| Dissapointment, the Bugatti Veyron. | 359 Tage her | |||
| As you all know last week the Veyron went around the Top Gear test track, after waiting 2 years! Shock and horror it was in 4th place, being beaten by the Gumpert, Ascari and Koenigsegg. Only then to be trounced by the Pagani Zonda F Roadster.. so what went wrong? My personal belief is that they Veyron's weight attributed its slowness, its a hefty 2,000 kg! And also the fact that it took so long to get onto the track, 2 years in-fact. If it would have been on the track instantly it could have been the leader, but ah well! | ||||

| The History of Top Gear | 380 Tage her | |||
| Top Gear was launched in 1977; it was a 30 minute program that was produced by BBC Birmingham. The 3 original presenters were Angela Rippon, Noel Edmonds, and William Woollard. Later on Jeremy Clarkson joined Top Gear through making a "test" documentary about the Citroen 2CV; sadly that video is lost and cannot be found in the BBC's archive. Also, other famous names such as Tiff (Timothy) Needell, Chris Goffey and Tony Mason. The theme song used for Top Gear throughout its whole life is Jessica by the Allman Brothers. In 1988, views went through the roof as Jeremy joined Top Gear, it became much more humorous, then Vicki Butler-Henderson joined in 1997, the second female presenter of Top Gear to date, after Michele Newman. Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear in 1999 to make other shows such as "Clarkson's Car Years" and "Jeremy Clarkson's Motorworld" which weren't that good. But, thanks to this, the views rolled down from 6 million to under 3 million, so, to replace him, James May came in, so it wasn’t in "new" Top Gear that he was first introduced to Top Gear, James reviewed cars such as the Rover 75 and Lexus IS etc, and after his departure, 2 presenters remain, Quentin Wilson and Kate Humble, the 3rd one, Brendan Coogan, left because of conviction of drink driving. But, because of low viewing figures in 2001, the program was cancelled. After this, everyone retired to Fifth Gear, wanted to be called Top Gear, but the BBC still made the Top Gear magazine. This Top Gear is now known as "Old Top Gear", since it wasn't studio based and was only 30 minutes long. Only a year after Old Top Gear was axed, 2002 was the year for today's Top Gear, and hour long studio based program. The theme tune stayed the same, and 2 new presenters joined Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and Jason Dawe, who was replaced by James May in the second series. And, not to forget, The Stig joined Top Gear as their Test Driver. Also, new features were added, the track for instance, then the Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car, Car News, Cool Wall, and Power Laps. At first, the tickets for Top Gear were free for the 400 people who applied per show. But, during the filming of series 8, the crash happened, making a huge delay. Also, in series 7, the Top Gear Dog, a Labradoodle, joined, but was lazy and was, ironically, car sick. Then for Red Nose Day, Top Gear of the Pops followed the demise of Top of the Pops, and was the only Top Gear episode ever to be shown live on air. The next series will start in October 2007, people say it would return in the summer, but, Top Gear need 4 months of filming to make enough material to create a 6 episode series. But, their biggest viewing where 8 million, BBC 2's biggest in 10 years, bigger than the Big Brother Finale (after the racist happenings). In November 2005, Top Gear won an international Emmy in the non-scripted entertainment category. But, Jeremy Clarkson also made a lot of bad comments, i.e., a sat nav from Germany, that only leads to Poland, and has managed to create and Anti-Clarkson campaign, and there is now a petition on the Downing Street website, until April 2008, that Jeremy Clarkson should be the next Prime Minister. The Stig, black Stig known as Perry McCarthy, who was killed off in a stunt with the HMS Invincible, but wasn’t "killed", just an excuse for him to leave. We now have the White Stig, who is much quicker around the track, i.e., Black Stig went around in the Liana in 1; 46 and White Stig went around in 1:44.4. Then, Big Stig was featured in the American Show of Top Gear. So that’s the history up to now, thanks for reading. Info from Wikipedia, Written by Llyr Owen Jones | ||||

| New face-lift for the Aston Martin DB9....why? Aston Martin doesn't actually need to face-lift the DB9. It's got its own fridge on the Cool Wall, it's still selling well and the whole world knows it's stunningly good-looking. Aston is well aware of this, so the new DB9 looks all-but identical to the last one. (For the anoraks among you, the big news is that the grille has lost a single horizontal bar. Oh, and the wing mirrors are now the same designs those on the DBS.) It's some tribute to the original design that, after four years of sales, this car still looks bang up to date. But perhaps that has as much to do with the other cars in the range looking very similar - if none of them advances the design language, none of them looks old hat. But there were some areas that needed attention. Similar to the Vanquish before it, the DB9's interior simply had too much of a parts-bin feel. Not now. The fascia from the DBS has been carried over - with a slightly different finish. Gone is the old confusing layout with its myriad buttons, replaced by a simple design that makes it much easier to do everything from work your phone to change a track on your iPod. You even get a proper vanity mirror now, with its own slidey cover, and not a Ford parts-bin glue-on job. So, bits that needed leaving alone have been left, others have been changed - from this point of view, the DB9 is a big step forward. But unlike the V8 Vantage that Tom Ford has driven, the rest of the experience hasn't been tweaked to where I'd like it. First, the good news - the Touchtronic transmission has been fine-tuned to give smoother shifts. The old one hindered your progress sometimes because it was a bit clunky, but up- and down-shifts are now much slicker. On the way down, you get a small blip of the throttle (nothing new there), but the more purposeful way it does it is new and better. No wishy-washy hesitation here - you want a gear, you get it. 'It's some tribute to the original design that, after four years of sales, this car still looks bang up to date' But everywhere else left me feeling a touch disappointed. Aston is keen to trumpet the extra power you get from the engine, and, sure, 20bhp and 22lb ft aren't to be sniffed at, but when the old DB9 had 450bhp, the differences are, in reality, quite small. The DB9 was a very fast car; now it's a very fast car. It's just a shame this tweak hasn't come with a slightly more hardcore exhaust note - I reckon you'll notice the transmission whine more than the engine. But the biggest disappointment for me is the chassis. Although this DB9 now has new Bilstein dampers which have resulted in a bit of extra give in the chassis and ride quality, the dynamic problems the DB9 had have still not been resolved. OK, so as a GT, the DB9 performs beautifully, but if you want to ask a bit more of it - go for a drive rather than a cruise - then there are other cars out there, other Astons, that will reward you more. Get a mid-corner bump, when you're gunning it and the rear suspension is loaded up, and you get this strange rolling effect from the back end. I drove a Sports Pack car a while ago, and the revised spring rates and lower unsprung mass cured this. I was hoping that the face-lift would've done the same thing, but it seems you've still got to specify that option if you want the best-handling DB9. Which is a shame, because it takes the shine off what is otherwise a much improved car, and one which now has the interior to match the price tag. Aston has listened to the critics to give a much improved V8 Vantage, but it could have done with listening a bit more... | ||||

| Hammond Vs Skater It was always going to be a close fight, but Hammond had two things on his side. Firstly, the small matter of 572bhp. And secondly, the hope his adversaries would get distracted by some chalet girls and waste half an hour demonstrating how sensitive they are by running through Jack Johnson songs on their iPods. http://www.topgear.com/content/news/... | ||||

| F1 Richard Hammond It could be “hello Richard Hammond” and “goodbye Gary Lineker” after a dramatic day during which broadcasters battled for Britain’s most popular sports rights. Hammond, the Top Gear presenter who survived a high-speed crash, is in pole position to become the face of Formula One after the BBC reclaimed the sport in a £200 million deal. In a surprise move, ITV dumped Formula One after 12 years, claiming that it was not commercially viable despite the emergence of Lewis Hamilton as a British contender for the world championship. Coverage will be influenced by the success of the Jeremy Clarkson-fronted Top Gear when the five-year deal begins next year. Dominic Coles, BBC director of sport rights, said: “When Lewis Hamilton did a test lap on Top Gear it got more viewers than the Brazilian Grand Prix. Bernie was very impressed with the Top Gear proposition and there will be cross-fertilisation between the show and the races.” Clarkson and James May, Hammond’s co-conspirators, will also join in the grand prix fun but insiders believe “The Hamster” has a special affinity with drivers after his crash. | ||||

| UK company announces electric supercar Independent British manufacturer the Lightning Car Company has announced an all-electric supercar. The Lightning GT boasts 700-plus bhp, 0-60mph in under 4sec and a top speed of over 130mph. An earlier Lightning was first seen at the 1999 motor show with a Mustang Cobra V8, but that has long gone. The new car's ‘nanotechnology’ batteries are said to have a 12-year lifespan and offer up to 15,000 recharges. LCC claims that these nano titanate power cells take just 10 minutes to charge from flat – if there’s some industrial three-phase power to hand (slightly longer if you’re using domestic mains). A full charge should enable a range of 125 miles, or 250 miles in the bigger-battery model. Transmission is via a 120kW Hi-Pa Drive motor in each wheel, with switchable two- or four-wheel drive on demand. Integrated electronics take care of traction control and the disc-free regenerative braking that turns the motors into generators on deceleration, recharging the cells. Max power is theoretically available at any speed, and a mind-boggling 2200lb ft of torque from standstill. The GT weighs just 1350kg thanks to a Kevlar body and a carbonfibre/aluminium honeycomb chassis. Despite all the electronic gubbins in the wheel assemblies, the unsprung mass is similar to a conventional car’s due to the lack of a brake assembly or driveshaft. The GT will avoid road tax, congestion charges and, of course, petrol prices, and the company estimates it will cost just 2.2p per mile. That should help soften the blow of the £150,000 list price… First deliveries are due in 2008. | ||||
