Dear (sugar-sprinkled, cinnamon, Christmassy) Cookies,

It's been a while since my last mail, so I'll gather together the past few month's happenings in brief for you in a moment, but before that I must tell you about something happening tomorrow in Dublin's fair city...

Tomorrow, Friday 21st December, from 2-5pm, in Marks & Spencer's, Grafton Street, Dublin 2
2FM will be broadcasting Rick O'Shea's radio show featuring performances from ...
Duke Special, Cathy Davey, PJ Gallagher, Neil Delamere, and of course David Geraghty (featuring Clare Finglass & myself). Dave, Clare & myself will be playing at around 4pm (approximately - as always!). Do join us on Grafton Street if you're around, or tune in online - www.rte.ie/2fm.

I'll leave everything else for the round-up. Thanks a million for all the support, emails, purchases, etc, over the past year. We're itching to get this new album on the road.

Nollaig shona agus Athbhliain Nua daoibh!
(Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all!)

Tadhg

...and so without further ado, here's the round up :

FREE TUNES

To make your festive season complete, there are two FREE tunes that you must get your mittens on :

1. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! - featuring three incredibly talented musicians : Cora Venus Lunny on violin, Dave Redmond on double-bass & Colm Quearney on electric guitar. This was recorded before a live audience. Listen carefully for the penny dropping. Literally. http://www.tadhgcooke.com/ccount/cli...

2. Thank God It's Christmas - This is a cover of a Queen tune that was performed on Monday by David Geraghty, Clare Finglass and myself in Spin FM. The Breakfast Xpress show has been podcasted on iTunes, so just do a wee search for it, and you'll hear the interview and the tune. Enjoy!

LIVE ON THE ORBITAL - NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

You can now listen to some new songs (taken from the Live on the Orbital recordings) on our myspace page. You can buy the whole album (in high quality mp3 format) from our online store now. We're still waiting for the Live on the Orbital film to be completed. Leaves on the line, sheep on the tracks, whatever. You decide. Anyway, in the meantime, the recordings from the show are now for sale in our online shop. Hurrah! The online shop can be found at www.tadhgcooke.com/shop

So as you can see, we've launched the new Ivy Court Records shop, which now sells CDs AND mp3s. Which reminds me that CDBaby, based in Portland, Oregon, also sells mp3s now in addition to the CD sales that have made its name. You can them here : www.cdbaby.com/all/tadhgcooke

DEMAND A SHOW!

For those of you who'd like us to play in your area, there's a nice program called Eventful that we've placed on our myspace page. You click on the "demand it!" button, and enter the city/town or hamlet where you'd like us to play. It's an interesting way to keep track of these things. Hopefully it will help us plan our US tour when the new album comes out.

STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK - TEMPLE STREET HOSPITAL

Dublin's FM104 have released a CD to help raise funds for Temple Street Children's Hospital (Dublin). The album is called : STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK - BEST OF UNCOVERED UNPLUGGED. It's an album of covers performed by artists including Duke Special, The Thrills, Director, Republic of Loose, Alabama 3, Natasha Bedingfield and a whole load of others. Dave Geraghty & myself performed a version of Steve Winwood's "Valerie" for the record. The album is available from : CDWorld.ie.

DAVID GERAGHTY STUFF

I've been touring and doing promotional work with David Geraghty's band of fine musicians up and down the country for the past few months. We racked up some serious mileage while visiting radio stations and tv stations across the land, and that was before we even set about a proper tour with the full band. Dave's album, "Kill Your Darlings", flew into the charts at number 21 and we've been stoking those coals ever since. I provide backing vocals with Clare Finglass in the group, and I throw in a wee bit of guitar too on certain tunes. It's strange taking more of a back seat (sorry!) in such a great line-up. I'm learning new tricks, which is always good. Every day's a school day, as they say. Dave is up for 2 Meteor awards by the way. You can find all the details over on his site : www.davidgeraghty.com

Cookies!

If you haven't already spotted it... there are some new tracks on Bebo for you to listen to/add... They're the live tracks we recorded in London earlier this year with a fabulous bunch of musicians (Colm Quearney, Cora Venus Lunny & David Redmond). Do listen in. We're still waiting for the film to arrive!

Also, David Geraghty's debut album Kill Your Darlings is out and to support this his band is embarking on a tour around Ireland. Visit Dave's sites to get the full details, but we're in Cork, Clonakilty, Galway, Dublin, Limerick and Portlaoise over the next week or two so stay on the look out. It's an amazing band (despite my involvement!) so catch them live if you can.

That's all for now really.
Take care!

Crawdaddy, Thurs 14th - Recording - SRL895 days ago

Dear Cookies,

I hope you're all keeping well...

This Thursday, 14th June, David Geraghty is launching his debut solo single "Fear The Hitcher" at Crawdaddy on Harcourt Street. I'll be lending some backing vocals and guitars to the show. It should be a great night so if you've any gumption (I love that word) you'll make your way down to that. (Dave may be known to you as the producer of my "Sparks EP", and as the multi-instrumentalist - guitars, banjos, keyboards, etc - with top Irish band BellX1).
The single will be available as a free download from his new website www.davidgeraghty.com on Friday 15th. So, download it and spread it far and wide!

On the album front... Dave, Colm, Paul, Shane & I have been in studio for the last two days trying out some tunes for the new album. The stuff feels great. We're playing live and really concentrating on getting good grooves going. Apart from (obviously!) the live album and the film from London, I haven't worked this way before. It's refreshing, and quite satisfying. There are lots of words being thrown about like "organic", "feel" and "tea-break". I like all of these words. We shall add more soon...
In other news, Dave Geraghty played a warm-up show in Dundalk's Spirit Store last Thursday, at which I supported. I gave some of the new songs their first public airing - which was a great feeling. It's like showing off your new baby... babies... I would imagine... Any thoughts?

Also, I'll be doing a wee support slot with The Chapters at An Cruiscín Lán, Cork on 21 Jun 2007 at 8pm. I'll be playing some of the new tunes again so it should be exciting (Will he remember the next verse? Oooo the tension!).

Speak soon! Tabhair aire.

... from the road... and onwards to Dublin & Belfast & BBC RADIO ULSTER!943 days ago

Dear All,

Quickly, I want to mention two gigs we're playing :

Starbucks, Harcourt Street (beside the Luas), Dublin 2 on Friday afternoon. The gig opens at 4pm and finishes up at 6pm. Do come along. I'll be joined by Dave Redmond on double bass for the afternoon. Tis free... with donations to charity welcome.

St Patrick's Hall, Holywood, Co Down on Saturday night. The show opens at 7:30. Myself and Colm Quearney (on guitars) shall be performing late that night. Twill be only massive, so do come along if you're about. Tis only a measly fiver in, and it's for charity.

If you're up North, you can tune in to the Saturday Magazine Show on BBC Ulster from 10am until 11am. John Toal presents the show and I'm told we'll be having some chat, songs and their chef will be making grub... How cool is that? Who said cookery can't be done on the radio?

For all you non-NornIron folk, you can listen in online....
Visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/.
Click "launch BBC radio player" button on the top right hand corner of the page.
Then choose a radio station from the list. You're looking for Radio Ulster.
Hey presto... that should be it.

Okay, I have some small bloggy (there's a new word!) pieces below written on tour over the past few days. Watch out for the caustic jibes and the fairly consistent tone of bitterness. I just want to give a quick shout out to Brian, Karl, Trish+Ursula and Maria in Cork, and also Grel, Neil and Orlaith in Portlaoise for having the laugh with us and cheering us up a bit. I'm allowed wallow. Don't worry about me.

Thanks. Hope to see you on our travels!
T

Day 2 ... where were the tribes?

I'm sitting in an old woman's café (filled with old ladies, that is, I don't know if an old lady actually owns it) on a street near the Cathedral in Galway city (that's out in West of Ireland, or The Wessschhht as we say here). My fat fingers are letting the crumbs from my jammy fruit scone drop between the leaves of my book of Kerouac's letters. I feel increasingly like a character in Withnail & I. I've gone on tour by mistake!

Last night's gig was not the best tour I've ever been invited onto. I'm seething. I want to throttle the organisers of this shambles. I played well, played some new songs, but can it ever be a good gig when you almost singlehandedly outnumber the audience? So much for encouraging people to vote. Having said that, we're in Galway, the coastal city without water, so they can be forgiven for being more than mildly disillusioned. Rock the Vote? Hmmm.

I can only hope that the remainder of the tour is better organised and not scheduled in the week before university exams.* I've resolved to use the time for rehearsal and writing. This is a good thing. I've already written a tune that's been lingering in an unfinished state for quite a while. It's a fantastic feeling. That final push after a long and complicated birth. (Not that I could imagine the miracle of birth. I'll leave that to those more anatomically suited to the experience. Besides which, I've man's work to be doing. Where's that pot of tea? Who has the remote control? ... and for those of you who haven't grasped my sense of humour yet, I am not trying to alienate half the world's population. I am in fact, joking.) It's like you've had a puzzle on your table for so long, but you can't find the piece to complete it... and then one day you find a gorgeous piece of wood, with spectacular grain, and a lovely feel, and someone hands you a delicate jigsaw (for that's what they call those tools!) to shape this final piece. Delicate engineering. Who knew I was good with wood? Okay I'm signing off. Out into the sun with me, to read and write and moan.

* It was not any better. The highlights were a post-gig session with some nice bar folk in Portlaoise, a night out in Cork after the gig, and of course, the showers in the B&Bs.

Day 4 .... on the way to Portlaoise...

We've been debating this point on the road. What's better? Tough crowd or NO crowd? I suppose it depends on how tough the crowd are really, doesn't it? I mean, if we're talking about a Millwall Supporters Club night at the Queen Mary Pub, then I think I'll take a raincheck.

Also, I've been wondering... I'm a reasonably informed member of society. I read the papers (yes, the real ones). I read my history books. I realised how messed up our world is. I read my Fisk, my Monbiot, my Chomsky. I know the value of democracy and what it would mean to millions of people worldwide if they, like us, were given the opportunity to exercise it. Having said that, democracy also brought us Bush, Nixon, Hitler, etc,... so it's certainly not foolproof! But sure a glance around Leinster House would tell you that. I promised myself that I wasn't going to get into politics. This is a music site. I am a musician. It's not my place. But I can moan can't I? Sometimes I wish voting wasn't about choosing who you disliked the least.

METRO preview - "looks and sounds like nobody but himself"975 days ago

Thanks to Paul for sending me on this editorial which appeared in the Metro newspaper in Dublin on Thursday morning prior to our Bewley's concert. Thanks also to everyone for coming along and making it a wonderfully enjoyable night. Colm played out of his skin, so hats off to him (no pun intended). Twas only fantastic.

The article goes a lot like this...
-GIG-
TADHG COOKE

Standing apart from the singer-songwriter mainstream can be quite a chore nowadays. Tadhg Cooke, a Meath-born strummer with a line in Jeff Buckley-tinged folk rock, makes a greater effort than most. For one thing, he is seldom without his trademark fedora hat. Donning 1920s-style headgear may not seem a hugely rebellious gesture, yet you wouldn't catch Damien Rice or Glen Hansard at it. Which is probably the point. There's lots of theatricality in Cooke's music too. Charting a course between noir-ish torch-songs and heart-on-sleeve folk-pop, 2005 debut album Wax & Seal pointed to the arrival of a fully realised talent. Since then, Cooke has bravely followed his own route, favouring smaller theatre venues over sweaty rock clubs and touring extensively abroad. Whether this independent streak will be enough to win a substantial fanbase remains to be seen. Certainly, there are some promising harbingers : the 2006 single Know You Hate Me was a minor radio hit; support slots with Damien Dempsey and Bell X1 have further raised his profile. And at last year's Electric Picnic he shared a stage with the latter's guitarist, Dave Geraghty, and violinist Cora Venus Lunny. For now Cooke remains largely an anomaly : an Irish singer who looks and sounds like nobody but himself.
