Reading, writing and the road...hace 63 días

Hi all,
Apologies for the lack of bloggery action of late, I've been knee deep in several different preoccupations, including moving house, my various duties as an expectant father, reading some superb literature, booking an extensive tour for 2010 and writing the followup to 'Nine Cents From Benelux'.

Moving house was an epic activity, as it always with. I've settled, for now, with my fiancée in Bridport, a small town on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, which is not only a beautiful place to be, but is also something of an artists' colony, with plenty of songwriters, visual artists, poets, authors and performance artists plying their trade in the locality.

It's proved to be a really invigorating creative experience to leave behind the stultifying air and automobile noise of Bournemouth behind, and head for somewhere quieter, brighter and cleaner.

I've finally been able to sit down and fully take into consideration what has happened in my life in the last two years. Both personally and artistically I've experienced a huge evolutionary process, gaining wisdom and a few scars along the way. It's inevitable that when you're travelling at such speed, you clip a wall or two along the way. Still, life is good and I think a lot of the narrow gaps I travelled through at such velocity are evident in the writing for my next record.

I'm writing all the time at the moment, more so than I have been since the writing cycle for 'I'm Alive' in '05/'06. The new material is a lot more personal and less storytelling than the 'Nine Cents...' songs, and I think it's shaping up to be the most challenging record I've made yet.

I'm not interested in concessions or compromise this time, I'm keen to make a great record which is either loved or hated. I have no problem with dividing opinion, I think it's healthy to do so sometimes.

Don't get too excited, though...the new album won't be along until Summer 2010. Maybe even later if it's not 100% perfect by that point. I'll keep you posted.

I've been reading some brilliant books recently. In particular I've been reading one of very few Kerouac novels I haven't enjoyed before-'Doctor Sax'. Fantastic stuff, as you would expect. Also, I have found deep joy within Haruki Murakami's 'Hard Boiled Wonderland and The End Of The World'. I've been a big fan of Murakami's deep, clear, still and deeply Kafka-esque writing for a long time, in fact since reading his seminal 'Norwegian Wood' years ago, but hadn't discovered 'Hard Boiled...' until my friend, and superb singer/songwriter, Matt Marr lent me the book a while ago.

Thanks, Matt...I really appreciate it. I know I've had the book for a while, and will get it back to you asap!

I am also pleased to announce that I'm going to be playing an extensive UK tour in 2010, starting in mid March, which will initially be a triple-header tour with two friends of mine-and great artists-Alex Hall and Terry Emm.

We'll be visiting a lot of new venues and also playing in a lot of the places which I played with The Mercurymen, and also visited with Marcus Bonfanti and Lotte Mullan this year.

I can't wait to get back on the road, see everyone again, make new friends and play you all my new songs (and plenty of "ol' faithful" numbers from my back catalogue!).

I will blog again soon, but in the meantime take care of yourselves and keep supporting live music!

First run of UK tour dates are done...so much fun!!hace 268 días

Well it's been a great run of shows with The Mercurymen.

First up was The Queen's Hall in Narberth, Pembrokeshire. Our first sold-out headline show, and in a big venue too!
We loved the show, and would like to extend our thanks to everyone who came along, lent their very vocal support and
made us feel like rockstars!

Next was The Rydal in New Milton, Hampshire, which is as close as we've come in 2009 to a hometown gig, and our long-awaited return to The Sage in Gateshead...Another two fantastic nights, which reminded us all why we love doing what we do so much.

So, what's next in line for The Mercurymen?

We're playing The Borderline in London on 18th April with Never The Bride, and we're currently having our album, Postcards From Valonia, remixed ready for a full release in the summer of 2009, along with
which we'll be touring extensively. We've had our appetite for the road piqued by the last fortnight, so nothing will stop us
when we get out for our next major tour.

What's next for me?

I am touring, touring, touring! I am on the road in April and May (full dates are available on this site), and this summer I will be releasing a new compilation album, 'The Best Of Jinder 2002-2009'. I will also be commencing work on an all-new solo album, which will, all being well, be ready for release late this year/early 2010.

See you soon!

UK TOUR and NEW RELEASE coming up...hace 297 días

Full details will follow, but I wanted to let you know that I am going to be playing a solo tour in April and May.

It will be in the UK and Scotland, and is set to be a co-headline with my good friend Marcus Bonfanti, an amazing blues/roots singer songwriter from London.

Support comes from the superlative Lotte Mullan, whom many of you saw in support of The Mercurymen in 2008.

Also, excitingly, I have a new album on the way! It has just been mastered, and is a 'Best Of' compilation, which, alongside two brand new tracks, features a collection of the highlights from the five albums I made prior to The Mercurymen, along with several hard-to-find tracks including the 2002 Candlefire single, a track from the Olas & Jinder album and many other nuggets of Jinderness.

All further information will be announced soon-tour dates, tracklisting, album title, release dates and more.

Stay tuned!

We have lost one of the true giants of British music.hace 327 días

Hi all,
Today is a time of profound sadness for myself and, I am sure, for many of you too. Late yesterday afternoon I was passed the news that one of my favourite artists and one of the biggest and longest-standing influences on my music, the great John Martyn, succumbed to double pneumonia in an Irish hospital yesterday morning.

John was just sixty years old.

Along with creating what is my favourite album of all time, 'One World', he also revolutionised the way that the acoustic guitar was, and would come to be approached, with his distinctive percussive slap-fingerstyle playing and his gratuitous and inspirational use of the Echoplex delay system, taking the humble acoustic guitar into new realms of creative invention.

Everyone who considers themself to be a modern acoustic guitarist owes a debt of gratitude to John, and his influence is both subliminal and writ large on 21st Century music.

Of course, he will always be most fondly remembered for his literate, beautiful and intimate songwriting, first coming to full fruition on 'Bless The Weather' and permeating albums such legendary albums as 'Solid Air' and 'Sunday's Child', and many more.

John Martyn was such a big part of my musical life that I could almost turn this blog post into a book...maybe I might someday. But for now I just wanted to pay my respects to him and say goodbye and thankyou.

I suggest everyone might put on 'One World', 'Solid Air' or 'Live at Leeds' at a volume that could only be described as bastard-loud, and raise a glass in the big man's honour at some point over the weekend. He wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

The Mercurymen at Midem...how civilised.hace 336 días

Hello residents of Blogland,
Well I got back from Cannes this morning at 3am, after flying out to play with The Mercurymen at the Midem Festival...what a lovely time we had.

We played the British Acoustic Stage to a packed house and somehow, despite severe sleep deprivation, managed to play out of our skins, and whipped out one of the best performances we have mustered to date.

We also had the pleasure of hanging out with many interesting and personable people including Michael Eavis (of Glastonbury fame), Justin Hawkins and his new outfit Hot Leg, songwriting legend Donovan, Honey Ryder, The Travelling Band, the irrepressible Tony Moore and many other lovely people.

After retiring at 4am, once fully quenched by the delights of the Cannes nightlife, we caught a couple of hours' shut-eye before heading back to Nice airport to fly home, and now here I am, heavy of eyelid, writing to you.

Do excuse me, I have to sleep now.

See you on the road soon,
Jx
