BOFOT ethos (slightly stolen from the SAS):
1. The unrelenting pursuit of clinical excellence: Every individual has a responsibility to advance the occupational therapy profession and its image; we cannot afford to leave this to some obscure researchers in some obscure laboratories that we hope exist.
2. The highest standards of discipline: without which we will never achieve point 1 or be taken seriously.
3. No sense of class: Every member’s views (regardless of job-title or years of experience) should be given serious consideration for the advancement of the profession. A profession ruled by dinosaurs alone is a profession in danger of extinction.
4. Humility and humour: Let us try not to get our heads stuck up our own bums or we might get a reputation like certain other professions have: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...
Join us, and together we can bring balance to the fluff!

I have another question? We are doin a student-led seminar where we talk 2 class for 2 hrs! but involves practical work. I am doing Educational Skills-whatever they are-i am assuming it is wot we do in re-educating an individual with new techniques and methods using their existing skills?-but still not sure coz there is nothin in textbooks that specifically says 'Educational Skills'. u wouldnt have an idea would u???xxx -
Bofot Founder89 weeks agoWhy would therapeutic media/activities benefit an individual? Have a look at section 2 (The meaning of life lies within occupation) of this page: http://www.metaot.com/blogs/%5Buser%5D-6 and it might give you some ideas. The bottom line is, any activity that gives a person enjoyment or a sense of worth is therapeutic, so you can pick any activity that is valid for the people in your group.

Leeanne90 weeks agoHey fellow OT's/OT students! I am currently in my 2nd semester of 1st year and we have been asked to carry out a theraputic group for our fellow students, however i am struggling in the concept of why theraputic media/activities would benefit an individual?. I understand this is difficult to explain if i do not have a chosen activity(of yet)!. So if anyone out there has any ideas please fill me in! Thank-you!xxxx

G101 weeks agomy gawd i cant stand essays
ohhhh aye and helloooo fellow OT family
was just wondering if anyone could lend some knowledge on my essay. i have to compare and contrast two approaches that apply to a specific client group, im going to do developmental delay&learning difficulties and my approaches sensory motor/integration and the other approach im thinkn is cognitive(top down approach), the intervention is dressing practice. i dont have a clue if this is correct, as on placement there were no clearly labelled approaches defined(i appreciate that this isnt an idealist world and i need to some thinkn for myself lol) but i am getting very confused!
cheeers now, hope all are smiley happy people atm -

Faithful Garuda120 weeks agoNik, a suggestion for your best practice coursework: Just look for a condition that already has best practice guidelines on this list http://www.nice.org.uk/page.aspx?o=g... and base your protocol on the published guidelines :0)

Sophie Brown130 weeks agoHi Clare,
I'm and OT working in older peoples mental health. I read your comment and really didnt know how to answer it. When I was on a placement as a student (in an elderly MH setting), they kept talking about how my area of expertise as an OT was mobility. As a mental health OT, I have more of a focus on MH(obviously), and am still a bit clueless on the mobility side. In practical terms, I dont think there are 'core skills' generically as there are SO man different areas of OT u could work in, although I guess you would need core skills in ur specialist area e.g. being able to engage the elderly disorientated for me. I guess O.T's need the skills to make them a 'good' OT, e.g. enablement, encouragement that WEG psychology thing we did at uni. Although I havent really anwered ur qustion at all, I hope it may help in getting some responses or ideas?I think the best core skill is to really care about what your doing, coz if u work with tru passion it really makes a difference -

Hey just wondering if I could get some debate going about ot's core skills.......What are they? Are they inate human properties or professional ones learnt in college? This is very basic stuff and would expect to find lots in the literature but it's mostly the words "core skills" thats thrown around without a deffinitive list. Half wondering if this vagueness in our core skills has earned us the titles "Basket Weavers" and "Fluffy Bunnies". If it's not just me struggling to define our core skills as a profession maybe those titles are justified!!!!!!! Just be interested in finding out student and practising Ot's views!!!
