Afghanistan: what to do? -
Dear friends,
As the death toll in Afghanistan mounts, the UN-backed international coalition has lost its way and is failing on all fronts.
US Generals are pushing a reluctant Obama to double down disastrously on a purely military solution based on yet more troops. We’re at a decisive moment -- with one last chance to change course.
Many experts agree that ultimately there can be no military solution in Afghanistan - the only path forward is to negotiate peace, empower a responsible government, and eventually withdraw foreign troops.
This is the NEW plan (Negotiate-Empower-Withdraw) for Afghanistan -- we urgently need hundreds of thousands of citizens around the globe to sign on before it's delivered to US-President Obama and other NATO leaders next week, click below and forward this email:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/afghanistan_...
The world shouldn't abandon Afghanistan to a surging Taliban, but neither should we throw more troops at a doomed and damaging attempt to 'win' the war. The NEW plan is to:
Negotiate - support Afghan efforts to open peace and reconciliation talks with moderate insurgents, as well as regional deals with Pakistan and Iran to stop them wrecking progress
Empower - support the Afghan people to root out corruption and rebuild their government and institutions
Withdraw - set a timeline for the responsible withdrawal of foreign troops in the context of a negotiated settlement and a viable Afghan state.
The situation in Afghanistan is complex, but we cannot stay silent, trusting that our leaders will make the right decisions. As on so many other issues, from climate change to human rights, leaders fail to do the right thing unless people press them to. For 7 years the world has watched as our leaders failed in Afghanistan -- it's time to end our silence.
With hope,

The hunger crisis is building -
Dear Friends,
With the recent financial crisis, poverty is skyrocketing in poorer countries, with 1 in 6 people on the planet now facing life-threatening hunger.
Next week, leaders will meet at the World Food Summit in Rome to address this growing crisis. The best solution is funding to boost sustainable agriculture in poorer countries, but France, Germany, UK, Italy and Japan are backing out on a $20 billion promise made earlier this year.
Millions of lives are on the line. Sign the petition below for rich countries to keep their promises, and it will be delivered directly to world leaders through a spectacular stunt at the Roman Colosseum on the eve of the Summit:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/world_hunger...
The world produces enough food to feed everyone. Yet the number of people suffering from chronic hunger across the planet has reached the record-high figure of 1 billion this year.
Hundreds of billions are spent by wealthy governments to bail out banks and financial institutions, but the G8 countries are trying to cut a promised $20 billion commitment to agricultural investment to only $3 billion in new money. With literally millions of lives on the line, this is a scandal.
The Rome summit is also our best opportunity to push governments to promote small holder agricultural production -- growing evidence shows that intensive farming models are not effectively countering hunger and have a highly damaging impact on our environment.
We are teaming up with anti-poverty organisation ActionAid and global farmers networks to show our governments that we refuse to accept a world where people die every minute from hunger. Sign the petition to the Rome Summit -- every signature will be represented at a stunning delivery event at Rome's Colloseum:

A win on Guinea! -
Dear Friends,
Our community pulled out all the stops to get the EU to act after the massacre of over 150 democracy protesters -- delivering our 125,000 strong petition to the Presidency of the European Union, and publishing opinion pieces citing the public demand in the International Herald Tribune, the New York Times online and other papers.
The day after our petition delivery and opinion pieces ran, the EU agreed to an arms embargo and sanctions! Last week the African Union(AU) followed with travel bans and asset freezing.
This is a victory for our global democracy movement, particularly for those brave African voices who are standing up to brutality and violence. Our small actions together gave European and African leaders a public mandate to do the right thing. EU and AU sanctions are now putting powerful pressure on the military leadership to step aside and allow a democratic process in Guinea.
with thanks,
Alice, Benjamin, Ricken, Graziela, Luis, Pascal and the whole Avaaz team

PPS Great news -- Avaaz has been named one of the 'Top 10 Ultimate Game-Changers' in politics by the Huffington Post, one of the world's highest-traffic news sites! Avaaz's founder and executive director is named in the prize, but Avaaz's power comes from its members around the world--so this is really a recognition of all of us. well that was the best fake statistic I've ever heard of!
and the worst.
I think helplessness is quite possibly the biggest handicap anyone could give themselves. if you don't like the way things are run, why roll over and take it anyway? I'd rather be active and have a role in change, rather than just let things happen to me. I don't like the way this world works. I'm going to change it, along with the milions of other people on this planet who feel the same. and If it doesn't happen, at least we'll know we tried my best. But I think it will happen. it happens every day. what will you be able to say, whatever the outcome? my contribution was whimpering? staunch fence-sitting? wouldn't it be great if you could say you changed a life, even if it was you're own? that in itself is quite an achievement.

theres nothing you can do for the world.
its all politics. greed, ambition and desire are the only things that influence the world. 2,000 people won't affect anything in the world, as you grow bigger it won't do much anyway.
I know that you want to do everything you can to change it, but the possibility is so minimal that its not even half a percent.
Good luck.

Make tea not war - The Peace Group46 weeks agoi recieved an email a moment ago asking me to sign a petition, calling for the support of the ceasefire in Gaza. i signed it, and passed the email onto my contacts. also, the link is being advertised on the MTNW page.
it is such a great petition, for such a great cause. this conflict has been going on far too long. if we truely believe the fighting needs to stop, we need to drop in and change it.
peace and love,
