Gordon Merchant founded Billabong in Burleigh Heads on the gold coast in 1973. Combining his surfing with his hard work, Gordon designed boardshorts, manufacturing them on the kitchen table selling through local surf shops and markets..
Gordon developed his own stitching technique, wich made the garments more durable, cost effictive and less labor intensive. He employed machinists, moved the opperation into a factory, set up a distribution network and sponsored a team of reowned surfers. The buisness thrived..
since then Billabong has continually improved every phase of its opperation to become one of the worlds leading manufacturers of surfware and accessories..
