New Album Recording Session 1
|
Well we have just wraped up our first session of recording for the 2nd Album and things have went really well. As with recording "The Blood" we are working with Neal Calderwood at his very nice Manor Park studio. Its great having such a facility & Neal only a half an hour from where we are based.
In preparing for this album we had discussed a number of things to achieve and ways to work. We decided that we would use material only written recently - all new beats, riffs, chords, bass lines & lyrics. This is a departure from "The Blood" as some of those songs where up on 10 years old by the time the Album had came out. There still is some fairly good ideas floating around in that dark closet but in order to establish a sense of cohesion for this record we felt that it was best to park those for the moment. This album will reflect ALB version 2008.
In the weeks/months previous to going to the studio we have been rehersing 2/3 times a week together assembling song ideas. There are at least 3 versions of each of the 5 tracks that are now committed to tape (Hard Disc). We generally don't stop working things untill the 3 of us are 100% happy - This process takes a lot of time/energy/debate/arguments/huffs
/confusion. We finished rehersing on Sunday 27/7/08 put fresh heads on Darren's DW Kit, new strings on all guitars & Bass and we where at the starting line.
Darren & I pulled into Manor Park at around 9:30am on Monday 28th, Jonny was rescuing his Ibanez from the repair shop where it was getting some rennovation to the frets and electrics. Life on the road can take its toll on a guitar and this wee Ibanez has seen some amount of road. We set up Darren's kit, the setup he is currently using consists of a DW 24'' kick, 13'', 16'', 18'' toms, DW Snare, a brass Tenor Snare, Ride, China, Crash/Ride, 17'', 18'', 19'' crash cymbals, wood block & a tambourine. Jonny used his Ibanez, Gibson Explorer & Gibson Firebird with Neals Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier. I used my Ibanez SR506 for tracking the Drums and then my No 1 Warwick for the bass tracks. The Bass was recorded DI and also using a Gallien Krueger rig. The starting points of the individual instrument tones where brillant all credit to Neal, it was very inspiring.
On day one we tracked the Drums with Darren knocking each performance out of the park. It wasn't easy as it was the hottest day so far in 2008 and here he was in a sealed sound proof room nailing drum tracks. They sounded so good though I think its what carried him through the heat. We tracked the Bass on Tuesday and I was lucky enough that there where only a few "Jazz" bits that required changing. I even recorded my first pick style only recording. Its fast and heavy!! Neal worked really hard at keeping me at the game and I'd like to thank for his efforts in coaching me along (I might even do a root note tune for the craic sometime!!) Jonny got started the Guitars on Tuesday and continued between rythmn tracks and vocals for the rest of the week. He used a mix of guitars on tracks and has sang his ass off on these tracks. From the unmixed playback between takes the sound of the songs is already imo brillant.
We are going back to the studio at the end of October to complete these songs and record the rest of the album. I can say this for sure that if you liked "The Blood" you will love these tunes. Some pics will follow.
Cheers
