. Take a few minutes checking out the stage before taking advantage of the vegatarian cuisine. For the next hour we listened Open Souls and chatted to the organisers and helpers of the festival.. the call came from stage crew that it was our time... So, we set up... the time was limited and we felt a bit rushed... so having the dream monitor mix would be hard to achieve. We lined checked everything then went outside to karakia then straight on with 'Now Girl - Sensimelia - Say what You're Thinking... etc' The monitor mix did come halfway through the set and it felt way better when it did.... we gelled.. and sailed through another set... we ended after 'Reggae Revival' on a high, amping.... and even wanted to play another song or 3. The crowd was urging us on with calls of 'encore'. But we only had had 60minutes to play, so we had to pull the plug ... aahh well... We exited stage left. and put our gears in the trailer... Then kicked back and enjoyed the soulful sounds of 'Hollie Smith'. Leaving the festival after midnite, back to New Plymouth Accom. Much respect to the organisers of the festival and everyone who enjoyed our set as much as we did. Peace and Aroha. Haani Totorewa | |||

| About the band | Il y a 1090 jours | ||
| Reggae is one of the bloodlines of New Zealand music -- which accounts for the extraordinary success of Hamilton’s Katchafire who, two years ago, emerged as the hardest working band in the country. Their astonishing debut album, the prophetically named Revival, sold in excess of 30,000 copies (double platinum) and they scored massive hits with songs like Giddy Up, the biggest selling single of 2002. Katchafire had tapped into that bloodline of New Zealand and people, being reacquainted with what they had lost, loved it all over again. Katchafire’s music was uplifting and celebratory, and their gigs were joyous singalong affairs where people of all cultures and affiliations were welcomed. Their audiences are still the most cross-cultural, cross-generational in the country. Katchafire were, and remain, unique in New Zealand music. They are a viable, touring eight-piece band which can work the length of the country without exhausting the place. They can return to a venue they played just a few months before and pack it out all over again. That is rare for any band. The success of the band was evident in album sales, opening shows for the likes of Michael Franti and Spearhead, gigs all across the country (three in one day on Waitangi Day 2004, in Hamilton, Manukau and Nelson), three tours to Australia and New Caledonia, and most recently a stadium-filling headlining show in Fiji. And now they are stepping up again with a cracking new album Slow-Burning which shows them reaching a new level. From the terrific cover slip -- a cheeky homage to the classic Bob Marley album sleeve from which the band took its name -- to the eleven diverse tracks within Slow-Burning is a leap forward, both musically and lyrically. The title is again appropriate; you will feel the fire from this for a long time to come. Produced by Chris Macro (of Dubious Brothers) and with international guests, this is a new level of consciousness music from Katchafire which moves effortlessly from classic JA-sounding roots-reggae to material which could be located nowhere else other than in Aotearoa: when they say “don’t frisk me down because of my brown skin” they also bring dignity to bear, “we must hold our head up high”. The deeply felt and fiery I And I stands proudly in the local lineage of politicised reggae that was kick-started by Herbs. More than on their debut they pull in threads of dub and toasting, there are musical references to the sound of classic Trojan records (Close Your Eyes, Hey Girl Version) but, courtesy of the French horn section Mister Gang whom they met in New Caledonia, you can also hear echoes of DD Smash-styled pop. And on Rude Girl, with toasting by Tuff Enchant, the band open with a tricky rhythm and a nod to the music of Cuba. However Katchafire haven’t sacrificed their pop sensibilities and songs like Hey Girl, I Got Ya Back and Close Your Eyes should be all over radio this, and every, summer. With Slow-Burning, Katchafire have fulfilled the promise of their debut that here was a band schooled in roots reggae, which has honed its professionalism on the road, and has within its ranks songwriters who can take their place alongside the best Aotearoa has had to offer. Katchafire shows are always celebratory affairs and with Slow-Burning the band have even more to be joyous to be about. Be prepared to celebrate with them. | |||
